It is encouraging to note that some countries in Africa are already embracing this call with huge investments and commitments to STI and STEM; examples of such countries include Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, South Africa and Ethiopia. ATPS conti nues to support African countries and governments, especially the private sector actors to engage in partnerships to leapfrog development in this sector. This editi on highlights signifi cant events, Wachievements and challenges of the ATPS during the quarter. In general, I am happy to inform that ATPS conti nues to soar higher in implementi ng its overall objecti ve of promoti ng the generati on, disseminati on, mastery and use of science, technology and innovati on (STI) for sustainable development in Africa. Some notable events, achievements and challenges are highlighted. During the quarter, the LandInfo mobile app which is currently being promoted by the ATPS won the inaugural Climate Informati on Prize (Wazo Prize) in Kenya with a cash award of $5,000 (Ksh.500, 000) off ered to the ATPS. LandInfo app is a community- driven app that enables users to instantaneously access climati c and soil informati on and interpret them in the context of local conditi ons and values, including crop preferences for specifi c soils at point given locati ons. ATPS is currently seeking for support to out-scale the LandInfo technology to the rest of Africa with target to build the capacity of agricultural extension agents, farmers, pastoralists, and land use managers to use the technology to improve agricultural producti vity, land-use planning and climate change resilience. Dr. Nicholas Ozor, ATPS Executi ve Director ATPS concluded a research project on (AAIN). Abstract The general objective of the study was to determine effect of leadership practices and employee competence on performance of the betting companies in Kenya. Despite of the betting companies recording super normal profit, due to tremendous growth of the industry, they have been accused of their ignorant on the welfare of the general citizen. In this regard, this study sought to investigate the effects leadership and employee competence would have on performance of betting companies in Kenya. The study was anchored on stewardship theory which informed on the study variables. Empirical studies on the relationship between leadership, employee competence and performance of the company was reviewed. Descriptive research design was used and the study targeted 457 employees at Sportpesa betting company.

Gambling Addiction and Threat to Development in Kenya: Assessing the Risks and Problems of Gamblers in Changing Society By Maurice N Amutabi Abstract Gambling is on the rise in Kenya. There have been fears that Kenya is becoming a nation of gamblers. On May 2, 2017 Sportpesa, a sports betting firm in Kenya declared 28 year old Samuel Abisai the winner of Kenya Shillings 221 million jackpot, through betting. The story made national headlines and Abisai was celebrated and invited to many TV and radio stations to share plans on what he would do with the money. He had become famous overnight. Sportpesa hailed the jackpot as “the biggest payout in African football history” and must have enjoyed the free publicity it received by media houses as Samuel Abisai moved from one station to the next. Such windfalls are making most young people convinced that good fortune could be all they need to change their lives. Even for those in official employment, the urge to try to win something, is high. It is for such reasons that Kenyan youth are increasingly getting lost into betting and gambling and many are getting to points beyond recovery. The purpose of this article is to assess the problem of betting and gambling and their effects n youth in Kenya and how this is undermining development in Kenya.
