ABSTRACT: Breeding biology of the White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans) in eastern Paraguay. I present the first detailed description of the breeding biology of the White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans), based on data collected over three breeding seasons during 1998-2001 at Aguará Ñu, Canindeyú, eastern Paraguay. Male nightjars defended small territories situated on the upper slopes of ridgelines. Each territory contained one or more “display arenas” at which the male performed nuptial display flights. Aggregation indices confirmed that the primary display arenas of males were significantly clustered within the survey area. Within their territories, males apparently selected display arenas on the basis of their structural characteristics: mounds used as arenas were significantly lower and broader than random mounds. Males engaged in display activity from late August to early January. On average, males performed 0.54 ± 0.04 display flights per minute during nocturnal focal watches, but there was considerable intra-male variation in display rate. Following a burst of activity immediately after their arrival at display arenas at dusk, male display rate was best explained by ambient levels of moonlight. Males produced a previously undescribed insect-like “tik tik” call when inactive on their territories. -

These new species and their hosts are: Mulcticola sicki sp. n. from the sand-coloured nighthawk, Chordeiles rupestris rupestris (Spix), Mulcticola ba- curau sp. n. from the common pauraque, Nyctidromus albicollis (Gmelin), Mulcticola tendeiroi sp. n. from the long-trained nightjar, Macropsalis forcipata (Nitzsch), Mulcticola piacentinii sp. n. from the short-tailed nighthawk, Lurocalis semitorquatus semitorquatus (Gmelin) (type-host) and L. s. nattereri (Temminck), and Mulcticola parvulus sp. n. from the little nightjar, Setopagis parvula (Gould). These species were compared primarily with Mulcticola nacunda Carriker, 1945 from the nacunda nighthawk, Chordeiles nacunda nacunda (Vieillot), which is one of the species of Mulcticola [ described herein differ from their congeners by exclusive characters such as the shape of anterior dorsal head plate, metasternal plate, subvulvar plates in females and genitalia in males. We increased the number of species in Mulcticola to 18 in total, with seven of them now known from the Neotropics. We present the main morphological characters to distinguish Mulcticola from other species of the Philopteridae parasitising Caprimulgiformes and also compile a detailed catalogue for species included in this louse genus. -

We experienced the amazing termitaria-covered landscape of Emas National Park, where participant Rick Thompson got this evocative image, including two Aplomado Falcons, and a Pampas Deer. Brazil is a big place, and it is home to a wide variety of biomes. Among its most famous are the Amazon and the Pantanal, both occupy huge areas and have their respective hydrologies to thank for their existence. In addition to these are drier regions that cut the humid Amazon from the humid Atlantic Forest, this is known as the “Dry Diagonal,” home to the grasslands we observed at Emas, the chapada de Cipo, and farther afield, the Chaco, Pampas, and Caatinga. We were able to dip our toes into several of these incredible features, beginning with the Pantanal, one of the world’s great wetlands, and home to a wide array of animals, fish, birds, and other organisms. In addition to daytime outings to enjoy the birdlife and see several of the habitats of the region (seasonally flooded grasslands, gallery forest, deciduous woodlands, and open country that does not flood), we were able to see a wide array of mammals during several nocturnal outings, culminating in such wonderful results as seeing multiple big cats (up to three Ocelots and a Jaguar on one night!), foxes, skunks, raccoons, Giant Anteaters, and others. To have such luck as this in the Americas is something special! Our bird list from the region included such memorable events as seeing an active Jabiru nest, arriving at our lodging at Aguape to a crowd of Hyacinth Macaws, as well as enjoying watching the antics of their cousins the Blue-and-yellow Macaws. -

