A WHIRL OF LAUGHTER AND ENJOYMENT

This has been one of those terms that has flown by in a whirl of laughter and enjoyment. The energy in rehearsals has been great, with all the laughs masking the serious amount of work being done. Some of the songs (This Is Me, Viva La Musica, Another Day of Sun) have been among the most challenging we have done, with more independent choral writing than we are used to, much of it in eight parts, but we think it has been worth it, with the excitement that comes out of that.

Of course, what matters in the end is that we give you a good show, so we hope you can sit back and enjoy our latest offering.

This Is Us.

Gary Griffiths, Inspiration Music Director and Founder

About Gary… I have been singing for as long as I can remember. Wolverhampton Grammar School was my major musical influence – School Choir, Choral Society, Musical Theatre Group, Jazz Band – alongside the Youth Orchestra and the Concert Band.

When it came to University it had to be music, and so to York. Three wonderful years of music making also included being Chorus Master for York Light Opera and MD for Pickering Musical Society.

I then became a tenor in the Choir of York Minster with all that entails; daily services as well as many world tours, concerts and recordings. After 18 years, I left and became part of the creative team behind the formation of SingLive.

Now, with Inspiration as my sole focus, I really do have my dream job. Weekly rehearsals and trips around the country and abroad are a joy. INSPIRATION’S SINGERS

Ask any of our singers and they’ll all offer different explanations as to why they love to sing. Of course “…music making group singing has always been available but its popularity has can play a role in really expanded in recent years. sustaining a healthy immune system…’ So what makes people want to leave the comfort of their sofas each week and partake in an exercise that takes many out of their comfort zone? Is it new friendships, making music, routine, learning, bonding, socialisation? It’s all of those things and more, and the benefits gained from this form of activity can have a positive effect on many areas of our lives.

There have been numerous studies conducted about the effects of singing. You only have to do an internet search to see the proliferation of research in this area. We came across a very recent study conducted by Oxford University which looked at health and well-being related to singing. Some of the findings may be of no surprise to many of you but other findings may reveal benefits that you haven’t considered.

Singing is particularly beneficial for improving breathing, posture and muscle tension, so we should all be able to walk tall and have perfectly toned bodies. Well everything is relative! The good news though is that music making also exercises the brain as well as the body. In terms of physical health benefits, participating in music has been shown to be effective in pain relief, probably due to the release of endorphins – a natural “…be healthier, painkiller responsible for the ‘high’ experienced after fitter, stress free intense exercise. There’s also some evidence to suggest that music making can play a role in sustaining a healthy and make new immune system by reducing the stress hormone cortisol and boosting antibodies in our systems. friendships

Aside from the physical benefits there is evidence that to boot!” singing helps our mental health too. Learning new songs is sometimes challenging but that is a good sign, as this type of learning is cognitively stimulating, which helps with memory and has also been shown to help WHY SING? those with dementia too. The satisfaction of performing together (with or without an audience) and the reliance on each other to come together and make the whole picture is associated with activating the reward system in the brain, which keeps people coming back for more. Many of our singers on stage today have been singing together for over 10 years, which brings me to the next point that community singing is effective for bonding large groups and improving our social networks.

Finally, singing has also been shown to improve our sense of happiness and wellbeing. Research has found, for example, that people feel more positive after actively singing than they do after other forms of relaxation and interaction such as passively listening to music or after chatting about positive life events.

So there we have it, come and give Inspiration a go. You could be healthier, fitter, stress free and make new friendships to boot!

Our philosophy is anyone can sing – there’s no such thing as can’t. You won’t know unless you give it a try. No experience is necessary and no auditions are needed. All of our rehearsals are held in a completely non-threatening, friendly environment with expert tuition.

Next time it could be you up there singing with like minded people, accompanied by a world class orchestra. To find out more visit www.inspirationuk.com.
