Gilford was struck by tragedy twice last week, and the grieving town is searching for solace in the wake of the deaths of two of its own. Former Fire Chief Michael Mooney passed away early last week, and his memory was honored at a service Friday with friends, family and firefighters from all over remembering his sense of community and dedication to his career. At 63, Mooney's death was untimely; he had just retired as Gilford's chief three years ago. The close-knit fire department spoke with great fondness of the former chief, willing to talk to reporters to ensure that Mooney is properly memorialized. A car accident in Gilford turned tragic for two lo- cal teens just days later.Alexander Rowson, a Gilford resident, and Benjamin Emmond of Laconia were both well known to Gilford High School students, who have been in a state of quiet shock since the car accident occurred. Leaning on each other for sup- port, friends and family remembered both boys at a tearful memorial service on Monday.
