A Brief Circus History Man’s fascination with the circus actually dates back at least 5,000 years, as evidenced by depictions of artists such as jugglers and acro- bats painted in rock tombs. In the ancient Roman empire, acrobatic performances entertained spectators in large arenas and amphithe- aters during breaks between chariot and horse races as well as gladi- ator fights. In medieval times, juggling troops amused courtiers and the general population at taverns, marketplaces, and fairs. Other acts, such as tightrope walkers, fire-eaters, acrobats, and trained animals, were added as forms of entertainment in the beginning of modern times. The fascination with circus acts led to the construction of circus buildings in Europe in the early 19th century, and by the end of that century, travelling circuses in the United States necessitated the cre- ation of the transportable circus tent—the “Chapiteau.” Circuses es- sentially disappeared during World War I, but quickly regained popular- ity after the war as the population craved carefree entertainment. During the economic crisis of the 1920s many circuses went bankrupt, and the remaining ones were destroyed during World War II. Their post- war comeback after 1945 was tenuous due to the competition with tele- vision, cinemas, and amusement parks, leading to the “big circus death” in the 1960s—the art of circus was lost. A French movement in the late 1970s can be thanked for the revival of the circus, which led to its inevitable modernization, referred to today as “Nouveau Cirque.” It is a new form of circus that favors theatrical and even dance-like productions. An artistically versatile, sophisticat- 4 Basel Life Magazine / www.basellife.com Don’t miss this year’s 10th anniversary, which will also include two free open-air circus events for the public on May 12 and 13. At 15 meters above ground, he will cross the 190 meters from the Grossbasel side to the Kleinbasel side of the Rhein, showing his tricks without a safety net. • Reichenbach and Beyond - the Final Problem Revisited
1 A new conference organised by The Reichenbach Irregulars of Switzerland in September 2017 Reichenbach and Beyond - The Final Problem revisited Das Hotel Panorama, Hasliberg-Reuti / Meiringen, Switzerland Thursday, 31st August 2017 to Sunday, 3rd September 2017 Following the successful conference Alpine Adventures – Arthur Conan Doyle and Switzerland, held at the Schatzalp, Davos, in September 20141, The Reichenbach Irregulars of Switzerland venture to take a fresh look at one of the most iconic Holmes adventures: The Final Problem. And where else could this take place than in the heart of the Berner Oberland, where the epic struggle between Holmes and Moriarty took place more than 125 years ago. The new conference Reichenbach and Beyond – The Final Problem revisited will take place in Hasliberg- Reuti / Meiringen from Thursday, 31st August to Sunday, 3rd September 2017. It will feature excursions into the dramatic landscape of the Berner Oberland, sights rarely explored by Sherlockians when they visit Meiringen and the Reichenbach Falls. What’s more, the conference will present insightful lectures to examine new evidence and re-visit long-accepted theories around the incident on that fateful 4th May 1891. The Final Problem revisited The starting point of this gathering is that for Sherlock Holmes the Reichenbach Falls is not a synonym for the end of his career, as he first predicted when he encountered the “somewhat sinister figure of the late Professor Moriarty standing upon the narrow pathway which led to safety.” Holmes reached safety and it was the Professor who fell that long way down into the abyss. The Great Hiatus marked a watershed in the career of Sherlock Holmes.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

With each generation, a Holmesian adaptation is introduced with some variation of success. However, just as Holmes feels about Watson, the loyal fans of Holmes merely see but do not observe. They become enveloped in the stories and characters, both the originals and the adaptations, but nobody stops to question the characters’ success.

Are You Gonna Go My Way hierdoor minder opvalt.
