18 December 2014 2015 & 2016 INTRODUCING VIKING OCEAN CRUISES

Join us as we usher in a new era of ocean cruising by taking the innovative thinking behind our award-winning river cruises and bringing it to the epic setting of the sea. This cruise experience is the one our river passengers inspired us to create. We have asked our Guests, listened, observed — and now crafted the ultimate kind of cruise: one focused on destinations. And in 2015, we will take destination cruising from the rivers to the ocean with the maiden season of the beautiful Viking Star®. With demand far outpacing availability on Viking Star®, we are pleased to announce that in 2016 she will be joined by two equally beautiful sister ships, Viking Sea® and Viking Sky®.

44 December 2014 Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

Continuing our report on places visited during our recent cruise on Silver Spirit. We have arrived in Katakolon described by some as a sleepy, port town and more importantly gateway to Olympia the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Most people on the ship have chosen to go on the 40 minute drive to Olympia, whilst others have either walked into the town or stayed onboard. Ancient Olympia is one of the most celebrated archaeological sites in Greece and is home to a sacred sanctuary dedicated to Zeus. The ruins of many of Olympia’s structures are still visible. More than 3 million people annually visit the site and the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Cafes adorn the Katakolon waterfront with the side streets and two parallel streets to the waterfront packed with a variety of shops selling handicrafts, ceramics, jewellery, lace, handcrafted sandals, cotton clothing and leather goods. We managed to find some bargains and found the locals very friendly and helpful. JT/KT

www.cruisingnews.com 45 Rethimnon – Crete & Monemvasia – Greece Sharing with you two more places we visited on our Aegean Odyssey cruise. Firstly we anchored off Rethimnon, a picturesque town with a beautiful harbour and massive Venetian fortress. Our tour took us to the Palace of Knossos situated on the northern coast of Crete and about an hour and a half from Rethimnon. Knossos was the ancient capital of the mythical king Minos. The original palace was constructed around 1,900 BC. The palace complex is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete. Next day we arrived in Monemvasia, a town in Laconia, Greece, known as the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock. The town and fortress were founded in 583. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period. There are many souvenir shops and restaurants. JT/KT

As the Navy’s largest ship was commissioned with all due pomp and ceremony, P&O Cruises’ Pacific Dawn was a near neighbour as the cruise ship underwent a scheduled dry dock and refurbishment at Garden Island. “In addition to saluting the Royal Australian Navy on such an important day, P&O Cruises has a very strong affinity with the name HMAS Canberra,” Ms Sherry said. “For many years, Canberra was one of the most famous and loved ships in the P&O fleet and was of course a regular visitor to Sydney Harbour. In keeping with HMAS Canberra being commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy fleet, P&O’s Canberra saw high profile military service as a troopship during the Falklands War.”
