2013 Host Families

Welcome from the Host Families Welcome to the Hanging H Ranch. We are happy to be your hosts for this year’s Cattlemen’s Ball. It has been a year of unbelievable generosity of time, talent, items, and dollars!

We know where the real credit is due and our thanks go out to all the volunteers and donors who have worked together to make this happen.

Make new friends...

As you help Eppley “ON THE TRAIL TO A CURE.”

Ralph & Beverly Holzfaster of Paxton, Nebraska, are lifelong Nebraska family farmers. They raised their five children on the farm Ralph’s parents homesteaded south of Paxton. Today the third and forth generations of family members are actively engaged in the farming and cattle feeding operation. Ralph was an Air Force Pilot and Missle Launch officer at Cape Kennedy. He came back to the farm, married Beverly, a Teacher in Paxton. They followed the harvest for 7 years, helped develop stubble mulch practices with Noble, Kraus, sunflower & Flex King. Farmed with Morrison-Quirk Co. at mile 26 Alcan hi-way. Worked with center pivot irrigation for 42 years, served on the Nebraska Ethanol Board, and completed 24 years on the Nebraska Public Board. Of all the opportunities we have had, working with the Cattlemen’s Ball, and the Eppley cancer center has been the most rewarding. Beverly and I are both cancer survivors. For your generosity & support, our heartfelt THANKS. Beverly and Ralph

Neal Hansen was born and raised in eastern Nebraska. The 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball will be held on Neal’s Hanging H Ranch near Sutherland. Neal’s grandparents were second generation Nebraska farmers. He returned to Nebraska after serving in the U.S. Navy and attended the University of Nebraska, earning his degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the founding management team of First Data Resources, President and CEO of Applied Communications, President-Data Services Group US West and Chairman and CEO of CSG Systems. He is active in a number of educational, healthcare and youth development organizations.

2 Cattlemens Ball 2013 Hansen’s Hanging H Ranch!

The 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball will be held at the beautiful Hanging H Ranch near Sutherland, Nebraska. The ranch includes substantial South Platte riverfront and wildlife habitat. It is the perfect setting for the Cattlemen’s Ball.

The ranch operation includes grain and hay production, a registered herd of Angus cattle and performance and ranch-bred quarter horses.

A significant effort has been undertaken at the ranch to restore pasturelands, create and improve wildlife habitat and work in partnership with Ducks Unlimited in protecting and restoring wetlands.

The Holzfaster’s Farm - it is in the 4th generation located 13 miles southwest of Paxton. Because of the accessabilities we are privilidged to be co-hosts with the Neal Hansen family and the Hanging H Ranch. We would be happy to have you come anytime. The coffee is always on.

Ralph Beverly and all our family

3 Cattlemens Ball 2013 Welcome from the Chairmen

We are pleased to welcome you, our guests, to another spectacular Cattlemen’s Ball. In addition to the excellent food and entertainment you have come to expect at each year’s Ball, other activities including a Ranch Rodeo have been added for your 2013 enjoyment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the 40 committee chair-people and their volunteers committed to making sure this year’s Ball again succeeds in raising significant funds for health care research.

Volunteers have come forward from communities in Keith, Lincoln, and Perkins counties—from FFA youth groups to Knights of Columbus and many other civic groups—we are proud and grateful for the way you have stepped up—to all of you we say “THANK YOU!”

The Cattlemen’s Ball is about Nebraskans working together to make good things happen.

8 Cattlemens Ball 2013 One of the world’s premier cancer research centers is right here in Nebraska. The Cattlemen’s Ball is making it even better.

Thank you for attending the 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball! We are deeply grateful to the people of Paxton and Sutherland and the surrounding communities who have worked together for many months to make this incredible event possible. A special thank you is extended to this year’s hosts, the Ralph and Beverly Holzfaster family, and Neal Hansen, for your generous commitment to this year’s Cattlemen’s Ball. We also extend our gratitude to the general chairs of this year’s Ball, Jon and Tim Holzfaster, for their outstanding leadership and hard work. We also thank the committee chairs, committee members, and the hundreds of volunteers for your time and your talents.

“On The Trail To A Cure,” the theme of the 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball, brings several things to mind. First, the way we diagnose and treat cancer has changed drastically since 1971, when President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act. Across four decades, the trail has led us to the twenty-first century, and the Human Genome Project, which mapped and decoded each of 25,000 genes found in the human genome. Along the trail, research has revealed that cancer is not one disease, but many different diseases, with distinct molecular and genetic characteristics. The many cutting-edge discoveries and treatments that have been developed over the past forty years have resulted in over 12,000,000 cancer survivors alive in the United States today! Tremendous strides have been made on the trail to a cure, but there is much more to do. The new Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (formerly the Kenneth H. Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., Eppley Cancer Center) will be leading the trail to a cure in the 21st century. Director, UNMC Eppley Cancer Center Construction began in May on the new Cancer Center complex, which is “The Cattlemen’s Ball provides funding expected to open in 2016. In the new cancer center, scientists and physicians for cancer research at the UNMC Eppley will be together in state-of-the-art facilities that encourage the exchange of Cancer Center that aids scientists and ideas and information. The integration of all cancer research and care on the physicians in developing new and improved methods for early detection UNMC campus into one location will provide all Nebraskans with a facility of cancer, as well as cutting-edge, they can be proud of, and one that will transform the delivery of state-of-the- personalized treatment plans for patients. art cancer care. It will be a model for cancer centers around the world. More people are surviving cancer and living longer thanks to the support of the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska, and the On behalf of the faculty, staff and patients of the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer countless individuals and organizations Center, we thank each of you for attending this year’s Cattlemen’s Ball. We are that selflessly donate time, effort and money to this cause.” so grateful for your ongoing support for this event. We all play an important part “on the trail to a cure!” We hope you enjoy the 2013 Cattlemen’s Ball, and look forward to seeing you again in 2014!

10 Cattlemens Ball 2013 Entertainment!

Saturday 8:30pm – 10:00pm • Main Tent

Meet LONESTAR – your headline entertainment for the Cattlemen’s Ball “Trail to a Cure”.

Known for merging their country roots with strong melodies and rich vocals, Lonestar has amassed RIAA-certified sales in excess of ten million album units since their national launch in 1995 and achieved ten #1 country hits including “No News,” “Come Crying To Me,” and their crossover smash “Amazed” (which was also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first record since 1983’s “Islands in the Stream” to top both charts). The band’s awards include a 1999 ACM Single of The Year for “Amazed” (the song also won the Song of the Year award) and the 2001 CMA Vocal Group of the Year.

Serenity Spurs!

Featured for the first time at the 2013 Ball are the iconic Serenity Spurs. The spurs are made of carbon steel with a patina, and when stacked are 6’ x 18’ and weigh approximately one ton. They were created by Shannon Hansen, formerly of Ogallala, now residing in Lincoln. He is currently welding program chairman for Southeast Community College at Milford. Hansen has shown work in the Modern Arts Midtown Gallery in Omaha as well as in Lincoln art galleries. A special use of the spurs will be to honor and remember loved ones affected by cancer. Individuals may purchase serenity ribbons depicting a specific cancer that may have touched their loved one. The ribbons will then be magnetically attached to the spurs for display during each Ball. It is expected that the spurs will travel the state as part of the annual Cattlemen’s Ball. The spurs have been sponsored by BlueCross and BlueShield of Nebraska and initiated by former State Senator and BC/BS Board Chair Emeritus, Jack Mills. According to a BC/BS spokesman, “The company is committed to giving back to customers and communities it serves.”
