Carone Named 13th Head Coach - Carone was tabbed by Athletic Director Walt Hameline as the 13th head coach of the Baseball program on February 2, 2012. The 2003 Monmouth graduate replaces Joe Litterio, who served as the Green & White’s head man for 12 years from 2000- 2011, before accepting an assistant position at Rutgers, his alma mater. Carone arrives on Grymes Hill after spending the last three seasons with Villanova.

Season Openers - Wagner has now lost 12-straight season openers following a 9-2 setback to Hawaii (2/23), last winning on February 26, 2000 by a 12-4 count at La Salle.

Not a Bad Match-Up - In the 2005 Seahawk season opener against Winthrop, current Boston Red Sox closer and two-time American League (AL) All-Star Andrew Bailey opposed the Eagles’ Kevin Slowey, who currently pitches for the Cleveland Indians organization after spending the last five seasons with the Minnesota Twins.

2012 NEC Poll - Wagner was slated to finish seventh out of nine teams in the annual NEC Preseason Poll. The Seahawks will be looking to return to conference tournament after missing the four-team playoff last year for the first time since the 2007 campaign, and just the second time in the last eight years. Monmouth was tabbed first with defending champion Sacred Heart second, CCSU third, Bryant fourth, LIU Brooklyn fifth, Mount St. Mary’s sixth, Wagner seventh, Quinnipiac eighth and FDU ninth.

Carone In The Pros - Carone has helped 13 of his former players, including 10 pitchers, sign contracts with Major League teams since 2006. Last year, Kyle McMyne became the Seahawk skipper’s highest draft choice when he was taken by the by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round.

Did You Know? That Carone coached the 2006 Wagner pitching staff that recorded a school-record 342 strikeouts while placing all three mem- bers of the starting rotation in professional organizations. Bailey is a relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox while Joe Testa is in the Washington Nationals’ organization. Andrew Huebner played two seasons in the Baltimore Orioles’ system.

Carone Tabs Collazo As Assistant Coach - Carone rounded out his first coaching staff with the appointment of Chris Collazo as an assis- tant coach. With the Seahawks, Collazo, a 2010 Monmouth graduate, will be responsible for the hitters and infielders while also serving as the Seahawks’ recruiting coordinator. He comes to Grymes Hill from Seton Hall where he had been an assistant since the fall of 2011 after working in the same capacity at Felician College. Both Carone and Collazo helped make Monmouth a perennial baseball power in the NEC, as Carone was the 2002 NEC Pitcher of the Year while Collazo earned 2009 NEC Tournament MVP honors en route to leading the Hawks to the Regionals.

“Hopefully We Will Get You Some Names To Go Along With Those Faces.” Wagner enters this season with just 12 returning letterwinners to go along with 19 newcomers, after losing 15 letterwinners. The pitching staff was hit the hardest as the Seahawks lost three of their four weekend starters and return just Van Spronsen, junior RHP Dakota Dvorak and sophomores RHP Ryan Casey, LHP Matt Morris and RHP Nick Pavia.

Just The Man For The Job - If there is a man to lead a young pitching staff it is Carone. In 2010, his Villanova pitchers posted the school’s lowest earned run average (ERA) in over a decade, ranking 32nd nationally at 4.37, despite the fact that 10 of the squad’s 14 hurlers were underclassmen.

Newcomer Breakdown - Among the 19 newcomers are 16 freshmen, one sophomore, one junior and one graduate student. 10 are position play- ers, seven are pitchers and two pitch and play the field. Additionally, 12 hail from the state of New Jersey while fueling a roster that features 16 Garden State natives among its 31 student-athletes.

Van Spronsen Leads The Pitchers - The pitching staff will be led by Van Spronsen, who went 2-4 with 34 strikeouts, against just 17 walks, with a 5.52 ERA over 62.0 innings. The Canadian native is the lone returning starter on the mound as the Green & White return just 11.1 percent (2/18) of their wins, 26.4 percent (109/411.2) of their innings and 24.9 percent (64/257) of their strikeouts.

Pavia, Morris Return From Injury - Pavia returns after missing the end of last season due to injury while Morris, who was the opening-day starter in 2011, will return midway through the season.

Dvorak Joins The Rotation - After two solid years in the back end of the bullpen, Dvorak will make the adjustment to the rotation. The lanky Floridian struck out 34 over 49.2 innings over the last two years while notching his first two career saves in 2011.

Rounding Out Returners From The Mound ... Is Casey. After seeing action in four games for 2.2 innings over the first 50 games, the sophomore righthander got the call in the season finale at eventual NEC Champion Sacred Heart and did not disappoint. Casey struck out three while not walking a batter before exiting to a no-decision after 6.0 innings of four-run ball.

2012 Wagner Baseball - Page 5 WagnerAthletics.com Higgins, Brown Lead The Way On Offense - The right side of the infield figures to be a strength for this year’s team as Higgins and Brown are slated to start at third base and shortstop, respectively. Last year, Higgins was second on the team in hitting at .329, including batting a team-best .346 during NEC games, with 13 extra-base hits, 24 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Brown, meanwhile, hit .277, including .326 during league play, with nine doubles, one , four home runs, 23 RBI and seven stolen bases.

Hunter Cracks The Line-Up - After managing just 38 at-bats over his first two collegiate seasons, Hunter saw the bulk of the time behind the plate in 2011 and did not disappoint, batting .327 with 12 doubles and 17 RBI.

Rounding Out The Returners - Alfano, Miller, sophomore Cliff Brantley and classmate Dave Pepe round out the returners from last year’s team. Alfano cracked the line-up late in the year and hit .286 with five doubles over 32 games. Miller was the opening day centerfielder and hit .231 with 13 stolen bases, 16 runs and seven doubles. Brantley batted .273 and Pepe .176 in limited action.

Higgins Ascends Career Hits List - Higgins recently moved into 22nd place on the all-time Wagner hits list as the slick-fielding infielder cur- rently has 139 base knocks.
