Mauchline, East Ayrshire
Population 4,099 Mauchline is in East Ayrshire. Its early history is monastic and later a covenanter stronghold. Trade developed as an agricultural service centre and the town had cattle and horse fairs. A sandstone quarry was an important employer in the 18th century lasting until the 1950s. Box working and fernware were produced for over a century until 1933. The curling stone factory dates from the 19th century and is still in production.
