Cayne tops Rapee

Theon playing last rooms for theboard Cayne-Rapee match were packed four-deep as the teams wrestled for a berth in today’s final. A lot of folks were rooting for 83-year-old George Rapee to make a grand appear- ance in the final -- but it was not to be. The match was decided on the very last board. Rapee and Co. were leading by a single IMP. David Berkowitz was playing three spades in one room, and he suffered a one-trick defeat. Russ Arnold and Billy Eisenberg got one trick higher, were doubled, and suffered a one-trick loss. Because of the double, Judi Radin, left, and Valerie Westheimer Mike Moss, left, and Bjorn Fallenius CAYNE gained 3 IMPs to win the match by 2, 123- 121. Vancouver invitesBy Doug Cowan, players Chairman, Vancouver “Under 1999 the Sails” The next North American Bridge Championship in the West will be held one year from now in Vancouver BC. It will be right downtown, on the waterfront, at the Vancouver Trace & Convention Centre -- the building “Under the Sails.” The Centre was originally the Canada Pavillion at Expo 1986 and is now the main terminal for cruises to Alaska during the summer. The two main host hotels will be the adjacent Pan Pacific Hotel and the Waterfront Centre Hotel across the street (the latter will be used for some bridge events). Rates, especially when converted to U.S. dollars, will be very attractive for this class of hotel. Alternative accommodations will also be avail- able.
