Fans gathered more than two hours before tipoff to witness Harry Statham’s historic 880th coaching victory on Dec. 1, 2004.

A sellout crowd of more than 1,500 people were on hand for Harry Statham’s 1,000th career victory on Nov. 13, 2009.

The McKendree men’s basketball team plays its home games in the Melvin Price Convocation Center, which was built prior to the 1988-89 season. The arena was renamed the Harry M. Statham Sports Center in 1998 following Coach Statham’s 700th career victory. The facility was also the site of Coach Statham’s record-breaking 880th win on Dec. 1, 2004, and his 1,000th career win on Nov. 13, 2009. Entering the 2015-16 season, the Bearcats have won better than 81 percent of the games played at the Statham Center, including two perfect home campaigns. The Statham Center was renovated in the summer of 2013, with improvements including a brighter paint scheme, new branding and the refurbishing of the playing floor with an updated design.

The McKendree men’s and women’s basketball teams moved into spacious new locker rooms prior to the 2012-13 season. The locker room is furnished with individual dressing stalls for 15 players as well as storage space and state-of-the-art technology that allows the Bearcats to break down video.

The McKendree University Sports Performance Center opened in the spring of 2014. The building measures 7,500-square feet for the Bearcat athletic programs to utilize for strength and performance training. The facility is filled with lifting racks along with approximately 19,000 pounds of free weights. It also contains 2,400-square feet of artificial turf for use in sprint and sled drills.

ASSISTANT COACH ERIC ECHELBARGER Eric Echelbarger will mark his 13th season as a member of the McKendree men’s basketball coaching staff in 2015-16. He will aid Coach Statham in on-the-floor coaching, scouting and recruiting. Echelbarger joined the Bearcats’ staff after closing out his collegiate career as a two-year member of the Bearcats’ squad, playing a key role at guard. During Echelbarger’s tenure at McKendree (as a player and coach), McKendree has amassed 305 victories and helped the Bearcats to eight appearances at the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Champion- ship in Kansas City. The Bearcats reached the American Midwest Conference Tournament title game nine times in a 10-year span. Over McKendree’s last four years as members of the AMC, Echelbarger helped guide the Bearcats to an overall record of 105-33 with a 52-4 mark in AMC play along with four straight AMC regular-season titles. McKendree finished each of those last four regular seasons with an NAIA top 25 ranking. As a player, Echelbarger helped the Bearcats to 64 victories and consecutive AMC champi- onships. He was a co-captain on the 2002-03 squad that went 34-4 and reached the semifinal round of the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship. Echelbarger was a two-time member of the AMC Academic All-Confer- ence team and was named as a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete as a senior in 2003. Echelbarger graduated from McKendree in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and completed requirements for a master’s degree in education in 2007. For the last 11 years, Echelbarger as been the director of the McKendree University Basketball Camp, which has grown into one of the largest of its kind in southern Illinois. He is also an associate instructor in the McKendree physical education department. Echelbarger and his wife Ericka -- a 2005 McKendree graduate -- reside in O’Fallon. The Echelbargers have one son, Ethan.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH CALEB BATSON Caleb Batson begins his third season as a member of the McKendree University men’s bas- ketball coaching staff. He joined the Bearcats’ staff as a student assistant coach in the fall of 2013. Since the beginning with the 2014-15 season, Batson has filled the role of volunteer assistant coach at McKendree. He assists the program with on-the-floor coaching, scouting and video editing duties. A native of Abingdon, Ill., Batson played basketball for four years at Abingdon High School. He helped the Commandos to three 20-win seasons during his career, and led the team in most offensive rebounds during his senior year. Batson completed requirements for his bachelor’s degree in physical education with minors in coaching and sports psychology from McKendree in May 2014. Batson lives in Lebanon.

STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH GLEN PATTON Glen Patton joins the McKendree University men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2015-16 season. Patton will be a student assistant coach for the Bearcats, helping with practices, on- court coaching and video duties. Patton, a native of St. Louis, Mo., comes to McKendree from Ranken Technical College. He graduated from McCluer High School, where he ranked among the top 10 percent in his gradu- ating class. In addition, Patton received the Academic Letterman Award from McCluer. A sophomore at McKendree, Patton is majoring in computer science.

Conant High School, where he posted 15 points and seven rebounds per outing as a senior for the Cougars. “Rob is one of our most complete players,” said Statham. “He can play any position from the two through the five for us.
