PROGRAM NOTES Yankee Doodle dates from the Seven Years’ War, known in America as the French and Indian War, and the American Revolution. It is the state anthem of Connecticut.

The Battle Cry of Freedom was written in 1862 during the Civil War and was also used as a campaign song for Lincoln’s 1864 election and other subsequent elections such as Garfield’s in 1880.

Folk songs are a timeless evocation of a country or a particular city. The melody of Scarborough Fair is in the Dorian mode and typical of the middle English period. Scarborough is in North Yorkshire. Leen ‘t Hart has constructed variations On the Bridge at Avignon (Sur le Pont d’Avignon) a beloved French folk song about a dance performed under the bridge (Pont Saint-Bénézet) in Avignon dating from the 15th century. The haunting Come to Back to Sorrento evokes the beautiful town on the Bay of Naples. The Londonderry Air or Danny Boy is Ireland itself.

The Ashokan Farewell, composed by American folk musician Jay Ungar in 1982 served for many years as the goodnight or farewell waltz at the annual Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps at the Ashokan Field Campus of SUNY New Paltz in Upstate New York run by Ungar and his wife Molly Mason who gave the tune its name. It was used as the title theme for the 1990 PBS television miniseries, The Civil War by .

Sally Slade Warner, master arranger for the carillon, realized this clever of Stardust while at a winter carillon festival at the Bok “Singing Tower” Carillon in Lake Wales, Florida.
