NEW EXHIBITIONS The Values of Drawing Blair Benz, Larassa Kabel, Justin Meyers, J. Marlene Mueller, Jan Zelfer-Redmond

December 15, 2012 – April 14, 2013 Reception: Saturday, December 15, 5:00-7:00 pm

The Values of Drawing presents five artists working in Iowa and Nebraska who are exceptional when it comes to achieving textural subtlety from pencil and charcoal drawings. Works range widely in size and subject matter. • Blair Benz creates perfectly crafted, intimate charcoal drawings that present objects in a somewhat theatrical manner, heightened dramatically by his ability to achieve a sense of depth in his images. • Larassa Kabel’s unusual portraits of people and animals succeed in great part because of her uncanny skill at rendering soft and fragile details, regardless of the scale of the work. • Justin Meyers works in both charcoal and graphite in a straightforward, yet unsparingly intense manner, whether working on portraits or still-life images. • J. Marlene Mueller has studied the combinations of fire, smoke, and wood in large images that are rich and beautiful notwithstanding the subject matter. J. Marlene Mueller, Cascade I, 2011, charcoal, 50 x 38 inches • Jan Zelfer-Redmond uses drawing mediums much more for Courtesy of the artist pure mark-making or shaping an atmosphere, rather than for a depiction of people or things.

through December 2, 2012

This exhibition features works from the Art Center’s most recent community art project, City Art Quilts. This project kicked off in 2010, bringing scores of drawings by artists from throughout the region, which led to the creation of two dozen City Art Quilts that were placed throughout Sioux City.

This exhibition and fundraising event has brought all of these works back to the Art Center for a final exhibition and sale. The quilts include 4-foot square versions on MDO board that are suitable for outdoor settings, 3-foot versions on canvas that are great for indoor settings, and framed drawings that are perfect for that little empty spot on your walls. They may be purchased outright or as part of a silent auction through the end of Darren Maurer, Labyrinth the exhibition.

Larry Roots: On the Surface

through February 3, 2013

Larry Roots is one of our region’s most active artists and gallery directors. To celebrate his thoughtfully composed abstract artworks, the Art Center has brought together a large selection of work he has created over the last ten years. Roots has the ability to use paint and a variety of other materials to portray emotions and ideas that are incapable of being expressed well through everyday verbal communication. There is in his work the sense that he is painting forces and ideas rather than things, even if his art occasionally gives us the slightest glimpse of a landscape, a figure, or a written language.

Larry Roots, Connections, 2008, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 54 inches Courtesy of Modern Arts Midtown, Omaha Roots earned his B.A. in painting from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley. Though he is a full-time artist, he also directs two galleries with his wife Judy: Modern Arts Midwest in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Modern Arts Midtown in Omaha, Nebraska. ONGOING EXHIBITIONS The Sioux City Art Center Permanent Collection Underwriting for the Margaret Ann Martin Everist Permanent Collection Gallery and Educational Initiative is provided by the generous support of the M. A. Martin Everist Foundation.

Since July 2008, The Margaret Ann Martin Everist Permanent Collection Gallery has become the centerpiece of the Art Center’s educational program and a constant reminder about both the great artistic and collecting history of Sioux City.

The Gallery was reorganized in September 2012 with a new Permanent Collection brochure to accompany the exhibition. Visitors to the new installation of the gallery will find more examples of the Art Center’s Legacy Collection on view. This collecting initiative was established in 2008 by the generous members of the Blockbuster Partners to fund an increase in the Art Center’s holdings of major Midwestern artists. The Partners were then joined by the M. A. Martin Everist and the Gilchrist Foundations, and the Art Center Association Board of Directors with funds from the Heffernan Fund, as well as a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. The Legacy Collection now includes 17 works by 13 artists from throughout the region.

The Permanent Collection is supported with the Margaret Ann Martin Everist Educational Initiative, providing free educational materials, an outreach program to area public and private schools, and a Study Area, adjacent to the Permanent Collection Gallery. The Study Area’s non-circulating library allows visitors to learn more about the artists in the Permanent Collection. Recent additions to the non- Cesare Tiratelli, Italian, 1864-1933, Friends of the Family, after 1889, oil on canvas, 34 x 22.5 inches circulating library have been made possible, thanks in part to a grant from the Gift of the Sioux City Society of Fine Arts in celebration of the opening National Endowment for the Arts. of the Sioux City Art Center The Sioux City Art Center Family Guides

The Art Center’s Family Guides, the newest addition to the Education Initiative, developed this spring thanks in part to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, has been a huge success. As an added incentive for families to use the Guides, the Art Center initiated the Art Star project, in which children who complete one or more of the five Guides earn prizes and become eligible for monthly awards.

Due to the popularity of this project, the Art Center decided to extend it into a second phase. This second phase began in September and will continue through the end of 2012. Children will earn a prize for each of the Guides they complete. Those who complete all five guides will become eligible for additional awards as the project continues. Grant Wood’s Corn Room mural

The special installation of the Grant Wood mural was funded by a donation from Bill Turner.

Grant Wood’s Corn Room mural is shown in its entirety in the third-floor H. H. Everist Gallery. The Corn Room mural was one of four murals commissioned by Omaha businessman Eugene Eppley for his hotels. Originally part of the historic Martin Hotel, the Corn Room was created by Grant Wood in 1927, and then lost for decades under paint and old wallpaper, only to be rediscovered in 1979. In 1995, the mural was purchased by Sioux City attorney Alan Fredregill, who then donated the mural to the Art Center for the Permanent Collection. After significant conservation, the preserved mural, with its imagery slightly dimmed and its colors shifted toward a golden brown, was put on exhibit in 2007.

The Fredregill Fund, established by the Sioux City Art Center’s share of the auction selling price of Grant Wood’s Corn Room, allowed the acquisition of a number of prints by Wood and other important Regionalist artists. Work by Wood is on display in this gallery while works by other artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry are on display in the Grant Wood, Corn Room, 1927, oil on panel Purchased with funds provided by the Permanent Collection Gallery.
