12 YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN (NDP) MONTHLY UPDATE By the time this article goes to press, we will hopefully have received feedback from on our First Cut Draft of the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) as well as confirmation on whether we need to undertake a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) – we hope not incidentally!

If the timing then goes according to plan, between the 26th August and 14th September, the NDP Team will make the required amendments to the Master document, refine a few associated submissions and prepare for a 6-week period of Public Consultation. Again, if all things go to plan, the start of the 6-week Neighbourhood Development Plan Public Consultation period will coincide and merge in with our much anticipated Chacewater Energy Day, which takes place in and around the Village Hall from 2.00 to 5.00pm on Saturday 15th September.

15 16 Kernow Microscopical Society The next meeting of the Kernow Microscopical Society will be on Saturday September 15th in the Killifreth room at Chacewater village hall at 1.30pm. Under the microscope. we shall be exploring bees and in particular their legs! If you are interested, do come along. You don't need to have a microscope. Our meetings focus on the practical aspects of microscopy; we try to have workshops, using microscopes and exploring methods of preparing specimen slides to view. Our members include professional microscopists who can assist with queries on instruments and microscopical techniques. In July, various members presented a topic of their choosing. We saw some interesting pollens; a pine pollen which was germinated on wet blotting paper and pollen from a 12ft flower spike of fucrea (giant agave look-alike). We were shown an antique double-bladed scalpel for cutting slices and some very interesting Victorian slides from the collection of a doctor who studied algae. There were also slides of the seabed from soundings taken during the laying of the first transatlantic cable in 1855 and slides from soundings from the Red Sea for the cable joining Britain to India and Australia. We are currently actively searching for new members and would be very happy to welcome you. Have a look at our 2018 events diary at http://kernowmicroscopy.webplus.net to see our meetings for the rest of the year. You can also email us at [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming more of you to our meetings. Tea and biscuits are available too! Pat Woodward Publicity Officer

18 19 STATION ROAD CLEAN UP - MANY THANKS! A huge thanks to Jenny, Jill, David, Paul and Ian from the Station Road area for all their work over the weekend of the 20th to 22nd July that saw them cut back the build-up of foliage and clear around the drains along the roadside verge, just beyond the 40mph sign. A great effort one and all, this has made a huge difference to the area and will hopefully prevent rain waters from passing over the drains in future.

20 21 22 Resignation It is with regret that the Parish Council had to accept the resignation of Jim Holford on Friday evening. Jim has been a very active member of the Chacewater Parish Council since coming to the village, always ready to volunteer or even help out with his tractor if appropriate. He will certainly be missed by his fellow councillors. I for one will miss his contributions and counsel during debates. We all wish him well in his future endeavours and extend to him our grateful thanks for all that he has done. This now leaves the Council with three vacant seats and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to consider joining us, come a long and sit in at one of our meetings and get a feel of what it is all about. Western End of Recreation Ground Regenerated for Community Use

Following a good deal or planning and a few days of hard graft - primarily on the 18th and 19th July - a long awaited project to clear up and regenerate the western end of the Recreation Ground has been given a much- needed boost and will soon become an area for everyone to enjoy. In broad order, the plan was to:

The western end of the Recreation Ground had Remove and dispose suffered from an overgrowth of unwanted foliage of the dense bramble, down the years and needed to be cleared

24 ivy and any other unwanted growth that had basically smothered the area down the years.

Rediscover the old sand pit and turn it into a bed of low maintenance shrubs.

Redefine the area behind the football goalmouth netting to enable the copper beech saplings to grow unhindered.

Introduce some simple but robust seating to the area so that members of the community can sit and either watch the football, take a picnic or just admire the surrounding landscape.

Day One - Dressed and ready to go!

One of the many “spin-off” projects identified through the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) – which in this instance sought to enhance a public green space for community use – none of this would have been achieved without the exceptional efforts of some key individuals from within and outside our community, who need to be thanked: P.T.O.

25 Firstly, Jim Holford (who has sadly since moved away from the village) started us off by flailing the area, which cut the job in half from the get go!

With a bit of heavy machinery at times!

Then there was Danny Konik from the Cormac Solutions Ltd, who pro- vided the Community Tool Trolley and helped dispose of a great deal of green waste.

Nigel Jewel, Brian Charles and Nathan Carter from the football club cleared a large area between the pavilion and store before Simon Blake got in there and broke down wood into more manageable sizes for household use.

Tony Reynolds provided a great deal of the practical sense, industry and light machinery to clear significant swathes of growth down to root level.

Neal and Duncan from Chacewater Garden Centre offered us some top soil for the sand pit and the pallets that Paul Shevlin and Steve Leech then transformed into a robust table, some benches and further compost bins – they did much more.

