Mollicone has guest-conducted at several American opera companies, including those in Baltimore, Portland, Augusta, Lake George, Central City, and Cleveland . In 1976, he was a musical assistant to Leonard Bernstein for the production of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and from 1971 to 1976, was an assistant conductor at the New York City Opera . Mollicone’s one-act operas include The Face on the Barroom Floor, which was a recipient of the American Composers’ Recording Award and is one of America’s most oft-performed contemporary operas . His full-length operas include Coyote Tales (1998), Hotel Eden (1989), and Gabriel’s Daughter (2003). Completed in June, 2004, In Time of War: Prayers and Meditations was commissioned by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra . The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time and juxtaposes vocal movements, based upon Latin prayers, with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects) . The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the “sings of the world,” and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella . The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which Mollicone believe touches us on a deep level . As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness . Unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists . In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures . This work is about the coexistence of these two disparate but ever-present realities, representing the best (unconditional love) and the worst (war) aspects of the human condition . Carolina Castells, originally from Miami, Fla ., is currently a doctoral candidate at Indiana University, where she recently received her master’s degree . With Indiana University Opera Theater, she has performed the roles of Emily Webb (Our Town), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), and Antonia (Les contes d’Hoffmann) . Castells received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Miami, where she performed the roles of Pamina (The Magic Flute) and Yum-Yum (The Mikado) . At the Brevard Music Center, she performed the title role in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah . Castells has previously performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as a soloist for Brahms’ Deutches Requiem and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony . She was the soprano soloist in the world première of Shawn Crouch’s Requiem for Hiroshima with the chamber group Seraphic Fire and participated in The Song Continues … 2008, a master class series sponsored by The Marilyn Horne Foundation . Last year, Castells was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions . She studies with Costanza Cuccaro . Christophed Rouse is one of America’s most prominent composers of orchestral music . His works have won a Pulitzer Prize (for his Trombone Concerto) and a Grammy Award (for Concert de Gaudí), as well as election in 2002 to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters . Rouse has created a body of work know for its emotional intensity . Born in Baltimore in 1949, Rouse developed an early interest in both classical and popular music . He graduated from Oberlin Conservatory and Cornell University, numbering among his principal teachers George Crumb and Karel Husa . Rouse maintained a steady interest in popular music and while at the Eastman School of Music, where he was professor of composition until 2002, he taught a course on the history of rock . Rouse is currently a member of the composition faculty at The Juilliard School . While the Rouse catalog includes a number of acclaimed chamber and ensemble works, he is best known for his mastery of orchestral writing . His music has been played by every major orchestra in the U .S ., and numerous ensembles
