How can we continue to improve

is there a future for CLIFFS? Is there a future for CLIFFS ?

• What are our achievements?

• What do we still need to do? Key questions that inspired CCCLCLLLIIIIFFFFFFSSS

• Will climate change predicted for the UK influence the mechanism and frequency of slope failures?

• Do stakeholders need to take any action?

• If they do, what is required and when? Achievements - what did we promise?

• EPSRC-funded ‘dating service’ for academics, R&D agencies, stakeholders, consultants and climate specialists to address issues related to Climate Impact Forecasting For Slopes

• To stimulate an integrated research response to address the intricately linked problem of forecasting, monitoring, design, management and remediation of climate change induced variations in slope instability Achievements - what did we do?

+ more than 150 members w: cliffs.lboro.ac.uk e: [email protected] Achievements – meetings

Inception meeting – April 2005

Public Launch meeting, UKCIP/HC consultation - Oct 2005

4 multi-disciplinary themed workshops • risk and uncertainty • responses of constructed slopes to changes in climate • responses of natural slopes to changes in climate • mitigation, remediation and dissemination

Still to come: symposium (spring 2008) Achievements – start up

Inception – April 2005 • To kick-start the activities of the CLIFFS network

• Held at

Public launch meeting – October 2005 • The launch meeting joined up with one of the first public consultation sessions on the next package of climate change information (“UKCIPnext”).

• Held at Loughborough University Achievements – workshops

Workshop 1 • use of climate change information in slope stability assessments, • validation of groundwater models incorporating climate forecast scenarios.

• Held at Holywell Park, Loughborough Achievements – workshops

Workshop 2 • the effects of climate change on natural slopes • field visits to Hadleigh Castle and the Sevenoaks by-pass

• Held at Dorich House, Kingston University (with Maia Ibsen and Eddie Bromhead) Achievements – workshops

Workshop 3 • the impact of climate change on the magnitude and frequency of cutting and embankment slope failures • numerical modelling, physical modelling and monitoring and testing • field visit to the BIONICS embankment

• Held at , Devonshire Building – joining up with BIONICS progress meeting Achievements – workshops

Workshop 4 • monitoring and data management • remediation and design • decision making and dissemination

2020 Still to come –Symposium, Early 2008

• Focus? – Dissemination conference: UKCIP08, decision-making with uncertainty, slope monitoring and design (constructed and natural slopes), adaptation and remediation techniques, etc.

• International? – Relevant best practice from mainland Europe

• Location? – Loughborough

• Sponsors? Achievements – initial outcomes

• Consensus? Climate change and resultant landscape response

• How will ‘it’ respond? Very uncertain, high complexity requires research at different levels

• What do we need to do? Forge more multi-disciplinary teams to address the issues Achievements – research/dissemination

The CLIFFS membership base is large and varied The workshops have shown the opportunities for synergy It has been used successfully to spread the message…

• CLIFFS materials used in briefing papers for Stern Report • Input into BKCC/SKCC meetings and workshops • Supporting grant applications (CLIFFS link has been used by of Newcastle, Queen’s Belfast, Southampton ,Leeds and Loughborough) • Invitation to speak at Slope Engineering 2007 (This Thursday, jointly with Alex Kidd, HA)

There is a great need to continue this process and we will provide assistance to anyone who wants it Needs – membership/website

• More members? • Email newsletter? • Links pages? • Partner search facility? • More meetings?

There will be some costs…….. (but not too much) Needs – Members

We already have some 150 members

• Wide range of backgrounds • About 1/3 academics • But, … there are more interested parties out there

• Do we need to be more proactive in our approach?

• Should we charge membership fee? • If yes, what services would you require as a member? Needs – Member services

• Newsletters (email-based)

• Web-based services - what makes a good web-facility? – Partner links – Project pages – Links to guidelines/policies, etc.

• Focal point for contacts

• Meetings

• Others? Needs – Meetings

Meetings on broad themes to find synergies in our diverse communities

In future, meetings could • be driven by research needs • focus on bringing teams together to develop research grants • formulate of appropriate adaptation/mitigation options • deal with more specific aspects, such as: – residual shear strength variability – modelling the impact of fissure flow – long-term monitoring – formalising uptake of outcomes, etc.

Suggestions? Needs – future research

• Identify and agree research priorities

• Feedback to EPSRC

• SKCC already targets BE in special call

• Need to discuss infrastructure/slopes call THE FUTURE

Running of the network thus far on basis on 1day/week – limits possible further development

Initial EPSRC CLIFFS funding runs out in Feb 2008

Further basic income to run current model is available until Spring 2009

Workshop/symposium on ‘Learning from full scale and international best practice’ THE FUTURE

Continuation dependent upon member contributions; options include • membership fees • charges for meetings • corporate sponsorships

To continue on current basis, CLIFFS needs 25k/annum (all inclusive)

To improve services to members we should aim for more……. Many thanks for all your inputs today and your support of the network

I hope to see you all again at the CCCLCLLLIIIIFFFFFFSSSSymposium 2008