26 Angie Beckham provided a mini tiller machine to dig up the compacted clay in the sand pit and (with the help from Gill Knill) continued the weeding effort.

The new plantation in the old sand pit Clearing the overgrown area gives it a chance to breathe

Paul Shevlin and Steve ...and look at the end result! Leech get to grips with transforming pallets into benches. Lastly, we received some outstanding help from another most unlikely volunteer source; a dozen or so members of the Highways (HE) team responsible for delivering the future A30 dual carriageway works between the roundabouts from Carland Cross to Chiverton Cross; which will do so much to improve our transport connectivity in the years ahead. Drawn from offices as far as Wales, Exeter and Bristol, senior management and staff came down, quite literally mucked in and experienced a bit of P.T.O. life in our area. Sustained by the odd pasty from the Bakery,

27 their vigour and commitment over 2 days in the baking sun, alongside the local team, had to be seen to be believed. Equally important, friendships were forged that will hopefully be longstanding and hopefully see members of the HE team re-visit a site that has been so transformed by their efforts.

So, what is planned for this area of the Rec now? Well, now we have cleared the area, made good and planted a few shrubs to make the old sand pit - the main feature - we need to keep on top of the weed growth until the await the autumn period in particular. At that point, we will sow what is known as “shade” grass seed along the banks and under the trees, with a view to encouraging its use as a relaxing recreation space.

What can you, the Community do to help? Well, it’s all rather simple really. Sit and enjoy this facility but occasionally consider bringing a pair of gardening gloves and secateurs to keep the ivy and brambles at bay – the compost bins are pretty close by, so you would not need to dispose of anything yourself.

An exhausted team take a well-earned rest at the end of Day 2.

Photos were taken of before and after but not included here. So why not take a stroll to that area to admire the difference for yourself and give thanks to the hard work done by all these volunteers.

30 JENNY''S GARDEN PATCH ~ SEPTEMBER Another month has flown by and Autumn is just around the corner. Hopefully your gardens are still looking good and the food crops are coming in thick and fast. September is a busy month with plenty of jobs that need doing, gathering in your crops, tiding up and new plantings

PLANT OF THE MONTH DAFFODIL

Daffodil, also known as narcissus and jonquil, is a type of flowering plant that belongs to the Amaryllis family. Grown in masses they are a delightful sight, and with colours ranging from white and yellow through to pink, there's a daffodil for every garden. Daffodils are normally available from mid August onward, and are best planted at that time, but planting can be extended right through to end of October. Even if planted in November, they will not disappoint in the following spring. The most important thing when planting daffodils is to plant them at the correct depth. As a basic guide the depth want to be 3 times the length of the bulb e.g. if the bulb is 2 inches, they should be planted at a depth of 6 inches. However, it is better to err on the side of planting more deeply. Planting them more deeply makes it less likely they will dry out.

SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN

■ Buy or make a compost bin to take autumn debris. ■ Plant new perennials. ■ Remove spent summer annuals and replace with spring bedding such as wallflowers and forget-me-nots. ■ Plant spring-flowering bulbs in beds, borders, pots and grass. ■ Plant prepared bulbs for indoor flowering around Christmas ■ Sow hardy annuals, such as marigolds, centaurea and California poppies. ■ Begin moving tender plants into sheltered positions or into the greenhouse or conservatory. ■ Carry out autumn lawn maintenance, including aerating, scarifying, top dressing and feeding. Reseed bare patches, and create new lawn from seed. ■ Plant garlic, winter lettuce, turnips, spring cabbages and autumn onion sets in the vegetable garden. ■ Prune climbing roses when they've finished flowering, removing dead, damaged and diseased stems. ■ Lift and divide congested clumps of herbaceous perennials.. ■ Cut back the canes on summer-fruiting raspberries

Have a great month in your gardens, we might even be lucky and have an Indian Summer. If you would like any further information come along to Chacewater Garden Centre and have a chat with any of the helpful and friendly staff. Jenny Matthews (Manageress)

