The Quest for an American Lutheran Theology: Augustana and Lutheran Quarterly by Maria E. Erling he Augustana Synod’s 1948 centennial commemorated the Tfounding of its fi rst congregation.1 The seminary’s theological journal, The Augustana Quarterly, marked the anniversary by introducing readers to their Swedish heritage. Historical essays by Hilding Pleijel and others on nineteenth-century church life in Sweden explained how Swedish rural piety shaped personal and social life. Gustaf Aulen and Anders Nygren brought Swedish theology, with its fresh approach to the post-war crisis, to Augustana’s fully Americanized readership. The Augustana Quarterly renewed the relationship between Sweden and America at a crucial time. Lutheran leaders, especially in Scandinavia, were emerging from the crisis of the war with a profound sense that the future of Lutheranism itself depended on a fresh articulation of its Reformation theological heritage. They wanted and needed an American audience, while Lutherans in the United States also sought to participate in this work of theological renewal. American Lutheran relief eff orts had convinced Europeans of the American reputation for activism, but Germans and Scandinavians were suspicious of activism in theology, even though quietism was now demonstrably far worse. A new articulation of Lutheran theology was a part of the reconstruction eff ort needed to restore the spiritual legacy of the churches in the wake of the seeming capitulation of German Lutheranism to the totalitarian Nazi state. The Augustana Quarterly and The Lutheran Church Quarterly (a jointly produced journal from Gettysburg and Philadelphia) both worked to reorient Lutheran theology to address the needs of the hour. -

EVENSON NE of the most significant theological books published in O recent decades is Christus Victor by Gustaf Aulen. In it he suggests that there are three main ideas or theories of the atonement: the classic, the Latin, and the subjective-humanistic. That which makes the book both significant and controversial is the author's contention that the authentic Scriptural doctrine of the atonement is the classic idea, that Luther was an exponent of the classic idea, and that therefore the orthodox Lutheran doctrine of the atonement differs markedly both from Scripture and from Luther. Aulen asserts that "the doctrine of Lutheranism became a very different thing from that of Luther." 1 The translator in his preface informs us that "Dr. Aulen shows how sharp is the contrast between Luther and the Lutherans" (p. ix). Hence Christus Victor faces us with an insistent challenge to seriously re-examine and re-evaluate the "traditional" Lutheran doctrine of the atonement. That the question cannot be avoided is made clear by Edgar Carlson's assertion that Aulen's view of the atone ment is in the main taken for granted in present-day Lundensian theology (Seminarian, pp. 36 f.). This article is only incidentally a defense of the doctrine of the vicarious satisfaction. It is primarily a criticism of the methodology and theology presented in Christus Victor. This critical position does not mean that this reviewer finds nothing to commend in the book. In it there is much for which to be thankful. -

1 THE CHRISTUS VICTOR IN AFRICA Rev Daniel A. K. L. Gomis Africa West Field Strategy Coordinator, Church of the Nazarene I. Introduction Sub-Saharan Africa is still considered by many as the “Dark Continent” because of the atmosphere of fear, superstition, and belief in the spirit world pervading every aspect of the society. Most African Christians are aware of their forgiveness from sins, but very few are freed from the fear of death, demons, and Satan, a freedom Christ obtained by defeating these three enemies. The Christus Victor perspective of the atonement viewed as Christ’s destruction of sin and defeat of Satan and death is a solution to the needs of African Christians. In the content of sermons and songs in churches, one notices an insistence on Jesus’ victory over Satan. A constant opposition exists between Jesus and Satan, and African churches celebrate the cross by using terms like victory, destruction, authority, domination, and binding. However, churches heavily influenced by Western missionaries rarely mention the victory of Christ over Satan, even though this is ever-present in the worldview and life of Africans. This has created a void and leaves African Christians needing adequate answers from the Bible, Christian traditions, reason, and experience. The symbolism of Christus Victor – Christ's victory over the demonic powers – may overcome this deficiency. This paper examines the biblical and historical aspects of the Christus Victor model of the atonement, demonstrating its crucial place in the African worldview and closing with applications of the Christus Victor concept in the life of Africans. Penal Substitution in Church History
TMSJ 20/2 (Fall 2009) 199-214 PENAL SUBSTITUTION IN CHURCH HISTORY Michael J. Vlach Assistant Professor of Theology Recently, at least since the eighteenth-century liberalism gained a place in Protestantism, the penal-substitution view of Christ’s atonement has come under attack. The claim that the doctrine was unknown in the ancient church has emerged along with the idea that such a teaching was invented by the Reformers. The fact that the first thousand years of ancient Christianity frequently espoused the teaching that Jesus suffered death, punishment, and a curse for fallen humanity as the penalty for human sin shows the falsity of such a claim. The fact that early Christians supported other views of the atonement did not exclude the possibility of their supporting penal substitution also. Other views of the atonement include the classic/ransom, the satisfaction, the moral influence, and the governmental theories. Without discussing penal substitution thoroughly, the following church fathers and writings expressed their support for the theory: Ignatius, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Epistle to Diognetus, Justin Martyr, Eusebius of Caesarea, Eusebius of Emesa, Hilary of Poitiers, Athanasius, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Ambrose of Milan, John Chrysostom, Augustine of Hippo, Cyril of Alexandria, Severus of Antioch, and Oecumenius. Martin Luther wrote during the second Christian millennium, but he too endorsed penal substitution. Available writings show clearly that the early church supported a penal-substitution view of Christ’s death. * * * * * Since the rise of Protestant liberalism in the eighteenth century, it has become common for some to claim that penal substitution, the view that Christ died on behalf of sinners, is not a biblical doctrine. -

