Twitter. SnapChat. Social networking has changed the means by which we interact with one another but it shouldn’t change our ability to relate to each other. Whether it’s through the latest post or a 280 character tweet, members of society need to communicate effectively, apply critical thinking/problem solving skills, and demonstrate social and cultural awareness as responsible citizens. Northeast Community College’s Core Competencies lay out general education goals focused on building these abilities to make students successful within the classroom and beyond. GOAL #1: EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING Being accustomed to using technology to convey our thoughts can bring about challenges in face-to-face communication moments. Learning and then implementing the appropriate skills can make all the difference. • Be prepared by creating a thesis statement and identifying resources. • Organize thoughts to present a clear pathway from introduction to body to conclusion. • Practice. Focus on learning the content and then on nonverbal and verbal skills such as eye contact, gesturing, and voice projection and variation. GOAL #2: PURPOSEFUL WRITING Can you text or email your way to cross-generational understanding? If your instructor cannot figure out what you sent in your last message, chances are good that the answer is no. Being able to convey your thoughts in a manner understandable to everyone from your friends to your boss is critical for everyday success. Writing that
