Remixin': Mixing Business with Leisure Resolution v2.7 1003 26/9/03 9:49 AM Page 56 business Remixin’: mixing business with leisure The remix has become an essential tool for label marketing departments, turning top remixers into stars in their own right as they lend cutting-edge cred to artists. But even remixers-of-the-moment face familiar problems: getting a break, maintaining a career after the incendiary phase, and getting paid. NIGEL JOPSON Van Helden ACK IN THE DAYS, a ‘re-mix’ meant the in, and that was it.

  • A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night with Her Headphones On: June’S New Singles Part 2
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night With Her Headphones On: June’s New Singles Part 2. Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world Just in time for the sanitised hedonism of Ibiza, May and June have brought a slew of turgid house ‚bangers‘ that are so tired and uninspiring they make the decision to insert red hot pokers into both your ears seem like an extremely good idea. Yet, trust me when I tell you that there is some wonderful music out there. To prove the point this follow-up to last weeks article highlights some more amazing singles and EPs, from the likes of Robag Wruhme, Gardens Of God. Felix Da‘ Housecat, Len Faki, Paul Woolford, Mark E, Seth Schwarz, and Kamera.By JOHN BITTLES So, just remember boys and girls that just because it is warm and sunny outside, the beer costs over ten pounds a pint, and everyone’s IQ has just decreased by about twenty points, there is never an excuse for listening to crap tunes. After a three year break Robag Wruhme arrives on DJ Koze’s always on point Pampa Records with the lush electronic atmospherics of the Cybekks EP. Recalling the emotional house of his Thora Vukk LP from 2011, the title-track is a mid-paced chugger with a deep, metallic bass and a beautifully stirring synth, which seems to come and go as it pleases. This is a truly wonderful track which perfectly illustrates just how life-affirming dance music can be. On the flip meanwhile Volta Cobby builds slowly from humble beginnings to become an epic trancer which will break more than its fair share of hearts.

  • Steve Mac (Producer/Remixer/DJ) Biog
Steve Mac (Producer/Remixer/DJ) Biog Steve Mac, AKA (formerly) one half of the Rhythm Masters began his career as a scratch hip-hop DJ at the age of 11 – where he spent as many hours a day he could practicing, and ultimately left school early because of his obsession with perfecting the vinyl ‘scratching’ skill and also the studio. He was first inspired by the likes of Marly Marl, Dr Dre, Grandmaster Flash and Jazzy Jeff and many other Hip-Hop DJs and initially started ‘messing around’ making Hip-Hop records. Steve’s Foray into house music first began with Rob Chetcuti in 1990, in Malta. Both in a local Hip-hop group, they spotted what they describe as each other’s ‘formulating talent’, and formed the production/DJ duo: The Rhythm Masters – Steve, bringing his acquired skills from his Hip-Hop past into house music. After three years of studio work, Steve, (along with Rob) moved back to England and spent much of the first half of the 90’s absorbing the house scene - particularly the garage sounds of the US, where his long-term fascination with Todd Terry and the US sound began. The sounds from this time can be heard subliminally through every Rhythm Masters track – especially from their album Disconnect Your Head with tracks like The Ghetto and Underground (feat. The vocals of Diane Charlemagne) on Black and Blue. And, amongst others, 22 releases on their own label – Disfunktional Recordings. Steve and Rob formed Disfunktional in 1996 and have since, seen releases from Junior Sanchez, Yousef, Richard Grey, Paul Woolford, Lottie, Mutiny, Kashmir, DJ Triple A and the mighty Danny Tenaglia and gorgieo moroders (from here to eternity) It wasn’t until 1996 and their remixes of Todd Terry’s Jumping’ and Plastic Dreams that it really took off for the Rhythm Masters.

  • The DIY Careers of Techno and Drum 'N' Bass Djs in Vienna
Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound.