Incarnation and Atonement: An Anselmian Response to Aulen's Christus Victor EUGENE R. FAIRWEATHER N THE SPRING of 1930 Gustaf Aulen, then professor of systematic Itheology in the University of Lund, delivered the Olaus Petri lectures at Uppsala.1 A year later these lectures appeared in English as Christus Vic tor: An Historical Study of the Three Main Types of the Idea of the Atone ment,2 and for the past three decades they have played a considerable part in discussions of soteriology. In his introduction to the English edition Fr. A. G. Hebert, S.S.M., pointed out three potential benefits of Dr. Aulen's work. First and foremost, Aulen's exposition of the "classical" view of the atonement should help us to grasp the essential relation between the incar nation and the atonement-a crucial point at which other views had · allegedly been defective. Secondly, it would lead us to the true under standing of the eucharistic liturgy as the sacramental "memorial" of the atonement, by removing those misconceptions of Christ's sacrifice which had led directly to serious misinterpretations of the eucharist. Thirdly, Aulen's study should bring new understanding of Luther's view of the work of Christ, as distinguished from the later teaching of protestant orthodoxy, with all that such new understanding might mean for our estimate of the Refor mation, and so for the work of Christian reunion. Any one of these three suggestions would repay extensive study. In these comments, hpwever, I propose to concentrate on the first point, which is obviously fundamental, and to ask whether Aulen's treatment of the atonement is really compatible with a sound Christology. -

What wondrous love is this That caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse For my soul, for my soul, To bear the dreadful curse for my soul? When we sing such lines we are thanking God for the gracious action that led to our salvation. When the dying Jesus bears the curse for my soul, the result is my salvation. That’s what the Bible says. Now, just what does this mean? Just how is it that what Jesus Christ did accomplishes salvation for me and for the world? When systematic theologians get their hands on such questions, they utter big words. The big word here is Atonement. How should we understand the atoning work of Jesus Christ? In the theological brief that follows we will examine six conceptual models or theories of atonement: 1. Jesus as the Teacher of True Knowledge 2. Jesus as Moral Example and Influence 3. Jesus as Victorious Champion 4. Jesus as Satisfaction 5. Jesus as the Happy Exchange 6. Jesus as the Final Scapegoat But before dispensing thoughtson these six models, here are some pre-thoughts. Pre-Thoughts about Atonement Pre-Thought #1: words. To think about this question, we will need to borrow some big words from the theologians. Two of these multi-syllable words are Soteriology and Atonement. The first, ‘soteriology’, comes from the Greek New Testament, soteria, meaning salvation. -

Aulén Deconstructed On Inconsistencies in His Theology of Atonement and Lex Creationis HANS S.A. ENGDAHL Hans S.A. Engdahl is extraordinary professor emeritus of theology at the University of the Western Cape. [email protected] Introduction Gustaf Aulén’s (1879–1977) Christus Victor is today a famous piece of work, a classic in the dome of systematic or dogmatic theology. There are, however, signs of things not being quite right. I have previously referred to John de Gruchy’s infamous question to me at the University of Cape Town in 2002, when he was busy writing his book Reconciliation, Restoring Justice: “Hans, do you know if Aulén’s Christus Victor had any impact on Swedish society?” I then passed on the question to Göran Bexell, at the time professor of ethics in Lund, and he answered without hesitation: “I don’t think so.”1 One could argue that de Gruchy’s question was utterly South African and as such could not land in the Swedish geography in a decent way. However, I think the question was and is valid. Secondly, in a recent biography, Jonas Jonson writes: The belief that God reconciled the world to himself and the idea of Christ’s victory over the powers of evil gave courage to many in the re sistance against totalitarian systems. Aila Lauha Perspectives on the Effect of Anders Nygren’s Agape and Eros on the Theological Discussion in Finland Abstract: This essay traces the influence of Anders Nygren’s Agape and Eros among Finnish theologians. The essay argues that Nygren’s book was initially received with disinterest in Finland, but that sentiments shifted after World War II. Eventually, Nygren and the Lun- densian School came to exert significant influence on Finnish theology. Anders Theodor Samuel Nygren (1890–1978) was a professor of systematic the- ology at Lund University, Sweden, from 1924 to 1948. After that he was the bishop of Lund until 1958, and he was also the first president of the Lutheran World Federa- tion, serving from 1947–1952.1 Nygren has been known as one of the key figures of the Lundensian School of Theology, along with Gustaf Aulén (1879–1977) and Ragnar Bring (1895–1988). Together, they wanted to rediscover the major motifs of Christian theology and to discover how such motifs had been employed throughout history. Nygren was particularly interested in the motif of love. According to some scholars, strong religious conservatism combined with respect for the Lutheran heritage and individual religious experience had been characteristic of the Swedish Lutheran piety. The Lundensian theology is said to have been a kind of attempt to combine this older Swedish theological heritage with the new impulses from the theological liberalism of the twentieth century. Nygren’s most important scientific contribution was the two-volume work Eros och Agape (Agape and Eros), first published in Swedish between 1930–1936.2 In this work, consisting of more than 750 pages, Nygren analyzed the connotations of two Greek words for love, eros and agape. -
