  • Super Mario 64 Was Proclaimed by Many As "The Greatest Video Game
The People Behind Mario: When Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. (NCL), hired a young art student as an apprentice in 1980, he had no idea that he was changing video games forever. That young apprentice was none other than the highly revered Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind Mario. Miyamoto provided the inspiration for each Mario game Nintendo produces, as he still does today, with the trite exception of the unrelated “Mario-based” games produced by other companies. Just between the years 1985 and 1991, Miyamoto produced eight Mario games that went on to collectively sell 70 million copies. By record industry standards, Miyamoto had gone 70 times platinum in a brief six years. When the Nintendo chairman Gunpei Yokoi was assigned to oversee Miyamoto when he was first hired, Yokoi complained that “he knows nothing about video games” (Game Over 106). It turned out that the young apprentice knew more about video games than Yokoi, or anyone else in the world, ever could. Miyamoto’s Nintendo group, “R&D4,” had the assignment to come up with “the most imaginative video games ever” (Game Over 49), and they did just that. No one disagrees when they hear that "Shigeru is to video gaming what John Lennon is to Music!" (www.nintendoland.com) As soon as Miyamoto and Mario entered the scene, America, Japan, and the rest of the world had become totally engrossed in “Mario Mania.” Before delving deeply into the character that made Nintendo a success, we must first take a look at Nintendo, and its leader, Hiroshi Yamauchi.

  • Super Mario 3D Land Finally Came Along, I Didn't Expect Much Other Than a Last- Ditch Effort to Bring Life to the 3DS, Complete with a Shoehorned 3D Gimmick
For the first several months of the Nintendo 3DS's life, the most compelling games on the platform were remakes and rehashes of 15-year-old Nintendo 64 titles. Despite the huge success of New Super Mario Bros. on the DS (and its Wii counterpart), there wasn't a Mario game to be seen until November 2011, and by then critics and gamers were worried about the future of Nintendo's new flagship handheld. When Super Mario 3D Land finally came along, I didn't expect much other than a last- ditch effort to bring life to the 3DS, complete with a shoehorned 3D gimmick. The truth, though, is that 3D Land is a fresh, interesting, and complex platformer that rightfully bears the Mario name. If you're familiar with the Mario series, you can probably guess the story of 3D Land. If not --- shame on you --- Bowser, king of the Koopas, has kidnapped Princess Peach and whisked her off to his castle, leaving Mario and a few of his Toad pals to rescue her. There's some business about a tree that grows magical leaves, but rest assured, this is still your classic Mario story: Bowser. Peach. Kidnapped. Rescue. Got it. 3D Land walks a delicate line between something old and something new. The courses are a cool fusion between old-school linear 2D Mario levels and open worlds reminiscent of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. Each course has a well-defined start and end point, but navigating the levels is done entirely in three dimensions at your will.

111 Battery-Free Game Boy JASPER DE WINKEL, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands VITO KORTBEEK, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands JOSIAH HESTER, Northwestern University, USA PRZEMYSŁAW PAWEŁCZAK, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands We present ENGAGE, the first battery-free, personal mobile gaming device powered by energy harvested from thegamer actions and sunlight. Our design implements a power failure resilient Nintendo Game Boy emulator that can run off-the-shelf classic Game Boy games like Tetris or Super Mario Land. This emulator is capable of intermittent operation by tracking memory usage, avoiding the need for always checkpointing all volatile memory, and decouples the game loop from user interface mechanics allowing for restoration after power failure. We build custom hardware that harvests energy from gamer button presses and sunlight, and leverages a mixed volatility memory architecture for efficient intermittent emulation of game binaries. Beyond a fun toy, our design represents the first battery-free system design for continuous user attention despite frequent power failures caused by intermittent energy harvesting. We tackle key challenges in intermittent computing for interaction including seamless displays and dynamic incentive-based gameplay for energy harvesting. This work provides a reference implementation and framework for a future of battery-free mobile gaming in a more sustainable Internet of Things. • Mario Debuted As "Jumpman" in the Arcade Game Donkey Kong
Mario debuted as "Jumpman" in the arcade game Donkey Kong on July 9, 1981.[17] He is shown as a carpenter that has a pet ape.[18] The carpenter mistreats the ape, so Donkey Kong escapes and kidnaps Jumpman's girlfriend, originally known as the Lady, but later named Pauline. The player must take the role of Jumpman and rescue the girl. The character was later renamed "Mario" in the 1982 arcade game Donkey Kong Junior, the only game in which he has ever been portrayed as an antagonist. In the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros., Mario and his younger brotherLuigi are portrayed as Italian-American[10] plumbers[19] who have to defeat creatures that have been coming from the sewers below New York. In Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Mario saves Princess Toadstool (later known as Princess Peach) of the Mushroom Kingdom from King Koopa.[20] To save Princess Toadstool, Mario conquers the eight worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom by going to the castle in each to defeat a minion of King Koopa. To reach each castle, Mario battles through three sub-worlds by defeating King Koopa's henchmen. If Mario successfully fights his way through the castle and defeats the minion, he frees a Mushroom Retainer.[21] Inside the eighth castle, Mario has a final fight with King Koopa and frees Princess Toadstool. In Super Mario Bros. 2, the player could choose between Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Princess Peach. Each character possesses unique abilities (Luigi has stronger jumping ability, Toad can dig the fastest, and Peach can float), with Mario being the most well-rounded.

  • The Game Boy Turns 30: Remembering the Perfect Harmony of Hardware and Software
The Game Boy Turns 30: Remembering the Perfect Harmony of Hardware and Software ALPHA @TeamAlphaBCN games.thisisalpha.com It’s hard to imagine a world of video games without the Nintendo Game Boy, the simple but popular handheld that turns thirty years old this year. It single-handedly dominated the portable market, beating out more powerful and expensive competitors such as Atari’s Lynx and the Sega Game Gear. The Game Boy was the perfect combination of well-designed hardware and excellent software. Simplicity in Design Nintendo launched the Game Boy in Japan in April 1989, followed by a July North American release, and finally a September 1990 European release. It was an immediate success in every region. The Game Boy certainly wasn’t the first handheld gaming device. It wasn’t the most powerful either. But its longevity is undeniable. The Game Boy also had a huge advantage over its chief competitor, Sega’s Game Gear. That advantage was battery life. Four AAA batteries would give you approximately fifteen hours of gameplay, compared to three-to-five hours of gameplay using six AAA batteries for Game Gear. Over time, that would lead to huge savings in batteries. The idea to limit the Game Boy’s power turned out to be a brilliant move. Longer battery life meant that the Game Boy was the defacto handheld for long car rides, summer vacations, and late night gaming sessions before bed. The choices made in the design of the Game Boy ensured that the end product was durable - it’s been nicknamed a brick for a reason.
