AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Cindy Blakeley for the Master of Arts (name of student) (degree) in English presented on May 12, 1993 (major) (date) Title: John Donne's Alchemical Vision ~.~ Abstract Approved. From the earliest of times, many have pursued the goals of alchemy, a torm ot chemistry and speculative philosophy in which advocates attempted to discover an elixir ot lite and a method for converting base metals into gold. To the true alchemist, the "Great Work" was more than a science or a philosophy--it was a religion. The seventeenth-century poet, John Donne, though not a practicing alchemist, was himself interested in alchemy's religious connotations. In his poetry, he indicates his concern with man's spiritual transcendence which parallels the extraction of pure spiritual essences from any form ot base matter. In addition, the presumed sequence in which he writes his poems (precise dates of composition are, as yet, not established) reveals his growing fascination with the spiritual message suggested by alchemy. In "Loves Alchymie," likely written before Donne's marriage to Ann More, Donne is pessimistically questioning man's ability to transcend his base physical nature and, therefore, doubts the validity of spiritual alchemy. Then, during his love affair with and marriage to Ann More, he feels his new experiences with love and recently acquired understanding of love prove man is capable of obtaining spiritual purity. At this time, he writes "The Extasie," "The Good-Morrow," and "A Valediction Forbidding Mourning," employing basic alchemical imagery to support his notion that a union of body, soul, and spirit between man and woman is possible. -

Alchemical Symbols on Stećak Tombstones and their Meaning ("Lapis Philosophorum") Amer Dardağan, MA Go directly to the text of the paper Abstract Stećak is the official name for approximately 70,000 mysterious medieval tombstones scattered across Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the border areas of Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. To understand the meaning of the many symbols of alchemy and theurgy on the stećak tombstones, a researcher of medieval religions must relate to a world in which spirituality and Hermetic philosophy play a central role. In order to grasp the phenomenology of stećci (plural of stećak) in their total complexity, the symbols should be interpreted through philosophy (Neoplatonism), theology (Cataphatic and Apophatic theology), and the practices of alchemy and theurgy. For example, one recurring motif is the appearance of an unexpected third component in alchemical work. The alchemical imagination constantly reminds us that opposing forces in nature have to unite to form a special relationship, which through their unification, the “mysterious third” (Alchemical "Egg," "Philosopher's Stone," "Tree of Life") occurs that transcends ordinary existence. Without this kind of basic knowledge of the principles and philosophy of Neoplatonism and Hermeticism, it is very difficult to understand the symbols found on the tombstones. In the past, most Medieval scholars believed the stečak symbols were only decorative motifs and completely overlooked the deeper philosophical and spiritual content that was part of the Bosnian religious tradition at that time. The main goal of this paper is to provide readers with deeper insights on stećci as one of the most mysterious phenomena of Medieval Europe, and to reveal their spiritual and intellectual relationship with the practice of alchemy through interpretation of inscribed symbols on these tombstones and their connection with Neoplatonic and Hermetic philosophy. -

WHITE JADE RING AND QUEEN MOTHER OF THE WEST As for the foundation and succession myths of early Chinese dynasties, Allan holds that “Ancient Chinese literature contains few myths in the traditional sense of stories of the supernatural but much history” (Allan, 1981: ix) and “history, as it appears in the major texts from the classical period of early China (fifth-first centuries B.C.),has come to function like myth” (Allan, 1981: 10). While “the problem of myth for Western philosophers is a problem of interpreting the meaning of myths and the phenomenon of myth-making” as Allan remarks, “the problem of myth for the sinologist is one of finding any myths to interpret and of explaining why there are so few.” (Allen, 1991: 19) To decode why white jade enjoys a prominent position in the Chinese culture, the underlying conceptual structure and unique culture genes should be investigated. -

Received December 29th, 2009 Béla Mester Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Philosophical Research, Etele út 59-61, HU–1119 Budapest [email protected] Censorship as a Typographical Chimera John Milton and John Locke on Gestures1 Abstract The aim of my paper is to show some elements in Milton’s and Locke’s political writin gs, depending on their attitudes to different media. Milton in his argumentation against censorship must demonstrate that all the ancient instances for censorship, usually cited in his century, can be interpreted as examples of another phenomenon. However, Milton, analysing loci of Plato’s Republic and some Scriptural topics, recognises the scope and significance of nonconceptual, nonprinted, nonverbal forms of communication; he des cribes them as signs of childish, female or uneducated behaviours, as valueless phenomena from the point of view of political liberty incarnated in the freedom of press. John Locke’s attitude is the same. I will show a chain of ideas, similar to Milton’s one, in his Two Tracts on Government and in his Epistola de tolerantia, focusing the analyses on the concept of adiaphora (indifferent things). However, Milton was not a researcher of the media, and his aim in his booklet was not an analysis of homo typographicus’ thought on the freedom of thought itself, depended on the medium of the printed book; his thinking inevitably met the links between our ideals on the freedom of thought and different media by which we express them. -

