  • Visit from Rt Hon. the Lord Brian Mawhinney and Charlie Swift
NEWSLETTER UPDATE APRIL 2018 WELCOME TO QUEEN KATHARINE ACADEMY’S NEWSLETTER Welcome to the second edition of the Queen Katharine Academy newsletter. It has been a busy term for the academy and I look forward to sharing our news with you. We have welcomed several important guests to the academy this term, including Dr Barnes, Chair of Trustees for Thomas Deacon Education Trust. Following his visit, Dr Barnes applauded the great enthusiasm of our pupils and was very impressed with the school’s attitude towards learning. The Rt. Hon. The Lord Brian Mawhinney also visited the school this term, witnessing the vast improvement the school has made since becoming Queen Katharine Academy. I was also delighted to discover this term that the number of first choice applications to the school this year have risen, with more parents and carers choosing Queen Katharine Academy as the preferred school for their child. This is an exciting time to be a part of our community and I hope you enjoy reading about the events and activities our students have enjoyed this term. Maths department raise £700 for NSPCC For the first time at Queen Katharine Academy, our maths department put together a week of maths- orientated activities. The aim was to encourage pupils to interact with numbers in a more practical and exciting way. The week ended with a casual clothes day in which students and staff dressed in number-related outfits. By donating to dress down, students and staff at the academy raised £700 for the NSPCC. This was the first time a secondary school in the area has worked with the NSPCC and we are very proud to support a charity that does such vital work for vulnerable children.

  • The Dublin Gate Theatre Archive, 1928 - 1979
Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections Northwestern University Libraries Dublin Gate Theatre Archive The Dublin Gate Theatre Archive, 1928 - 1979 History: The Dublin Gate Theatre was founded by Hilton Edwards (1903-1982) and Micheál MacLiammóir (1899-1978), two Englishmen who had met touring in Ireland with Anew McMaster's acting company. Edwards was a singer and established Shakespearian actor, and MacLiammóir, actually born Alfred Michael Willmore, had been a noted child actor, then a graphic artist, student of Gaelic, and enthusiast of Celtic culture. Taking their company’s name from Peter Godfrey’s Gate Theatre Studio in London, the young actors' goal was to produce and re-interpret world drama in Dublin, classic and contemporary, providing a new kind of theatre in addition to the established Abbey and its purely Irish plays. Beginning in 1928 in the Peacock Theatre for two seasons, and then in the theatre of the eighteenth century Rotunda Buildings, the two founders, with Edwards as actor, producer and lighting expert, and MacLiammóir as star, costume and scenery designer, along with their supporting board of directors, gave Dublin, and other cities when touring, a long and eclectic list of plays. The Dublin Gate Theatre produced, with their imaginative and innovative style, over 400 different works from Sophocles, Shakespeare, Congreve, Chekhov, Ibsen, O’Neill, Wilde, Shaw, Yeats and many others. They also introduced plays from younger Irish playwrights such as Denis Johnston, Mary Manning, Maura Laverty, Brian Friel, Fr. Desmond Forristal and Micheál MacLiammóir himself. Until his death early in 1978, the year of the Gate’s 50th Anniversary, MacLiammóir wrote, as well as acted and designed for the Gate, plays, revues and three one-man shows, and translated and adapted those of other authors.

  • Piers Morgan Outrage Over Brandpool Celebrity Trust Survey Submitted By: Friday's Media Group Monday, 19 April 2010
Piers Morgan outrage over Brandpool celebrity trust survey Submitted by: Friday's Media Group Monday, 19 April 2010 Piers Morgan has expressed outrage at being voted the sixth least trusted celebrity brand ambassador in a survey by ad agency and creative content providers Brandpool. Writing in his Mail On Sunday column, the Britain’s Got Talent judge questioned the logic of the poll, which named the celebrities the public would most and least trust as the faces of an ad campaign. But Brandpool has hit back at Morgan for failing to recognise the purpose of its research. Morgan, who also neglected to credit Brandpool as the source of the study, said: “No real surprises on the Most Trusted list, which is led by ‘national treasures’ such as David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Richard Branson and Michael Parkinson. “As for the Least Trusted list, I find the logic of this one quite odd. Katie Price, for example, comes top, yet I would argue that she’s one of the most trustworthy people I know… Then I suddenly pop up at No 6, an outrage which perhaps only I feel incensed about. Particularly as that smiley little rodent Russell Brand slithers in at No 7. Making me supposedly less trustworthy than a former heroin junkie and sex addict.” Morgan was also surprised to see Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Sharon Osbourne, Tom Cruise and Jonathan Ross in the Least Trusted list. However, he agreed with the inclusion of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Tiger Woods and Tony Blair, all of whom, he said, were “united by a common forked tongue”.

  • The Future of Fairfield Halls
THE FUTURE OF FAIRFIELD HALLS Sean Creighton, Norbury resident, historian, and Co-ordinator of the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Network A discussion contribution by Sean FRED SCOTT, CROYDON PIANIST, ON WORKING WITH FH FH has always been co-operative in allowing me to book events there focused on performances involving local young artists across genres of music. ‘Soundpractice has staged events including lunchtime concerts, pre-concert foyer performances and events for last year's Coleridge-Taylor Festival. This last especially was a great forum for young people to perform; some students of mine were able to have premiered a piece they had written around SCT, also involving LMP in the performance. Last November saw local Youth Theatre Company Studio 74 give the first performance in Ashcroft Theatre of a new musical by Stella Coussell (South London composer) called 'Song for the World', based around the life of SCT, a further performance for BHM 2013 is currently being arranged. in addition, Soundpractice has been able to put on concerts as fund-raisers for Skeletal Cancer Action Trust, some of these have featured people affected by that disease. More of these concerts are planned for 2014. There will be a series of concerts in Spring 2014 which will raise funds for SCAT, involving a celebration of the 80th birthday of eminent British composer, and South London resident, Justin Connolly, who will also be performing himself. Future concerts in 2014 will also include prominent international artists in recital who bring their considerable following to Croydon.
