A bigger factor was what became South Shore’s prime customer: the sprawling Bethlehem Steel rolling mill at Burns Har- bor, east of Gary, which opened for busi- ness in 1965 (and today is part of Luxem- bourg-based steel giant Arcelor Mittal).