INTRODUCTION The notion of the public sphere, or more precisely the bourgeois public sphere, associated with German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, has become ubiquitous in eighteenth-century cultural studies. Scholars concerned with media and democratic discourse have also invoked Habermas. Nonetheless, the relationship between the emergence of the public sphere and the emergence of copyright in early modern England has not been much discussed. Alchemical Theory The One Thing (or the Subtle Ether) Space, whether interplanetary, inner matter, or inter-organic, is filled with a subtle presence emanating from the One Thing of the universe. Later alchemists called it, as did the ancients, the subtle Ether. This primordial fluid or fabric of space pervades everything and all matter. Metal, mineral, tree, plant, animal, man; each is charged with the Ether in varying degrees. All life on the planet is charged in like manner; a world is built up in this fluid and move through a sea of it. Alchemical Ether, which some Hermeticists call the Astral Light, determines the constitution of bodies. Hardness and softness, solidity and liquidity, all depend on the relative proportion of ethereal and ponderable matter of which they me composed. The arbitrary division and classification of physical science, the whole range of physical phenomena, proceeds from the primary Ether, for science has reduced matter as we know it to nothing but Ether, which, although not solid matter, is still matter, the First Matter of the alchemists. When most of us speak of matter, of course, we usually visualize solid substance, but it has been proved by that matter is not actually solid, but merely a stress, a strain in the etheric field of time and space. The atom and the electrons and protons of which it is composed, all move in a sea of Ether, so, that in accordance with this theory of alchemy, the very air we breathe, the very bodies we inhabit, all things most likewise be moving in this sea of Ether, the parent element from which all manifestation has come. -

Chapter 8 The Senses and Human Nature in a Political Reading of Paradise Lost Jens Martin Gurr Milton, so far as I know, is the first to turn to the story of the Fall to explain the failure of a revolution.1 Introduction Let us begin with what seems a politically inconspicuous passage on the five senses. Here is Adam, lecturing Eve on reason, fancy and the senses: But know that in the soul Are many lesser faculties that serve Reason as chief; among these fancy next Her office holds; of all external things, Which the five watchful senses represent, She forms imaginations, airy shapes, Which reason joining or disjoining, frames All what we affirm or what deny, and call Our knowledge or opinion [. .].2 What we find here is a rather standard early modern understanding of the relationship between reason, fancy and the senses.3 But what is illuminating is the way in which this discussion is metaphorically politicized by means of the body politic analogy: the relations among the inner faculties, as so often in Milton, are rendered in the political terminology of rule, domination and 1 Hill Ch., Milton and the English Revolution (London: 1977) 352. 2 Milton John, Paradise Lost, ed. LIBERATE FREEDOM FROM ITS IDEOLOGICAL BAGGAGE! Liberate Freedom from Its Ideological Baggage!1 Kaarle Nordenstreng Abstract In the West, press freedom is typically understood as self-evident – as part of a pervasive ideology rather than of a rational doctrine. Therefore, while cherish- ing the idea of freedom, there is a need to deconstruct libertarian myths about press freedom. For instance, the metaphor of a free marketplace of ideas turns out to be something other than the original liberalism proposed by John Milton and John Stuart Mill. The history of ideas does not support a (neo)liberal notion of freedom, but rather a concept of freedom tied to moral values. Hence narrow-minded advocates of Western freedom are just as fundamentalist as those Islamists who are designated as such. Keywords: press freedom, liberalism, free marketplace of ideas, self-righting truth, John Milton, John Stuart Mill Introduction Freedom is a cornerstone that guides our ways of thinking about media and society. In the Western tradition, press freedom is typically understood as a self-evident concept – as part of a pervasive ideology rather than of a rational doctrine. For this reason, we are invited to take critical excursions into the concept of freedom, in general, and press freedom, in particular. I call this an exercise in deconstructing libertarian myths about press free- dom. As a starter, we should recall the landmark documents that the inter- national community (UN) adopted in the 1940s: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and the Constitution of UNESCO of 1945. These introduced an idea of media freedom that is quite balanced and far from the ultra-libertarian version conventionally held in dominant Western thinking – namely, that freedom means absence of state control. -

William Pallister reminds or perhaps informs Miltonists of the centrality of rhetoric in the Renaissance and its utility both for persuasion and morality. He argues that contemporary criticism has overlooked the formal poetic and rhetorical presentation of Milton’s ideas (7–8).