Estos resultados se combinaron con los de investigaciones anteriores sobre el monte Roraima y la montaña Kopinang para esclarecer los patrones y época de reproducción en los tepuyes guyaneses. Los tepuyes de Guyana no están lo suficientemente estudiados ornitológicamente; nuestras investigaciones han sido las primeras en documentar la avifauna de estos tepuyes. En cada ubicación fueron estudiados los mismos rangos altitudinales, con alguna variación en el mes y posición. Patrones climáticos altamente variables influyen en gran medida en la vegetación de los tepuyes. Assessing Bird Migrations Verônica Fernandes Gama Master of Philosophy, Remote Sensing Bachelor of Biological Sciences (Honours) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2019 School of Biological Sciences Abstract Birds perform many types of migratory movements that vary remarkably both geographically and between taxa. Nevertheless, nomenclature and definitions of avian migrations are often not used consistently in the published literature, and the amount of information available varies widely between taxa. Although comprehensive global lists of migrants exist, these data oversimplify the breadth of types of avian movements, as species are classified into just a few broad classes of movements. A key knowledge gap exists in the literature concerning irregular, small-magnitude migrations, such as irruptive and nomadic, which have been little-studied compared with regular, long-distance, to-and- fro migrations. The inconsistency in the literature, oversimplification of migration categories in lists of migrants, and underestimation of the scope of avian migration types may hamper the use of available information on avian migrations in conservation decisions, extinction risk assessments and scientific research. In order to make sound conservation decisions, understanding species migratory movements is key, because migrants demand coordinated management strategies where protection must be achieved over a network of sites. In extinction risk assessments, the threatened status of migrants and non-migrants is assessed differently in the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, and the threatened status of migrants could be underestimated if information regarding their movements is inadequate. In scientific research, statistical techniques used to summarise relationships between species traits and other variables are data sensitive, and thus require accurate and precise data on species migratory movements to produce more reliable results. -

To improve our understanding of the ecology of nocturnal tropical birds, we monitored the calling activity of two Neotropical nightjars, the Little nightjar (Setopagis parvula) and the Common pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis), over an annual cycle at four sites in the Brazilian Pantanal. The calling activity of both species was restricted to the noc- turnal period and showed peaks of activity just before dawn and just after dusk. The Little nightjar was detected from early June to late January owing to the migratory habits of the species, while the Pauraque was detected throughout the year. Our results suggest that the breeding season of both species starts in August, and the nesting phase probably takes place in September at the end of the dry season. This might be related to the typical increase in arthropod abundance after the first rains in tropical habitats with seasonal rainfall. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: MOLECULAR SYSTEMATICS OF NIGHTJARS AND NIGHTHAWKS (CAPRIMULGIDAE) Kin-Lan Han, M.S., 2006 Directed By: Dr. Michael J. Braun, Adjunct Professor, Behavior, Ecology, Evolution and Systematics Program Caprimulgidae, a cosmopolitan family of nocturnal or crepuscular insectivorous birds, comprises the subfamilies Caprimulginae (nightjars) and Chordeilinae (nighthawks). A phylogeny was reconstructed using cytochrome b, c- myc and growth hormone DNA sequences. Likelihood, parsimony and Bayesian analyses identify four major phylogenetic groups, three New World and one Old World. One New World clade consists of whip-poor-wills and relatives; a second consists of two traditional nighthawk genera, Chordeiles and Podager; a third consists of the remaining Neotropical taxa. C. enarratus, a Madagascan endemic, branches before these clades, and has no close relatives among the species sampled. The subfamilies are not monophyletic, suggesting the morphological specializations characterizing “nighthawks” evolved multiple times. Eurostopodus forms the earliest branches of the tree and may be paraphyletic. Caprimulgus is polyphyletic with respect to many other genera in the family, which are often defined by distinct plumage traits that may reflect sexual selection. In 1921 he was appointed an, „associate“ of the museum. One of his duties was to prepare, under the direction of Outram Bangs, Curator of Birds, a card catalogue of the MCZ bird collection, following Bowdler Sharpe’s Hand-list of the Genera and Species of Birds (1899- 1909). This was a tedious task inview of the size of the existing collection and the avalanche of new specimens pouring into the museum. The job was made especially complicated by the many new taxa that had been described since Sharpe’s time and also because ornithological systematics was coming of age and many of Sharpe’s „species“ were now recognized as taxa of polytypic species. As Peters tried to reconcile Sharpe’s increasingly obsolescent Hand-list with the then-current taxonomy, it was apparent that it was time for a new compilation. It is not known precisely when Peters decided to prepare such a work, but probably it was in 1927, the year in which Thomas Barbour, a vigorous, enthusiastic, and, above all, actively supportive person, became Director of the MCZ and a rejuvinated museum began to reflect the traits of its new leader. -
