Notes for Charles Alexander Manning: Inquirer and Commercial News (, WA : 1855 - 1901), Wednesday 3 February 1869, page 3 DEATH OF MR. MANNING.-It is with very deep regret that we have to announce the demise of Mr. C. A. Manning, which took place somewhat unexpectedly at his residence at Fremantle on Monday afternoon. Mr Manning arrived in the colony in the year 1854, from which time till his decease he has been uninterruptedly engaged in the shipping interest at the Port. He had also for some years acted as Consular Agent for France. Mr. Manning's zeal and activity in business, his gentlemanly demeanour and thorough integrity of purpose in promoting all that was good for his fellow-colonists and the welfare of his adopted country, were traits in his character so prominent that time itself cannot serve to efface them from the minds of all with whom he came in contact. Mr. Manning, in common with all men, had his failings, but his good deeds far outweighed them; and he has passed from amongst us honoured, respected, and regretted by all classes of the community.

Western Mail (Perth, WA : 1885 - 1954), Thursday 1 June 1933, page 7 PIONEERS' GRAVES. A Fremantle Relic. Lying in the shelter of a hill which overlooks the bay where the ships of the State's first settlers sought anchorage, a dilapidated but unforgettable relic of the days when Western Australia was a struggling colony, the old Fremantle Cemetery in Skinner-street Fremantle's oldest existing graveyard will soon exist only in memory, as do the pioneers whose material remains it holds. Under a joint arrangement between the Fremantle City Council and the Fremantle Cemetery Board, it is proposed to exhume the remains of those buried there and transfer them to graves in the new cemetery. This done, a park and children's playground will be built on the site and so will disappear yet another of the many landmarks which have symbolised one aspect or other of the history of the State during its 100 years' existence. <> An imposing head-stone, surrounded by massive iron railings denotes the last resting place of Charles Alexander Manning, wealthy landowner and enthusiastic townsman, who died on February 1, 1869. He came to this State from the West Indies, bringing with him considerable wealth and later becoming, history tells us, "the largest landowner in the town." He had no inclination to politics, but devoted himself to affairs municipal. He was the originator of the volunteer movement in Fremantle and, among other offices, he had the distinction of being the "first Grand Master of Freemasonry in the colony." An enthusiastic astronomer, he built an observation tower on Manning Hill.

Notes for Henrietta Joaquina Manning: Eastern Districts Chronicle (York, WA : 1877 - 1927), Saturday 20 October 1894, page 6 Death of Mrs. J. H. Monger. It is with extreme regret we find it our duty to chronicle the death of Mrs J. H. Monger, at Faversham House, York, which sad event took place at her residence on Sunday afternoon last. The deceased had been a great sufferer for many months past, and with the (Exception of a few brief intervals was for so the weeks confined to her room. The deceased lady was highly esteemed by those included within the circle of her acquaintance, and very general regret at her death was expressed on all sides. The cause of death was cancer. Mrs. Monger leaves behind a family of seven-three sons and four daughters, to whom much sympathy is extended in their bereavement. On Monday morning, before proceeding to the Railway Station, a short service was conducted at Faversham House by the Rev. Fry, and among the large number present were many leading residents of the town and district. At the conclusion of the service the corpse was conveyed to the Station in a hearse, Which was literally smothered with wreaths sent by various friends of the deceased. The pall-bearers were the Resident Magistrate (Mr. F. A. Hare), Mr. F. Craig, Mr. E. Doucon, and Mr. J. Johnston, the chief mourners being: Mr. F. C. Monger, M.L A., and Mr. A. J. Monger. Upon arrival at the Station the coffin was placed in a truck draped With black, and conveyed to the; Metropolis by the mail-train for interment in the Wesleyan Cemetery. The remains of the late Mrs. J. H. Monger (says the Daily News of Tuesday) were brought to Perth from York yesterday morning. In the afternoon, at 3 o'clock, an impressive funeral service was held at Wesley Church. The pulpit, chancel, and communion table had been draped black by Mrs. Howe, and lillies and other beautiful white flowers relieved the sombre shade. The coffin was taken into Church amidst the solemn tolling of the bell, and the strains of the "Dead March " from " Saul," which was played by Mr. Ernest Crome, the organist of the Church. The precession down the aisle was, headed by the Revs. T. Bird and A. S. J, Fry, the former reading the service for the dead. Following the coffin were relatives and friends of the deceased lady. The Revs. T. Bird, A. S. J. Fry, W.A. Potts and A. J. Barclay took part in the service, which was a very impressive one. Mr. Bird delivered a short address. He said troubles had come thick and fast upon the family of the deceased, for the news of the death of her daughter's husband was received almost at the time she herself passed away. How feeble were their words of comfort to express the deep sense of sorrow at their double, bereavement, but they realised that God was able to speak words of comfort to the sorrow-stricken. It was not an earthly voice, but a voice from heaven -which said

