EPAULETTE FILLY STARS ON OPENING DAY A €150,000 filly hailing from the first crop of the Australian Gr.1 hero Epaulette held sway on the opening day of the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale, which began with a session that bettered Lot 222, a filly from the first crop ofEpaulette , who was the returns from the corresponding day in 2015. bought by Amanda Skiffington for €150,000 During a session that produced five six-figure transactions, it had appeared that centre stage might go to a pair of €140,000 colts, but the prized daughter of Epaulette emerged as the star the €80,000 purchase and Palmer-trained Hawksmoor won at turn when owner Chris Humber, standing with trainer Hugo Gr.3 level for him and was twice placed in Gr.1s. She then won the Palmer, saw off all challengers for the granddaughter of the Gr.2 German 1,000 Guineas for the Lael Stable in June. son of Dark Angel from James Hanly’s Ballyhimikin Stud. A €56,000 purchase at Goffs last November, this good moving bay was expected to play a starring role and he did not disappoint, as Dark Angel continued where he left off at last month’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale by supplying several high profile lots. The bidding for the colt (Lot 170), whose dam is a Desert Style half-sister to the Listed-winning Rose Hip (Rossini), began at €75,000 and initially concerned Nick Bradley before Joseph picture courtesy of www.tattersalls.ie O’Brien and Ed Sackville settled down to do battle and it was the latter who eventually emerged victorious. Sackville was further consolidating his position as one of the leading purchasers at this sale for the last number of years. “He comes from an excellent nursery and I thought that he was the nicest colt here today. Dark Angel has had a brilliant year and has just had another great weekend. He is for [Tom Dascombe’s] Manor House Stables,” declared Sackville. The second six-figure transaction of the day came when the Lot 77, a colt by Oasis Dream, who was bought by Classic first of three colts on offer this week by Sea The Stars made his trainer Kevin Prendergast for €140,000 entrance to the ring. Following a superb season for his sire, headed by the exploits of dual Derby hero Harzand, this colt This filly’s sale represented a tremendous triumph for vendor drew many admiring glances and he also boasted an encouraging Maurice Burns, as he bought this filly’s dam, Onomatomania, for update, as his juvenile full-brother, Raheen House, has begun his €21,000 at last year’s edition of the Goffs February Sale. career with a couple of runner-up finishes. Much earlier in the day, the only Oasis Dream yearling on offer this week fetched €140,000. The colt (Lot 77), who was listed as being sold for €210,000 as a foal last November, was offered from The Castlebridge Consignment and attracted major interest before trainer Kevin Prendergast, whose Awtaad supplied one of the highlights of 2016 when winning the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas, carried the day. Prendergast’s purchase is the first produce of Harmonic Note (Nayef), who proved a smart sort on the track during her time picture courtesy of www.tattersalls.ie with Ger Lyons, winning twice and reaching the frame at Listed level. Further back this is the family of the top class Hong Kong duo Mensa also known as Industrialist and Firebolt also known as Volata, as well as the crack two-year-old Wunders Dream. “He’s a very good individual and really looked the part. He’s by a good, successful stallion out of a decent mare and this has been a lucky sale for us in the past. At the moment I own him myself,” Lot 170, a colt by popular sire Dark Angel, who was bought declared Prendergast. by SackvilleDonald for €140,000 The other €140,000 transaction came in the shape of an excellent

Ultimately the battle for the bay (Lot 118), who was consigned by Mount Coote Stud, on behalf of breeders Sunderland Holdings Inc, came down to Aiden Murphy and Brendan Holland, with the former emerging victorious when he brought the price to €135,000. Murphy’s purchase is out of a placed half-sister to the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes heroine and Gr.1 1,000-third Maqaasid (Green Desert). “He’s been bought for a syndicate and he will come back to me first, and we will do the early work with him. He looks like a backend two-year-old/three-year-old type, although I’m not sure where he picture courtesy of www.tattersalls.ie will be going into training,” reported Murphy. Dark Angel was also responsible for one of the standout fillies of the sale and breeze-up man Willie Browne had to pull out all the stops to secure the €120,000 Yeomanstown Stud offering. The March-born bay was widely acclaimed as one of the star filly’s of yesterday’s session and Browne had to dig deep to see off Peter Doyle.
