PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • “Nuendo Is Incredibly Intuitive. Everything Makes Complete Sense. I May Have Opened the Manual Three Times Since I Got the Software.”
Many rock producers were slow to embrace digital audio, arguing that heavy guitars and drums are best captured on tape. “Not me!” says Wagener. “I’ve loved digital since the first machines came out in 1982. I’m not a big friend of tape, because it doesn’t give me back exactly what I put on it. Sure, I have lots of analog outboard gear that I’ve collected over the last 35 years, but I like the recording medium to be digital.” Wagener is a recent convert to Steinberg’s Nuendo recording soft - ware. “A Nuendo setup came bundled with my mixing board,” he recounts. “As soon as I was exposed to it, I realized I had to get deeper into it. Now I’ve moved over completely to Nuendo as my main software. I’ve used every recording program at some point, but the design of Nuendo just appeals to me more than any of the others. For one thing, Nuendo is incredibly intuitive. Everything makes complete sense. There is no hidden stuff. I may have opened the manual three times since I got the software. Nuendo looks good, like a real mixer. It’s easy to handle. It sounds great. I love the things you can do with effects, panning, and editing. There are a lot of big people in Nashville using Nuendo as their main plat - form.” “Nuendo is incredibly intuitive. Everything makes complete sense. I may have opened the manual three times since I got the software.” But despite his digital enthusiasm, Wagener’s goal is to capture great music, not fabricate it.

  • Mindcage Members
Mindcage Members: Jeff Hignite – vocals Dietrick Hardwick – guitars Brian Howell – bass Craig Nudo – drums Kinematic Entertainment, in cooperation with AetherWax Records, has recently unleashed the new album from Florida-based progressive metallers MINDCAGE entitled OUR OWN DEVICES. Mixed and pre-mastered by rock legend Michael Wagener (METALLICA, OZZY OSBOURNE, SKID ROW, DOKKEN, RAVEN, MEGADETH), OUR OWN DEVICES is a fantasy storybook set to music. Combining cultural and literary elements of steampunk, dystopian society and futuristic technologies with highly articulate progressive metal music, the album transports the listener to a world broken and needing a hero. That oppressive world is devoid of arts, creativity, light, and ultimately, humanity. But from it springs an enigmatic character, Arabella Vash, who is called to The One Constant, a group of rebels who maintain the history and teachings of the last free society. The core members of MINDCAGE — Dietrick Hardwick (guitar), Brian Howell (bass) and Craig Nudo (drums) — have been connected personally and through music for almost thirty years. The significance of this project, for them, is that a lifelong goal has come to fruition. With the addition of power vocalist Jeff Hignite, the intense and unique synergy of writing and performing became apparent. The band recently debuted OUR OWN DEVICES and the first official video single Mindcage "The Human Race" to the public on at the ProgPower USA XIV festival in Atlanta, Georgia to an ecstatic reception. OUR OWN DEVICES track listing: 01. Cadence March 02. For All Mankind (The Dark Design) 03. Our Own Devices 04. The Human Race 05. At Full Steam 06.

Opinions still vary as to how much (if at all) the sub and center channels are utilized. There are no standards on delivery formats (audio files on hard drives, CD-Rs or DVD-Rs; Genex MO; DA-88 or 98HR tapes; or 8-track 1- or 2-inch analog) or even how the monitor speakers should be set up in the control room (ITU standard or quad equidistant). Surround signal processing and methods differ significantly from stereo with a general consensus emerging: For surround sound mixing, with higher resolution and six channels to play music over, there is less need to process individual tracks or the mix buses like stereo, so everything fits down a 2-channel pipe. As liberating as this might seem, this quantum leap in sonics and mixing options is not without caveats: Each individual track's sound quality; the cohesiveness and detail of the overall mix; reverb and delay setup and use, and the quality assurance of the final encoding process are critical for the best surround sound.
