A Strategic Facilities Plan for basketball in WA is starting to take shape and many of our Senior Domestic 6 Competition Spring Associations will be consulted and workshops conducted in July to inform this plan. Season Preparations are well and under way for the upcoming West Coast Waves season with the release of the draw imminent. Game on for disabled basketballers

Nathan Ball and Geoff Stewart's faces lit up when co-captain Brad Robbins walked into the State Basketball Centre It was the perfect afternoon pick- me-up for the keen sportsmen, who had just played three games of basketball in the Everyone's Game carnival. Mr Ball and Mr Stewart were among 120 people who took part in the carnival yesterday. Organised by Basketball WA and Inclusion WA, the event gave athletes with intellec- tual disabilities from across Perth the chance to get together for a day of fierce com- petition.

Mr Ball, 27, said the best thing about the carnival was that it put a smile on the play- ers' faces.

"It is pretty hard for people with disabilities to get into mainstream competitions," he said. "It's great that they can come down here and show what they have got."

Robbins opted for a coaching role during the last game of the carnival, when the players took on their parents and coaches. He said he was making the most of his break before pre-season training for the Wildcats kicked off.

"There are about three players that are in the Boomers squad so they have been Wildcat Brad Robbins chats with Nathan Ball training, another four or five are playing in the State Basketball League and another and Geoff Stewart at the Everyone's Game three or so are resting up but by July most of the guys will be back on the court," Carnival. SBL Update

The SBL has reached week 16 and there are just four rounds of the regular season left for fans to get out and support their teams.

Both competitions continue to be tight with finals positions still up for grabs and teams in the top eight all jostling forposition and home court advantage come finals time.

In the women’s competition (WSBL) the South West Slammers sit in outright first position with a 14-3 win-loss record and they are also yet to lose a home game!

There are three teams tied in second position (Willetton Tigers, Rockingham Flames & Perth Redbacks) all who have 12-6 records and just behind them is the Kalamunda Eastern Suns who are 11-6 with one game to spare.

Perry Lakes Hawks are the only team in the bottom four who still have a chance of playing finals, they have one game in hand and are just two games out of the top eight. Should they miss the finals it will be just the third time in their 24 year history (1990 and 1992 were the only other years).

The Men’s competition has the Lakeside Lightning and Wanneroo Wolves in tied first position, both with 18-2 records and an 18 game win- ning streak between them (Wanneroo are on 12 wins and Lakeside on 6 wins).

The Cockburn Cougars have built a buffer in third with a 15-6 record, behind them are the Mandurah Magic (13-7), Perth Redbacks (12-9) and East Perth Eagles (12-9).

The Perry Lakes Hawks (10-10) and Willetton Tigers (10-11) are both holding off challenged from the Goldfields Giants (9-12) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (8-12) who both sit just outside the top eight.

In week 15 both Geraldton Buccaneers (7-14) and Stirling Senators (7-14) lost crucial games to all but end their play-off aspirations, these teams will now have to rely on other results going heavily in their favour as we head towards the finish line in another thrilling competition.

Junior Development Carnival

Basketball WA recently held the second Junior Development Carnival (JDC) for the 2012 WABL season with a record number of teams com- peting.

The first 2012 JDC held on Sunday 27 May saw 30 boys/girls teams compete and by the second carnival on Sunday 24 June this had risen to 36 teams with over 270 9-11 year olds experiencing representative level basketball.

The JDC concept began in 2010 to replace the old Under 12 carnivals when the Under 12 competition became a full time WABL age group. It started with just 13 boys/girls teams and has grown in popularity ever since.

The format for every JDC sees each team play three games of four fully timed 5 minute quarters. The aim is to provide players and families the opportunity to experience representative basketball before entering the WABL competition the following year. In addition to this it also allows teams to develop players who missed out on their Under 12 WABL teams.

Ten out of the twelve WABL associations all nominate at least one team in the competition with players getting the opportunity to play against teams from as far north as Wanneroo and as far south as South West.

To view the results from the first two JDC visit www.WABL.asn.au and view the “Fixtures/Results” page, for further details on the JDC please contact Competitions Manager Christian Rice ([email protected] or 6272 0744).

Recent referee courses

Last Friday night Perry Lakes Hawks juniors were put through an Association Beginner course by BWA’s Vlad Alava. The twenty-two bright eyed and enthusiastic youngsters were introduced to the basics of officiating with a view to joining the Perry Lakes junior domestic referee ranks. Despite the course beginning a on a Friday night after a long week of school, the participants were fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They are now well on their way to holding court in both Friday night and Saturday morning competitions at Perry Lakes. Good luck kids!

Brett’s Blurb

How do I become a better rebounder? Rebounding is an aspect in the game of basketball that often gets ignored in training sessions. Many coaches talk about “blocking or boxing out” at the defensive end and “hitting the glass” on the offensive end, however rarely explain how to execute these two skills and the im- portance of them.

In simple terms, defensive rebounding relies mainly on positioning while offensive rebounding requires agility and movement. Defensive rebounding also requires a total team effort while offensive rebounding is mainly an individual effort (however should be a team effort as well). Therefore, defensive and offensive rebounding skills and techniques must be addressed and perfected separately.

Three areas to speak to your players about when teaching rebounding include:

1) Anticipate and assume that all shots will miss. If your players have this mentality then the importance of getting rebounds will be in- creased substantially. Every offensive rebound means that your team will get another opportunity to score again (more shots). Likewise, every defensive rebound means limits the opposition from getting another chance to score.

2) Think about the location and distance the ball will rebound. This will determined by several factors including where the shot is taken from (including angle and distance). Most of the time, the rebound will also occur on the opposite side of the basket from where the shot is taken. Also, shots taken from a further distance from the basket will usually rebound long.

3) Talk to your players about the “effort factor.” To be a highly successful rebounder, players must want, and be very determined, to get the ball. Desire and determination is also what allows players with lesser physical abilities to out perform players with greater talent. For- mer NBA player Dennis Rodman when asked about what his secret to rebounding was responded with “I just go and get the ball!”

Good luck teaching your players the importance of rebounding and remember: "You can over shoot, over dribble, or over pass; but you can never over rebound!" (anon)

Drill of the month

‘Tight Chairs’ Dribbling Drill

This drill will improve dribbling and dribble moves with many repetitions in a short period of time. Inform players that they can also do this drill at home in their basement or driveway. Set-up: Set up six chairs or cones as indicated in the diagram. We usually start with the left hand, so we face the row of chairs on the right with their seats facing the end line, while the seats of the left row of chairs face the half-court line. This is so the dribbler can hit the seat of the chair with his off hand as he/she makes a dribble move.

The Drill: Each player has a ball and will dribble between the chairs, making a pre- scribed dribble-move at each chair. We do the same move at each of the six chairs and will do one or two "laps" through the chairs for each dribble move (depending on how much time we want to spend on the drill). Some of the dribble moves that we use are: (1) the crossover dribble (2) in-and-out move (3) behind the back move (4) thru the legs dribble (5) spin move

Start with the left hand. After doing all the moves left-handed, turn the chairs around, start from the opposite side and do all the same moves with the right hand.
