You Can't Miss Raylan Givens' Last Ride. It's been a long time coming, but the final season of Justified is finally upon us. Last season ended with Raylan putting off his transfer to Florida so that he could go hunt down Boyd once and for all. These two have been all up in each other's business for five years now, so there's no way Raylan Givens was gonna let that one go. Season 6 is the beginning of the end for Justified fans, and the premiere episode looks like it starts things off with a bang: it seems little Kendal Crowe has been kidnapped! That's an episode you don't want to miss. But if your Tuesday nights are a trifle busy, don't worry. Here are all the ways to watch Justified 's Season 6 premiere online and on-demand. In addition to baby Crowe getting taken, this final season promises even more drama and bigger crimes than ever before. Ava is currently working with the U.S. marshals to bring down Boyd — a position that puts her in a whole lot of danger, and gets her further mixed up in Raylan and Boyd beef. Oh, and Boyd's planning to rob a bank, like you do. Here's a teaser for what's in store for Justified fans in Season 6. Now, how could you miss that? Well, you don't have to. Here's how to watch online and on-demand. FXNow. Like a lot of cable networks, FX allows customers who already watch shows on their TVs also watch them on other devices, which is pretty nice of them. If you've been watching the good people of Harlan on your tube, just head over to FXNow's site, plug in your subscriber information, and you're good to go, free of charge. Unfortunately, you're going to have to wait until the day after the premiere to find out what Raylan, Boyd, Ava and the rest of the crew are up to now. If you're a cable subscriber, you can also watch the Justified premiere on Hulu (and even if you don't pay for FX, you can still watch clips from the episode, behind the scenes footage, and scenes from future episodes). Like FXNow, Hulu also doesn't put new episodes up until the day after they air, so avoid spoilers at all costs! The downside to this service is that you can only access the shows through a computer, not a phone or other mobile device. I'm sure a few minutes alone with Boyd, and Hulu would be happy to change that policy. iTunes and Google Play. Finally, a way for cord cutters to keep up with our favorite U.S. Marshal. If you don't pay for cable (or own a TV at all), you can still watch the Justified premiere. Like most TV episodes, iTunes offers episodes of Justified for $2.99 a piece, or the whole season for $34.99. There are already some short segments about Season 6 available on the site for free. Google Play is the cheaper option, with each episode available for $1.99, and the whole season for $22.99. Unfortunately, it seems like FX really wants you to watch their shows on an actual television, so you won't be able to buy the first episode of Season 6 until the day after it airs. What is this, 2005 ? Still, you need your Justified fix, and waiting 'til the whole season turns up on Netflix just isn't an option. Oh, the things we do for good TV. ELMORE LEONARD, 1925-2013 Elmore Leonard was born October 11, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to his father’s position working for General Motors, Leonard’s family moved numerous times during his childhood, before finally settling in Detroit, MI in 1934. Leonard went on to graduate high school in Detroit in 1943, and joined the Navy, serving in the legendary Seabees military construction unit in the Pacific theater of operations before returning home in 1946. Leonard then attended the University of Detroit, majoring in English and Philosophy. Plans to assist his father in running an auto dealership fell through on his father’s early death, and after graduating, Leonard took a job writing for an ad agency. He married (for the first of three times) in 1949. While working his day job in the advertising world, Leonard wrote constantly, submitting mainly western stories to the pulp and/or mens’ magazines, where he was establishing himself with a strong reputation. His stories also occasionally caught the eye of the entertainment industry and were often optioned for films or television adaptation. In 1961, Leonard attempted to concentrate on writing full-time, with only occasional free- lance ad work. With the western market drying up, Leonard broke into the mainstream suspense field with his first non-western novel, The Big Bounce in 1969. From that point on, his publishing success continued to increase – with both critical and fan response to his works helping his novels to appear on bestseller lists. His 1983 novel La Brava won the Edgar Award for best mystery novel of the year.

