Media accreditation 3 IAAF DiaMOND LEAGUE MEdia GUidE INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2019 season of the IAAF Diamond League. Now in its 10th year, the 2019 series will be the first that will conclude just weeks before a global championships. Athletes earn points in the first 12 meetings to qualify for two finals. As part of the overall US$8million in prize money available across the series, the finals offer a prize purse of US$3.2 million. $100,000 is at stake in each of the 32 Diamond disciplines, including $50,000 for each winner along with a stunning Diamond Trophy and a wildcard entry to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. In 2018, 360 million viewers from across 161 countries spanning all six continents worldwide watched the world’s top athletes compete in the IAAF Diamond League, an increase of about 78 million on the previous year. Further emphasising the IAAF Diamond League’s global credentials, athletes from 83 different countries took part in the 2018 season, with 34 of them producing winners across the series. The 2019 IAAF Diamond League – which takes place in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America – will set the scene for the world’s third-largest sporting event. Sebastian Coe IAAF President and chairman of the Board of Diamond League AG 4 How it works | IAAF DiaMOND LEAGUE MEdia GUidE HOW IT WORKS The IAAF Diamond League comprises 14 of the best invitational track and field meetings in the world. The meetings are spread across Asia, Europe, Africa and North America, and compose the top tier of the IAAF’s global one-day meeting competition structure. This series, which began in 2010, showcases 32 event disciplines which are carefully distributed among the 14 meetings. In each of the 32 Diamond disciplines, athletes will compete for points throughout the season in a bid to qualify for the final. After the first 12 meetings, the athletes with the most points will earn a spot in one of the two IAAF Diamond League finals. Winners of each discipline in the finals will become the Diamond League champions, securing a US$50,000 cash prize, a spectacular Diamond Trophy and a wild card entry to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. 5 How it works | IAAF DiaMOND LEAGUE MEdia GUidE Points Prize money Points per event discipline at the first 12 qualification meetings: At each of the 12 qualification meetings, all disciplines have the same prize money: 1st – 8 points 5th – 4 points 2nd – 7 points 6th – 3 points 1st – US$10,000 5th – US$2500 3rd – 6 points 7th – 2 points 2nd – US$6000 6th – US$2000 4th – 5 points 8th – 1 point 3rd – US$4000 7th – US$1500 4th – US$3000 8th – US$1000 The top eight or 12 athletes (depending on the discipline) with the plus rewards for 9th-12th place finishers in distance races and most points after the first 12 meetings will be invited to compete ninth-lane runners in sprints. at the IAAF Diamond League finals in Zurich and Brussels. SACRAMENTO, California. — Aries Merritt will be making a return to the world championships. This time, with a working kidney. The world-record holder Merritt finished second behind Aleec Harris in the 110-meter hurdles at the U.S. track and field championships Sunday. His place — as long as it was top three — didn’t really matter. He just wanted a spot. Harris proved uncatchable as he finished in 13.24 seconds. Merritt was 0.07 seconds behind. Merritt won bronze at the 2015 world championships in Beijing with his kidneys barely functioning because of a genetic disorder. He received the transplant from his sister less than a week later. Now healthy, he’s ready to see what he can do with worlds being held at the venue where he won an Olympic gold medal during the 2012 London Games. “I always felt once I was healthy, all it would take is for me to put in the work,” Merritt ex- plained. “That’s something I’ve been lacking. I haven’t been able to put in the work in two years.” Merritt, 31, said he knew he would make a strong return, although he encountered many scep- tics.

    Sports News Roundup July 09 Marabana-2015 A total of 431 runners from the United States are registered to compete in the next edition of Marabana, which is a record figure, announced Carlos Gattorno, general director of the famous Cuban marathon project. This unprecedented participation highlights among the new characteristics of the 1st edition of a Marabana after the re-establishment of relations between Havana and Washington, originally set on December 17th, 2014. Although the figure could rise, 431 U.S. athletes and 16 Puerto Rican already formalized their on-line registration by paying the appropriate fee, said Gattorno. In addition to the current political situation, the U.S. presence is authorized by 1 of the 12 licenses provided by Washington for its nationals to travel to Cuba. Marabana-2015 is scheduled for the 3rd Sunday of November and for the 1st time this year requires participants' qualification. According to Gattorno, the 2,300 runners who completed the race last year are automatically qualified, and the rest will do so in individual races on July 18th and August 13th. This marathon celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Havana and the Day of Physical Culture and Sports in Cuba, and has replicas across the country by Maracuba project. The competition-divided in marathon, half marathon and 10 km.-calls from runners and conventional walkers to elite athletes, veterans and physically unable people. Cuban School Games Organization Highlighted Karina Guevara, representative of the Venezuelan Sports Ministry, highlighted the quality and organization of the Cuban School Sports Games, the base of the high performance sports competition events in Cuba.
