Librarian Mariel Johnson A graduate of the New England Conservatory, Henry Mollicone has studied composition with Donald Martino, Ron Nelson, Daniel Pinkham, Gunther Schuller, and Seymour Schfrin . He is currently a professor at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, Calif ., and at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif . He has written works for orchestra, voice, chorus, ballet, and solo voice, as well as music for film, television, and theater . He has worked with several distinguished actors as a conductor, composer, and pianist, including Jean Stapelton, David Ogden Stiers, Tovah Feldshuh, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Angela Lansbury . Mollicone has guest-conducted at several American opera companies, including those in Baltimore, Portland, Augusta, Lake George, Central City, and Cleveland . In 1976, he was a musical assistant to Leonard Bernstein for the production of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and from 1971 to 1976, was an assistant conductor at the Opera . Mollicone’s one-act operas include The Face on the Barroom Floor, which was a recipient of the American Composers’ Recording Award and is one of America’s most oft-performed contemporary operas . His full-length operas include Coyote Tales (1998), Hotel Eden (1989), and Gabriel’s Daughter (2003). Completed in June, 2004, In Time of War: Prayers and Meditations was commissioned by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra . The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time and juxtaposes vocal movements, based upon Latin prayers, with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects) . The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the “sings of the world,” and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella . The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which Mollicone believe touches us on a deep level . As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness . Unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists . In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures . This work is about the coexistence of these two disparate but ever-present realities, representing the best (unconditional love) and the worst (war) aspects of the human condition .