Page 5 of 23 Friday, March 20, 2020 7:46:20 AM Generation 2 (cont.) “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labours and their works follow them." It was pleasing to form a recollection of the sufferer's perfect trust in her Redeemer, and of the comforting hope of a future state of happiness which | cheered her, of her love of all things noble, kind and true, of her uncompromising condemnation of anything approaching sham, and her earnest sincerity and purity of motive that was only equalled by her appreciation of all, that was Christlike and unselfish. They called to recollection her love of the services of God's house, and her appreciation of the opportunities afforded tor the cultivation of the spirit of Christ; and it was for them, remembering this, to earnestly pray to the God of all Providence that their eyes might be opened, and that they might be sanctified in His service, and that hereafter they might meet those who had gone before. Two most beautiful hymns were sung, the service closing with prayer by Mr. Fry. The coffin covered with beautiful flowers, both loose and in wreaths, was then conveyed to the hearse by the pall-bearers, and the solemn cortege moved to the cemetery. The chief mourners were Mrs. Frank Monger, Mrs. Hope, and Mrs. Moorhead, daughters of the deceased lady , Messrs Fred O. Monger, M.L.A., and A. J. Monger, sons; Dr. Hope and sons, and Mr. F. W. Moorhead. Gathered around the grave were noticed the Premier (Sir John Forrest, K G.M.G.), Hon. Sir George Shenton, M.L.C., Hon. W. E. Marmion, M.L A , Hon. R. W. Hardey, M.L.C., Hon. E. H. Glyde junr., R. Fairbairn, R.M., E. Sholl, C. Y. O'Connor, A. W. Hassell, W. Strickland, W. A. Gale, C. Steere, and E. K. Courthope. The service was read by the Revs. T. Bird and A. S. J, Fry, the scene at the grave being of a most affecting and impressive character. The wreaths and flowers placed on the coffin were very beautiful, and were sent by the following:-Sir John and Lady Forrest, Sir. Geo. and Lady; Shenton, Lady Campbell and the Misses Campbell, the Hon. S H. and Mrs. Parker, Rev, T. Bird, Mesdames A. Forrest, Hart, Money, G. E. Rowe, F. A. Stone, Geo. Notes for John Henry Monger: West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Wednesday 24 February 1892, page 5 DEATH OF MR. J. H. MONGER, M.L.C It is with most sincere regret that we record the death of Mr. J. H. Monger, M.L.C. It was only in yesterday's issue that we announced his arrival at his home in York, and the hope was then expressed that, in spite of the severe illness which had wrought so great a change in his usually robust appearance, back again in the town with which his name is so closely identified, his health would recover, and many years of life and usefulness might yet be before him. That wish was, however, not to be fulfilled. Mr. Monger returned to his home just in time to breathe his last in an atmosphere and amid scenes which had been familiar to him for the last thirty years. The final scene occurred at eleven o'clock yesterday morning, and in his own home, and sur-rounded by all the members of his family, John Henry Monger, one of the most notable of our native born colonists, peacefully passed to his rest. Our York correspondent telegraphs that the news of his death was received with deep and sincere grief throughout the town and district, and needless to say the same feelings were in the ascendent in Perth when the mournful tidings reached tha capital. The announcement has been received with unreserved expressions of regret and sym-pathy, regret at the loss of such a tried and valued colonist, and sympathy with his family. The deceased gentleman has been ailing in health for some months past and it was with the object of benefiting bis health that he went to the Eastern Colonies. His condition, however, did not improve and although at times the hopes of his friends were raised by some favourable bulletin, the next would an-nounce a change for the worse. Under these circumstances it was considered advisable that he should return to Western Australia. He returned to this colony by the mail steamer from

