  • Estimating Player Contribution in Hockey with Regularized Logistic Regression
DOI 10.1515/jqas-2012-0001 JQAS 2013; 9(1): 97–111 Robert B. Gramacy * , Shane T. Jensen and Matt Taddy Estimating player contribution in hockey with regularized logistic regression Abstract: We present a regularized logistic regression value: the number of goals scored by a player ’ s team model for evaluating player contributions in hockey. The minus the number of goals scored by the opposing team traditional metric for this purpose is the plus-minus statis- while that player is on the ice. tic, which allocates a single unit of credit (for or against) More complex measures of player performance have to each player on the ice for a goal. However, plus-minus been proposed to take into account game data beyond scores measure only the marginal effect of players, do not goal scoring, such as hits or face-offs. Examples include account for sample size, and provide a very noisy estimate the adjusted minus/plus probability approach of Schuck- of performance. We investigate a related regression prob- ers et al. (2010) and indices such as Corsi and DeltaSOT, lem: what does each player on the ice contribute, beyond as reviewed by Vollman (2010) . Unfortunately, analysts aggregate team performance and other factors, to the odds do not generally agree on the relative importance of the that a given goal was scored by their team ? Due to the added information. While it is possible to statistically infer large- p (number of players) and imbalanced design setting additional variable effects in a probability model for team of hockey analysis, a major part of our contribution is a performance (Thomas et al.

  • MEDIA CLIPS Columbus Blue Jackets at Boston Bruins January 2, 2020
MEDIA CLIPS Columbus Blue Jackets at Boston Bruins January 2, 2020 Columbus Blue Jackets Columbus Blue Jackets’ troubles in overtime tied to penalties By Jacob Myers – The Columbus Dispatch – December 31, 2019 Back in October when the Blue Jackets lost two games in overtime on back-to-back nights, John Tortorella didn’t hesitate to mention the importance of those additional points at the end of seasons when playoff spots are hanging in the balance. More than two months later, the Jackets have posted a 1-4 record in games decided in overtime or a shootout in December, prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Florida Panthers, while sitting six points out of the final wild card spot. In each of those overtime or shootout losses, the Jackets either lost on the penalty kill or had to kill one off. Three-on-three overtime can be a crapshoot, with its fast-paced nature and high frequency of odd-man rushes. But the improvement in those extra periods — and avoiding them entirely — starts with cutting out unnecessary penalties that have limited the Jackets’ ability to sustain any offense. "It's not so much getting back in the race, it's about winning the next game," Tortorella said Tuesday after morning skate. "It's about giving yourself a chance to win the game and not lose sitting in the box and taking more than two or three (penalties) during a game. Your whole bench is disrupted. It's hard to do." Overall, the Jackets are one of the least-penalized teams in the league.

  • Turnbull Hockey Pool For
Turnbull Hockey Pool for Each year, Turnbull students participate in several fundraising initiatives, which we promote as a way to develop a sense of community, leadership and social responsibility within the students. Last year's grade 7 and 8 students put forth a great deal of effort campaigning friends and family members to join Turnbull's annual NHL hockey pool, raising a total of $1750 for a charity of their choice (the United Way). This year's group has decided to run the hockey pool for the benefit of Help Lesotho, an international development organization working in the AIDS-ravaged country of Lesotho in southern Africa. From www.helplesotho.org "Help Lesotho’s programs foster hope and motivation in those who are most in need: orphans, vulnerable children, at-risk youth and grandmothers. Our work targets root causes and community priorities, including literacy, youth leadership training, school twinning, child sponsorship and gender programming. Help Lesotho is an effective, sustainable organization that is working at the grass-roots level to support the next generation of leaders in Lesotho." Your participation in this year's NHL hockey pool is very much appreciated. We believe it will provide students and their friends and families an opportunity to have fun together while giving back to their community by raising awareness and funds for a great cause. Prizes: > Grand Prize awarded to contestant whose team accumulates the most points over the regular NHL season = 10" Samsung Galaxy Tablet > Monthly Prizes awarded to the contestants whose teams accumulate the most points over each designated period (see website) = Two Movie Passes How it Works: > Everyone in the community is welcome to join in on the fun.