31 VILLAGE PONDWATCH – AUGUST 2018 The water is still too murky to see much below the surface. Since June, grass snakes have stirred-up sediment while hunting the pond bottom. Early in August a medium- sized grass snake (70 – 80cm) swam out of the shadows and paused to bask in the morning sunlight. Ten minutes later, he swam across to the south shore showing signs of a successful hunt. One third down from head to tail, the body bulged to twice its usual girth for some 10–15 cm as it floated in sunshine with his head resting on a raft of weed. A great silver diving beetle broke the surface, its shiny black back the size of a brazil nut, stirring and shaking the water lily leaves. Water boatmen also continually ripple the surface. As the water clears a little after rainfall, one or two slender water stick insects emerge with beady eyes looking for prey. Yellow fringed water lilies bloom abundantly across the pond. On the bankside the flowers of purple loosestrife and common knapweed also attract a steady stream of carder and red-tailed bumble bees, beetles and hoverflies. Heavy crops of blackberries are swelling and wasps feed on over-ripe fruit. Honey bees, a small copper and blue butterflies frequent yellow heads of ragwort. Different habitats across the Millennium Green give food and shelter to a great variety of wildlife including at least a dozen species of butterfly. When the wind blows, many dragonflies and damselflies take refuge in long grass or up in the trees. On warm

32 and quieter days they return to the pond. Red darters hold stations around the edge and fiercely guard their territory. An Emperor dragonfly brushes them aside to hunt and large southern hawkers lay eggs among the reeds.

34 Roseland House, Chacewater

On Saturday 15th September the Garden and National collection of Lapageria rosea, held here at Roseland House, Chacewater, will be open free of charge between 1pm and 5pm Lapageria rosea is the National flower of Chile and was introduced to Cornwall (and the rest of the UK) by William Lobb in 1848. William Lobb was the gardener at House before he was hired by the Veitch Nursery based in Exeter and tasked with collecting various plants which included both Lapageria and Monkey Puzzle trees. He boarded HM Packet Seagull, which was to set sail from Falmouth on 7 November 1840 bound for Brazil, it seems extraordinary that he then walked across South America to get to Chile His brother Thomas was also a Plant collector for the Veitch Nursery, between the two of them many of our garden plants were because of their collections. 37 Local Government News. Chacewater Dear Reader I suppose that although the work of the Council goes on, August is a time when we all think of holidays and the weather until recently has been brilliant for people to enjoy our wonderful Cornish landscape and beaches as well as all the outdoor activities that it offers. However, for farmers, the shortage of grass has become a very serious issue for the production of milk and also in this part of the county “green vegetables” e.g. cabbage, cauliflowers etc so for the approaching winter these items are bound to become more expensive. Overall it is a good job that we cannot control the weather because no one of us would in the end be happy. Back to Council business in Chacewater. There has been, (I am very glad to say “has been”) electricity problems at the Brookside Flats, both internally and externally with lighting which is both of vision and security not been good. I am glad to day that there issues have now been resolved. Cornwall Council have also agreed that in the future these flats will be offered to people of over 55 years of age, so if any Chacewater person knows of a suitable applicant of that age who requires a home, please get in touch with me (details at the end of this article). The Local Neighbourhood plan team are forging ahead with a local future plan for Chacewater, so please be prepared to give time and support these ideas, as it gives every resident the opportunity to have a say and part in planning what Chacewater should be like in the longer term. There are several planning applications in Chacewater at the moment and two enforcement issues that I am dealing with. To end on a seasonal item, I think any Harvest Festival Service should have a few sheaves of wheat to help decorate a country Church and to that end it gave me pleasure to be able to stop Beatrice’s nephew as he was driving his combine harvester and

38 bind up some sheaves and have delivered them ready for the Parish Church to truly sing “Bring in the sheaves”. Home 01872 273329, Mobile 07962 217 665 or by email [email protected] Yours with kind regards

39 Time to retire! After 40 years of continuous fundraising, raising tens of thousands of pounds, for many projects it's finally time to call it a day. Age (79) and health have caught up with me and on behalf of all my supporters can I personally thank all the Companies, local and national, Businesses, Trusts, Councils, Grant authorities that have over many years given me and my committees the funding and support to carry on, the committee members including myself and secretaries were all voluntary and every penny raised went direct to the project worked on at that particular time. I can't thank them enough for all their support and input. Groups and local organisations helped include Age concern, Shelter box, RNIB, Animal hospital, Mini bus appeal, Children's Hospice S.W., Churches, Chapels, Play Groups, School's clubs. Bands, Choirs, and several individual personal appeals, it gives me great pleasure, seeing the many groups, charities still carrying on today with their good work. ^ To finalise by the end of this financial year 20l8 I would like to complete one or two outstanding projects so any help for one final time with either a donation, made out to ‘Four Lanes Projects’, gift cards, vouchers, tickets, everything, as in the past, will be acknowledged. Mr. Tommy Bray Four Lanes

And Finally …… A reminder that Chacewater Players will be celebrating it’s 40th anniversary season of pantomime. Some original members are still with us. Some of the children in the chorus have children of their own that are now members. A copy of the original programme with cast and backstage is copied opposite. We would like to see members old and new helping us the celebrate so see the events list and articles elsewhere.