Page 6 of 23 Friday, March 20, 2020 7:46:20 AM Generation 2 (cont.) that he should return to Western Australia. He returned to this colony by the mail steamer from Adelaide which arrived at Albany last Saturday, and he journeyed to York from Albany by special tram on Sunday. With the most careful attention, however, he failed to make any advancement towards recovery, and yesterday, as already said, he breathed his last. John Henry Monger was the son of one of the first of our pioneer colonists. Over sixty years ago his father, who was a sawyer, used to work in the vicinity of what is now known as Monger's Lake, near Subiaco. It was here that John Henry Monger first saw the light of day. He was one of the first Europeans born in this colony. In his early days his father went to the Eastern districts, which were discovered just about that time. It was he that founded the present town of York, where be established the first house of business. For about twenty prosperous years he carried on business here, and when he died he left four sons and one daughter to mourn their loss. John Henry Monger was the eldest son, and had a few years previous to his father's death, taken over the mercantile business in York. Since this time he has continued to reside in York, and has built up for himself a large and successful business. Of late years he went in largely for agricul-ture, and he was one of the first to introduce ring-barking, and by this means, largely in-creased the carrying capacity of the York country. He was also a very successful breeder of stock, and his success in this direction, is principally attributable to the enterprise he showed in importing first class stock for breeding purposes. During the last year or two ho has exhibited largely at the agricultural shows, and has carried off a large number of prizes. As a public man also he has filled positions with credit to himself and advantage to his country. He had been Chairman of the York Municipality, and President of the Agricultural Society. He was also a Justice of the Peace, and was an original member of the first Legislative Council under Responsible Government. In the neighbourhood of York John Henry Monger leaves a host of friends in all classes of the community, and many farmers and settlers will remember with feelings of grati-tude the helping hand extended to them in their early struggles, and will miss his kind and genial words as well as his useful and valuable advice. The deceased gentleman leaves a wife and family of four sons and four daughters, and two brothers-Messrs. Stephen and George Monger-who were present at his death bed. As he expressed a wish to be buried in Perth. by the side of his father and mother, the remains will be brought down by train to-day, and the funeral will leave the residence of the Hon. E.T. Hooley, M.L.C., at 4.30 o'clock this afternoon. As a mark of respect to the deceased, the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon im-mediately after meeting adjourned its sitting. The Colonial Secretary, in moving the adjourn-ment, referred in sincere terms of regret at the loss which the country had sustained by the death of Mr. Monger, whose name, be said, was a household word in West Australia.

Notes for Alfred Joseph Bessell-Browne: Bessell-Browne, Alfred Joseph (1877-1947) by Merrilyn Lincoln This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 7, (MUP), 1979

Alfred Joseph Bessell-Browne (1877-1947), soldier and businessman, was born on 3 September 1877 at Auckland, New Zealand, son of William Henry Brown (Bessell-Browne), insurance inspector, and his wife Harriott Maria Searle, née Linton. The family migrated to New South Wales in the mid-1880s and Alfred became a pupil at Camden Grammar School. They later moved to Western Australia and, after attending Perth High School, Alfred joined the Patents' Office as a clerk in 1896. That year he enlisted in the Perth Artillery Volunteers and by 1899 was a sergeant.

When the South African War broke out, Bessell-Browne enlisted in the 1st Western Australian (Mounted Infantry) Contingent as a private. His unit reached Cape Town in November 1899, served with the Kimberley Relief Force and in operations in the Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony. Having been promoted through all the ranks Bessell-Browne was commissioned lieutenant on 22 April 1900. He returned home with the contingent in March 1901 but immediately re-enlisted in the 5th Western Australian Contingent, serving as adjutant, then second-in-command. He was promoted captain in June, was mentioned in dispatches in July and received the Distinguished Service Order. On returning to Perth in April 1902 he resumed his public service career and on 12 May next year married Muriel Maud Manning at St George's Cathedral. He rejoined the Australian Field Artillery as lieutenant, was promoted captain in 1908, and in 1909 attended a course in military science at the University of Sydney. That year he resigned from the public service and went into business as a wholesale merchant.

Bessell-Browne was major commanding the 37th Battery, A.F.A., when World War I began. Appointed major in the Australian Imperial Force on 18 August 1914, he was given command of the 8th Battery, and left for Egypt in November. His unit was at Gallipoli during the landing but, because of the difficulty of positioning field-guns in the rugged terrain, its artillery was not brought ashore until 4 May 1915; 400 infantrymen hauled two guns on drag-ropes up precipitous slopes to the crest of Plateau 400. Until August Bessell-Browne commanded this battery, which bombarded Turkish lines at Lone Pine; from then until the evacuation he commanded the 2nd and 3rd A.F.A. brigades in turn. His final task on Gallipoli was to destroy guns which could not be taken out. That year he had been appointed C.M.G. and mentioned in dispatches.

