July/August 2007 Queen's Cup 2007-Where was the Wind? byDaveWehnes A sunny sky and comfortable temperatures greeted over 200 boats on the starting line for the 69th Queen's Cup Race. The line was set between the / Igreen bell buoy and Milwaukee's tall ship, the schooner Denis Sullivan. Unfortunately, the wind that had generated 8-ft. waves the day before continued to fade away as the start time for the race approached. The boats are divided into sections based upon their PHRF handicaps. Different sections have different start times, arranged so that about 40 boats start every ten minutes. The slower boats start first. The drifting conditions generated quite a bit of chaos in the starting area when boats were unable to sail off after their start. The area became more and more crowded with each subsequent starting gun. The more crowded it became; the more the wind was disturbed. The largest boats, by virtue of COMPASS their tall masts, were able to obtain a bit of clear air aloft and sail away from the fleet.
