When the Exiles were formed in June 1971, the first newsletter was three type-written pages of A4 sent to members in August of that year. Nigel Dean has reviewed all the issues and the bulk of this 100th issue is given over to Nigel’s wonderful, evocative synthesis of highlights from numbers one to ninety-nine. Ron Lev has cast his mind back to the early days of the Exiles and Outside-edge to tell us of the many characters involved in producing our much-loved publication. Our former Editors, Mark Brunt and Howard Allen, reflect on their involvement and Chris Bell adds his appreciation. Roger Gibbons has written another of his wonderful articles, this time bringing to our attention the splendid GCCC Museum and Learning Centre. Ruth Sharville has produced an ingenious ditty for our amusement and, as ever, Tony Hickey has delivered some of his remarkable photographs to enliven this issue.

RAAP is a high-impact motor vehicle accident demonstration and DVD designed to make students aware of the implications of unsafe road practices. Former Roxby Downs Area School student and MFS fire fighter Troy Clements spoke with current RDAS students about the need to learn responsible driving habits. “We’re working with the local emergency services to raise awareness of the dangers of driving inap- propriately,” Mr Clements told The Monitor. “We want these students to understand the respon- sibilities they have when they get behind the wheel. “Up here, higher speeds with highway driving, live- stock on the roads and fatigue are all a real danger for local drivers.” The RAAP presentation included the mock rescue of ‘victim’ Alison Lane from a vehicle donated by BHP Billiton’s emergency services, which was cut open by local SES and CFS volunteers. He said, “Wow, Daddy. I’m really glad we have a computer class at my school.” “Why is that?” I asked. “Because when I do MY dissertation,” he said, “I’ll probably have to spend a LOT of time at my computer just like you do.” In writing this project I have run the risk of making this image – me hunched over my computer keyboard – an enduring facet of my son’s childhood. At the conclusion of this process, my boy, I will endeavor to replace that image with other, more active and interactive memories. In the meantime, I would like to dedicate this work to my son Scottie, a second- grader now. I also dedicate it to my two other children, both born during the writing of this dissertation: my son Benjie, who passed away in 2010; and my daughter Alivia, who is now thirteen months old.
