Bower As partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy The University of Toledo May 2010 Ecological reconstruction challenges the historical chasm between culture and nature by using the normative implications of ecology to assert a primacy of relations in experience. Drawing upon the framework of John Dewey and classical American Pragmatism, I sketch out an experimental method for thinking about environmental philosophy that follows this reconstruction, moving beyond both applied ethics and dogmatic values. Central to this move is the possibility of opening up ecotonal spaces, literal and theoretical cites of intensified interaction between cultural and natural systems. These spaces furnish reconstruction with the experiences necessary to generate new concepts that set human communities on the course towards greater ecological attentiveness. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my committee for their wisdom and guidance, my family for all of their support, and everyone who has ever joined me for a walk in the woods. There is a music to it all, not the least when in a minor key. - Holmes Rolston III, Environmental Ethics, p. 43 V Abstract This thesis deals with, defends, and amends the axiological position called Multicentrism as presented by philosopher Anthony Weston. The question is whether axiological Multicentrism ought to be preferred over other monistic forms of axiological theories, and whether a multicentric axiological theory can withstand the critiques that follow such a view. Multicentrism offers an alternative axiological view than the commanding axiological theories in environmental ethics by arguing for the organic, dynamic, and interrelatedness of environmental values, as well as an embodied application through ethical encounters. Through critiques, additions and amendments this work seeks to strengthen Weston’s multicentric thesis by making it able to solve concrete ethical dilemmas, as well as further strengthening its parallelism with ethical experience. -

Southern African Journal of Environmental Education, Vol. 22, 2005 Ethics Research in Environmental Education Bob Jickling Lakehead University, Canada Abstract This paper takes a research orientation towards ethics and, in so doing, frames ethics as processes of inquiry and stories to be told. First, it explores ways that ethics might be ‘reimagined’, situated in everyday contexts and interpreted in ways that allow its stories to do work and invite readers and listeners to consider ethics. Second, it creates some openings to imagine ethics as a series of re-constructive experiments. Finally, this paper is an invitation to engage in ‘ethics research’ within environmental education. Ethics Research in Environmental Education1 Twenty-five years ago I moved to the Yukon and began teaching in a small rural school. Most of the students were First Nations. It was a challenging job, but one that provided many lifelong lessons and I am indebted to many people for these opportunities. One important teacher was Mrs Lucy Wren, a community elder who came to the school to teach the Tlingit language, traditional crafts and to tell her stories. She was also my first environmental ethics teacher – though she wouldn’t call it that. Mrs Wren told many stories but I was most moved by the one about how owls came to be as they are today. She told me how, in the old days, owls were much larger than they are now and how, in difficult times, they could threaten children and old people when other food sources weren’t available. This story featured conversations with animals, in this case an owl. -

W. F. Hegel, Phenomenology of Spirit VI Abstract This thesis deals with and defends the position in environmental philosophy known as environmental pragmatism. Contextualized against the dominant background of monistic non- anthropocentric theories in environmental ethics, this position attempts an alternative account both of intrinsic value in non-human nature, and of the task of ethics in itself. Presenting some contributions from such authors as Bryan Norton, Anthony Weston, Andrew Light, Kelly Parker and Ben Minteer, the work attempts to promote a stronger practical orientation in environmental ethics which seeks to make contributions to solving concrete problems and become relevant to environmental policy.