BELL PROSECUTION DOUBTS: LEGAL EXPERTS SAY WITNESS TESTIMONY THUS FAR BOLSTERS COPS’ CLAIMS THEY OPENED FIRE IN SELF-DEFENSE Newsday - Long Island, N.Y. Author: ANTHONY M. DESTEFANO Date: Mar 10, 2008 Section: NEWS Murray Richman is considered one of the deans of the criminal defense bar in New York City. With nearly 45 years’ experience trying and handling cases, Richman, 70, thought there was strong evidence of guilt against the detectives accused in the Sean Bell shooting - at least until their trial started two weeks ago. Now, he isn’t so sure. Richman is among a number of defense attorneys contacted by Newsday - none of whom have any connection to the case - who believe that so far the charges against the three cops are facing some serious headwind. The trial resumes today in Queens State Supreme Court. “The early impression thus far, to my satisfaction, they [prosecutors] have not made a case beyond a reasonable doubt,” Richman said after court adjourned last week. Richman was commenting in particular about the most serious first-degree manslaughter charge lodged against Detectives Michael Oliver, 36, and Gescard Isnora, 29. They are also accused of assault. Det. Marc Cooper, 40, faces misdemeanor reckless endangerment charges. Bell, 23, was killed and his friends Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield wounded on Nov. 25, 2006, in a 50-shot fusillade after they partied at the Kalua Cabaret. More evidence to come Richman and the other attorneys stressed that there was still more evidence to come for the prosecution and they could change their minds. But all agreed that witnesses called by the Queens district attorney’s office so far seemed to bolster the police officers’ self-defense argument.

  • Filmic Tomboy Narrative and Queer Feminist Spectatorship
UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Lynne Stahl May 2015 © 2015 Lynne Stahl ALL RIGHTS RESERVED UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP Lynne Stahl, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the ways in which American discourses of gender, sexuality, and emotion structure filmic narrative and the ways in which filmic narrative informs those discourses in turn. It approaches this matter through the figure of the tomboy, vastly undertheorized in literary scholarship, and explores the nodes of resistance that film form, celebrity identity, and queer emotional dispositions open up even in these narratives that obsessively domesticate their tomboy characters and pair them off with male love interests. The first chapter theorizes a mode of queer feminist spectatorship, called infelicitous reading, around the incoherently “happy” endings of tomboy films and obligatorily tragic conclusions of lesbian films; the second chapter links the political and sexual ambivalences of female-centered sports films to the ambivalent results of Title IX; and the third chapter outlines a type of queer reproductivity and feminist paranoia that emerges cumulatively in Jodie Foster’s body of work. Largely indebted to the work of Judith Butler, Lauren Berlant, and Sara Ahmed, this project engages with past and present problematics in the fields of queer theory, feminist film criticism, and affect studies—questions of nondichotomous genders, resistant spectatorship and feminist potential within linear narrative, and the chronological cues that dominant ideology builds into our understandings of gender, sexuality, narrative, and emotions.

  • Were Standard Oil's Fault Than Justifying Their Existence
CRANE - JCI.DOC (DO NOT DELETE) 12/20/2012 4:23 PM WERE STANDARD OIL‘S REBATES AND DRAWBACKS COST JUSTIFIED? DANIEL A. CRANE* I. INTRODUCTION Standard Oil‘s preferential railroad rebate structure lies at the heart of the seminal Standard Oil case, which culminated in the Supreme Court‘s 1911 affirmation that Standard Oil had violated the Sherman Act and should be broken up.1 Beginning in 1868, Standard Oil received rebates of varying amounts from railroads for crude and refined oil shipped east over their lines. In some later years, it also received drawbacks for oil shipped by independent refiners—Standard Oil‘s competitors. The rebates and drawbacks gave Standard Oil a competitive advantage over their rivals and accounted for a large part of the reason that John D. Rockefeller obtained such dominance in oil refining and distribution. The muckraking journalist Ida Tarbell made Standard Oil's discriminatory rebates a central feature of her crusade against the Rockefeller interests.2 The government also made the rebates a central point of its case,3 and the Supreme Court affirmed their illegality. Thereafter, the Interstate Commerce Commission effectively ended the legality of such rebates as a regulatory matter. From the beginning, however, pro–Standard Oil voices have argued that, far from exhibiting a rapacious strategy to destroy rivals, the rebates and drawbacks were simply a reflection of Standard Oil's superior efficiency. In this story, Standard Oil was able to exact rebates and drawbacks from the railroads because it was able to pass along * Professor of Law, University of Michigan.

  • A Critical Analysis of the Black President in Film and Television
“WELL, IT IS BECAUSE HE’S BLACK”: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BLACK PRESIDENT IN FILM AND TELEVISION Phillip Lamarr Cunningham A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2011 Committee: Dr. Angela M. Nelson, Advisor Dr. Ashutosh Sohoni Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Michael Butterworth Dr. Susana Peña Dr. Maisha Wester © 2011 Phillip Lamarr Cunningham All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Ph.D., Advisor With the election of the United States’ first black president Barack Obama, scholars have begun to examine the myriad of ways Obama has been represented in popular culture. However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present.