In March 1916 Bessell-Browne, a lieutenant-colonel since 1 January, left for the Western Front. His 2nd A.F.A. Brigade was posted to the Somme and in July provided part of the covering barrage for the attack on Pozières-one of the earliest creeping barrages. In September he was made temporary commander of the 1st Divisional Artillery which served at Flers in the winter of 1916-17. Promoted colonel and temporary brigadier general in January 1917, he was in charge of the 5th Divisional Artillery until the end of the war and in this period emerged as an outstanding commander, constantly showing his capacity for solving difficult problems of technique and command. At Polygon Wood he sent three batteries to cover the Australians' exposed right flank: this was probably the first time that defence of a flank by artillery had been attempted in a trench-warfare attack. With the transition to mobile warfare after Villers-Bretonneux in 1918, he quickly adapted tactics to give close support to the advancing infantry during the attacks on the

Page 11 of 23 Friday, March 20, 2020 7:46:20 AM Generation 3 (cont.) quickly adapted tactics to give close support to the advancing infantry during the attacks on the support systems of the Hindenburg Line and the final penetration at Bellicourt. Here, in its finest performance during the war, the 5th's artillery put down a creeping barrage at an angle of ninety degrees from the line of sight to cover an attack at Le Catelet. In October Bessell-Browne supported the 30th American Division in the Selle River sector and received the American Distinguished Service Medal. He was appointed C.B. for his services in France and Flanders and was mentioned in dispatches nine times.

Demobilized in July 1919, he resumed work as a merchant. By 1921 he had established an indent agents' firm, Bessell-Browne Ltd, in Perth, and remained its managing director until his death. He served with the Australian Military Forces as a colonel until World War II, when he commanded the Western Australian Volunteer Defence Corps, and retired as brigadier general in 1942. Survived by his wife, three daughters and four of their five sons, he died of cancer on 3 August 1947 and was cremated with full military honours.

Bessell Avenue, for example, was named in honour of WWI and WWII soldier Brigadier General Alfred Joseph Bessell-Browne. He was born in Auckland, and later moved to Perth where he attended Perth High School.

Relationship Notes for Alfred Joseph Bessell-Browne and Muriel Maud Manning: Western Mail (Perth, WA : 1885 - 1954), Saturday 16 May 1903, page 41 BESSELL-BROWNE-MANNING A quiet but pretty wedding was solemnised in St. George's Cathedral on Tuesday afternoon, between Captain A. J. Bessell-Browne, D.S.O., and Miss Muriel Maud Manning. The church was charmingly decorated; with a multitude of white chrysanthemums, blossoms intertwined with ferns and bamboo foliage. A wedding-bell of white flowers drooped over the chancel steps, suspended by triple cords of white ribbon, and bamboos formed a feathery arch for the bridal party to pass under. The ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Perth, assisted by Dean Gold-smith. The bride, who was given away by-her brother, Mr. C. H. E. Manning, looked very sweet in a dress of creamy tinted surah silk. The trained skirt was arranged with curved horizontal tuckings and fine silk lace insertion, the lat- ter trimming heading and outlining several small shaped flounces. The corsage had a deep collar, and was entirely ornamented with briar stitching, while the transparent yoke was of lace, and a necklet of pearls was worn. A bridal veil of white tulle fell over a coronet of orange blossoms.. Almost immediately as the wedding party reached the altar steps, the sun sent slanting rays of light which outlined the. figure of the young bride as she stood there, and suggested a message of bright and happy omen. The little bridesmaids in attendance were Miss Irene Manning, sister ol the bride, and Miss Daisy Browne, cousin of the bride groom. Their dainty dresses were of cream nun's veiling, tucked, and with cream lace and little gold buttons, and having belts of cream satin. Their hats were of white felt, lined with folded chiffon, and trimmed with cream ros-ettes of satin, and a large white ostrich feather. They carried baskets of pink roses and autumn leaves. Mr. Edwin Browne acted as best man. After tue ceremony the guests proceeded to the residence of Mrs. Manning, the bride's mother, in St. George's-terrace, where a reception was held. The wed-ding breakfast was arranged on a pretty white flower-decked table, overhung by a flowery wedding-bell, from which issued streamers of white ribbon to train amid the flowers below it. The usual toasts were honoured. Later in the afternoon Capt. and Mrs. Bessell-Browne drove away amid a soft rain of chrysanthemum petals, Mrs. Bessell-Browne wearing a stylish dress of grey cloth, the tout ensemble being arranged in the horizontal folds edged with black velvet. The coatee opened to reveal a vest of white satin, veiled with cream guipure lace, and a grey velvet toque, swathed with cream lace, caught by a steel ornament, pret-tily completed the costume. The following is a list of the presents:-Mr. H. Strickland, sen., cheque, pair of silver candlesticks and half a dozen fish knives and forks ; Mrs. H. Strickland, cheque and silver teapot; Mrs. H. E.
