The Italian rice is not a commodity Paolo Carrà Chairman of the Board of Directors Ente Nazionale Risi Brussels, 4 June 2018 Ente Nazionale Risi is a public Agency supervised by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture which aims to protect the national rice production. Italy is the first rice producer in the EU Italy 52.20% Spain 25.80% Portugal 6.97% Greece 5.49% France 4.66% Romania 2.44% Bulgaria 1.78% Hungary 0.66% The Italian rice production represents 0.2% of the world rice production The names of some rice varieties grown in Italy (e.g. Carnaroli, Arborio, Vialone nano) are as important as trademarks. The rice grown in EU has been recognized by the European Commission as a public good from the environmental point of view. The rice grown in EU is sustainable from the environmental point of view and it is healthy for consumers. The rice imported into the EU is not always healthy and environmentally friendly. Sometimes the Basmati rice imported into the EU contains the fungicide Carbendazim which is banned in EU. During 2006 traces of a variety of unapproved GM rice were found in imports into EU from USA. In Italy there is the collective brand «Riso Italiano» managed by Ente Nazionale Risi. This brand guarantees the origin, nature and quality of the rice sold by Italian operators. The brand «Riso Italiano» was a good answer to the issue of unapproved GM rice imported from USA. The European rice, in particular the Italian rice, is different from rice grown in the rest of the world because it is not a commodity.

California Rice Production Workshop, v15 Variety Selection and Management Introduction and History Since its beginning in 1912, California’s rice industry limited its produc - tion and marketing largely to a few short and medium grain japonica varieties, developed from stocks originating in Japan and China. These varieties produced good yields of quality rice in the dry, temperate cli - mate of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. For the grower, the choice of variety to plant was relatively simple because the few varieties available were similar in performance, yield potential and milling qual - ity when properly managed. Included were Colusa, Caloro and Calrose released in 1918, 1921 and 1948, respectively, and Earlirose, a productive, early maturing, proprietary variety, released in 1965 which soon became a popular variety for cold areas and/or late plantings. These were the major rice varieties grown in California until the early 1970’s. Then, the variety picture began to change significantly. A powerful impetus for this was the enactment of California Rice Research Marketing Order that established the California Rice Research Board in 1969. This grower initiative provided significant and regular funding to hasten development and release of new varieties. The medium grain variety CS-M3 was released in 1970 and the short grain variety CS-S4 in 1971, from rice hybridizations made in 1946 and 1957 at the Rice Experiment Station (RES) at Biggs, CA. CS-M3 gained wide acceptance and competed with the older Calrose for acreage. But, CS-S4, though an improvement over Caloro, was not widely grown because of its suscep - Publicly devel - tibility to low temperature induced sterility.

Seeding Controversy: Did Israel Invent the Cherry Tomato? Abstract This research brief explores the controversial history of the cherry tomato and analyzes its role in the construction of Israel's national identity. Since 2003, mentions of Israel having “invented” the cherry tomato have appeared in both Israeli and international media. However, such claims have sparked outrage on various blogs and websites, and questions have been raised about the veracity of Israel's claims—as well as about the true origin of the cherry tomato. I explore the history of the cherry tomato, tracing mentions of it from the Renaissance period to modern times. In addition, I clarify the assertions of Israeli scientists credited with the development of the cherry tomato—that their research transformed the cherry tomato into a commodity in the 1980s. Finally, I discuss the cherry tomato claim in light of the Israeli government's hasbara (Hebrew for “explanation”) efforts, which attempt to counter negative images of Israel in the international press. While much previous scholarship on food and nationalism has focused on the relationship between the cultivation, preparation, or consumption of a food and the construction of a national identity, the present work focuses on the relationship between the food's invention narrative and national identity.

  • Vegan Lunch Box : 150 Amazing, Animal-Free Lunches Kids and Grown-Ups Will Love! / Jennifer Mccann
1600940729 text_rev.qxd 4/21/08 8:53 AM Page i PRAISE FOR VEGAN LUNCH BOX “Jennifer McCann’s cookbook makes vegan cooking accessible and fun. It’s informative but not stuffy, detailed yet concise, and the recipes are creative without being difficult. There are so many delicious, well put to- gether options here, it’s not only perfect for kids but for anyone who ever eats lunch!” —Isa Chandra Moskowitz, author of VEGANOMICON “Being a vegan kid just got a lot easier! The menus in Vegan LunchLunch BoxBox make it easy to plan a balanced and nutritious lunch for your kids (or your- self!). The variety alone makes it worth having.” —Erin Pavlina, author of RAISING VEGAN CHILDREN IN A NON-VEGAN WORLD “Destined to become a classic, this is the book vegan parents have been waiting for. And who knew? A vegan mom started a blog describing the lunches she made for her son for one school year, and it won the 2006 Bloggie Award for “Best Food Blog” (NOT “best VEGETARIAN food blog,” but “Best Food Blog,” period!). It inspired, delighted, and motivated not only vegan parents, but omnivores bored with their own lackluster lunches. This book will continue delighting with recipes that are as innovative, kid- pleasing, and healthful as they are delicious.” —Bryanna Clark Grogan, author of NONNA’S ITALIAN KITCHEN 1600940729 text_rev.qxd 4/21/08 8:53 AM Page ii This page intentionally left blank 1600940729 text_rev.qxd 4/21/08 8:53 AM Page iii Vegan Lunch Box 1600940729 text_rev.qxd 4/21/08 8:53 AM Page iv This page intentionally left blank 1600940729 text_rev.qxd 4/21/08 8:53 AM Page v Vegan Lunch Box 150 Amazing, Animal-Free Lunches Kids and Grown-Ups Will Love! • Identification and Utilization of Elite Genes from Elite Germplasms for Yield Improvement
Chapter 5 Identification and Utilization of Elite Genes from Elite Germplasms for Yield Improvement Dawei Xue, Qian Qian and Sheng Teng Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/56390 1. Introduction Rice is a major food crop in the world. Half of the world's population relies on rice as their staple food. Due to continuous growth of human population, the area of arable land decreases every year. Therefore, ensuring adequate grain production has become a challenge for many countries. Rice production has an important role in global food security, poverty alleviation and rural employment. The current rate of increase in mean rice yield per annum is only 0.8%, which falls behind the rate of population growth annually. An annual mean increase in rice production of 1.2% is required between 2001 and 2030 in order to catch up with the growing food demand resulting from increase in population[1,2]. Constrained by lack of water resources and arable land, the area for rice cultivation has decreased in the context of economic development and urbanization. It is evident that rice yield cannot be increased by simply expanding the cultivation area. In light of this, it is important to pay attention to increasing rice yield per unit area. There are two major ap‐ proaches for achieving this goal: improving cultivation conditions and technology, and breeding rice varieties with higher yield potential. In order to improve the cultivation techni‐ que, selecting superior cultivars is essential. Practices in rice science and production have shown that high-yield breeding of rice is essential for yield increase, and a breakthrough is usually made through discovery and effective utilization of specific germplasm (gene).
