    commercial spaces like theaters, and to performances spanning the gamut from the solemn, to the joyous. This diversity encompassed celebrations outside the expected calendar of national days. Patriotic sentiment was even a key feature of events celebrating the economic and commercial expansion of the new nation. The commemorative celebration for the laying of the foundation-stone of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the “great national work which is intended and calculated to cement more strongly the union of the Eastern and the Western States,” took place on July 4, 1828.1 It beautifully illustrated the musical ties that bound different spaces together – in this case a parade route, a temporary outdoor civic space, and the permanent space of the Holliday Street Theatre. Organizers chose July Fourth for the event, wishing to signal civic pride and affective patriotism. Baltimore filled with visitors in the days before the celebration, so that on the morning of the Fourth the “immense throng of spectators…filled every window in Baltimore-street, and the pavement below….fifty thousand spectators, at least, must have been present.” The parade was massive and incorporated a great diversity of groups, including “bands of music, trades, and other bodies.” One focal point was a huge model, “completely rigged,” of a naval vessel, the “Union,” complete with uniformed sailors. Bands playing patriotic tunes were interspersed amongst the nationalist imagery on display: militia uniforms, banners emblazoned with patriotic verse, national flags, eagle figures, shields, and more. Charles Carrollton, one of the last surviving signers of the Declaration of Independence, gave the main public address at the site, accompanied by a march composed for the occasion, the “Carrollton March” (see Figure 2.4).

The government played an active part in the development of the EU’s FLEGT Action Plan and has subsequently been supporting the negotiation and implementation of voluntary partnership agreements with producer countries. The government has also been providing a significant amount of funding, through the Forest Governance, Markets and Trade Programme, to initiatives aimed at tackling the trade in illegal timber and improving forest governance. The private sector in the UK has also been proactive, as reflected in the increase in the number of companies with chain-of-custody certification and in the amount of certified wood-based products on the UK market. A high level of media coverage of illegal logging also indicates that there is widespread awareness of this issue. This response is thought to be partly responsible for the decline in imports into the UK of timber-sector products likely to be illegal, currently estimated to comprise three per cent of the total.

    Lauren Rosewarne: The Croning of Camilla The Croning of Camilla: a Sexual Political Analysis of Media Criticism of Camilla Parker Bowles Lauren Rosewarne Department of Political Science, Centre for Public Policy University of Melbourne Refereed paper presented to the Australasian Political Science Association Conference Page 1 Lauren Rosewarne: The Croning of Camilla Abstract In early 2005, Camilla Parker Bowles (CPB) married heir to the throne of England, Prince Charles. Since her long affair with Charles became public, CPB has been exposed to extensive media criticism that has continued through to her recent marriage. This paper proposes that while there are numerous potential reasons explaining this media contempt towards CPB, that a feminist analysis of the coverage would claim that negative commentary is based on the construction and perpetuation of her image as an unattractive older woman: i.e., a crone. This paper examines the construction of the crone in media and popular culture, using CPB Parker Bowles as a case study. This paper contends that media criticism of CPB is primarily shaped by her non compliance with contemporary understandings of ‘beautiful’, which are perpetually defined by youth and femininity. Charles’ previous wife, Diana, provides a nice contrast to CPB, in that while Diana’s personal indiscretions were as morally egregious as CPB’s, Diana’s beauty somehow exonerated her from the levels of condemnation CPB has been subject to. The event was opened by Sir Peter Soulsby, M.P. of the constituency the school is situated in, Leicester South and a chess player in his youth. During his opening address, he praised the ECF for the Chess For Schools Project, of which he was fully aware and expressed his pleasure at being asked to open the event. The Counties Championship trophies were on display, and the Open Trophy caught his eye as a fine piece of silver ware.
