Bolt Among Top Athletes Vying for World Athletics Award, Caster Makes Home List Bolt among top athletes vying for world athletics award, Caster makes home list The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) announced the nominees for the World Athlete of the Year last week. The shortlist for the men includes the Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt, US 110m hurdler Aries Merritt and Kenyan 800m champion David Rudisha. The women’s section comprises of Paris - British heptathlete Jessica Ennis, New Zealand shot-putter Valerie Adams and US sprinter Allyson Felix. All three athletes won gold medals at the London Olympics. Votes for the nominees were cast from a panel of 2 400 people around the world consisting of IAAF officials, top athletes and selected members of the international press. The winners for the 2012 World Athlete of the Year Awards will be announced on November 24 at a ceremony in Barcelona. On home soil, South Africa's 2012 Sportswoman of the Year, Caster Semenya, has been nominated for the Athlete of the Year accolade at the annual Gsport Awards. The Gsport awards recognise the performances of sportswomen and coaches of women's sports teams. The Olympic silver medallist in the 800m event has been nominated alongside Olympic canoeing bronze medallist Bridgitte Hartley and national women's hockey captain Marsha Marescia. Over 100 nominations were received across the various categories in a month-long public nominations process. Free public voting began on Wednesday, November 7 on the Gsport website. The Gsport awards ceremony will take place in Johannesburg on November 20. Former high jump world champion Jacques Freitag was arrested on Friday morning and spent the weekend in police custody according to the Beeld newspaper. Freitag was stopped by Tshwane police after he ran a red traffic light in Bronkhorstspruit and was allegedly found in possession of the drug Cat (methcathinone) in his pocket. Freitag won gold at the World Athletics Championships in Paris, France in 2003. Freitag belongs to an elite class of only eight athletes to win world championships at youth, junior and senior level for an athletic event. Since then, he seems to be on the spot light for the wrong reasons. Freitag was also arrested in 2006 along with his gym partner Zeegfriedt Veenemans after a fight broke out between them and a 17-year-old pupil. A charge of assault against them was dropped after attending a diversion programme. The Kolonade Retail Park Half Marathon & 10 km race will take place on Saturday 15 November. This is a flat, fast and easy run but be sure to get there early as this is an AGN league race and the start last year had a bottle neck effect due to the big turnout. The race will take place at the Kolonade Retail Park Shopping Centre on Zambezi Drive in Montana. In The News Healthy after kidney transplant, Aries Merritt returns to world championships and finishes second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles. SACRAMENTO, California. — Aries Merritt will be making a return to the world championships. This time, with a working kidney. The world-record holder Merritt finished second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles at the U.S. track and field championships Sunday. His place — as long as it was top three — didn’t really matter. He just wanted a spot. Harris proved uncatchable as he finished in 13.24 seconds. Merritt was 0.07 seconds behind. Merritt won bronze at the 2015 world championships in Beijing with his kidneys barely functioning because of a genetic disorder. He received the transplant from his sister less than a week later. Now healthy, he’s ready to see what he can do with worlds being held at the venue where he won an Olympic gold medal during the 2012 London Games. “I always felt once I was healthy, all it would take is for me to put in the work,” Merritt ex- plained. “That’s something I’ve been lacking. I haven’t been able to put in the work in two years.” Merritt, 31, said he knew he would make a strong return, although he encountered many scep- tics.

IAAF Diamond League Media Information Guide 2013 www.diamondleague.com 1/37 INTRODUCTION With the creation of the IAAF Diamond League we set out to reinvent the one-day meeting structure of our sport, to bring clarity to the top tier circuit of international invitational competition which takes place outside the IAAF World Championships and Olympic Games. While there remain many challenges ahead if we are to make further advances and cement the IAAF Diamond League’s position as one of the world’s major sports series, we firmly believe that we have made an exceptionally good start in the first three years of the new competition structure. The IAAF Diamond League has a worldwide audience and a broadcasting reach undreamt by the Golden League series which preceded it. Thanks to a 14 meeting circuit which covers Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, a competition programme that includes virtually the full spectrum of Olympic track and field disciplines, the guarantee of the world’s greatest athletes battling to win 8 Million Dollars in prize money, accumulating points season long to win their event’s Diamond Race Trophy, the IAAF Diamond League has captured the public’s imagination like no other non-championship athletics competition. I eagerly look forward to the 2013 season of the IAAF Diamond League which commences in Doha and concludes at the end of August and beginning of September with the finals in Zurich and Brussels. Ovidius University Annals, Series Physical Education and Sport / SCIENCE, MOVEMENT AND HEALTH Vol. XII, ISSUE 2 Supplement 2012, Romania The journal is indexed in: Ebsco, SPORTDiscus, INDEX COPERNICUS JOURNAL MASTER LIST, DOAJ DIRECTORY OF OPEN ACCES JOURNALS, Caby, Gale Cengace Learning STUDY ON HIGH JUMPERS ON THE WORD GHEORGHE DANIEL1 Abstract Purpose. This work has proposed that purpose, to separate the essential data for selection and training high performance athletes in the perspective of major international competition. Methods. As research methods I used the case study, observation and statistics. Results. For the final selection to the Olympics, to accede to one of the medals, the athlete’s performance should be over 2.30 m. If we have several athletes with special performances, we should focus primarily on those with a richer experience, with several international competitions, so a little older. Conclusions. In 2 of the 5 Olympics, the performance for the first place is equal to the average top, which confirms first hypothesis. The top average age is 24 years and 7 months which confirms the second hypothesis. The third hypothesis is confirmed with the observation that for the Olympics the performance is the supreme criterion, the height isn’t a decisive criterion (there are medalists with height below top average). The hypothesis of the athlete’s weight isn’t confirmed, recording an average of 77,36 kg. We only have significant correlation between athlete’s height and weight. Key words: athletes, performance, statistics. Introduction the essential data for selection and training high The present study is an analysis of the finalists performance athletes in the perspective of major from the last two Olympics and the first three of the international competition.
