Ho scelto appositamente queste due opere per confrontarle capire quali possono essere stati i cambiamenti avvenuti nell’arco di tempo che le separa. Il primo testo che ho tradotto e analizzato fa parte del libro “Seneca Falls and the Origins of Women’s Rights Movement”, “Seneca Falls e le Origini del Movimento per i Diritti delle Donne” di Sally McMillen, ex insegnante di storia all’Università di Davidson, nel North Carolina. L’autrice è specializzata nella storia statunitense e in particolare nel ruolo che le donne hanno ricoperto in essa. McMillen è infatti molto precisa nel descrivere tutto: i paesaggi degli anni 1840, i movimenti politici e religiosi e trascrive interi frammenti originali di dialoghi tra i personaggi principali dell’opera, riportando così in vita anche il linguaggio utilizzato in quel periodo storico. Nel frammento tradotto da me, le protagoniste, tra cui Elizabeth Cady Stanton, colei che ha steso e poi ha presentato pubblicamente la “Dichiarazione dei sentimenti”, intraprendono i primi passi concreti verso quella che sarà storicamente ricordata come la prima Convenzione in cui sono stati discussi i diritti delle donne. Tutto questo è accaduto nella cittadina di Seneca Falls, e da qui il titolo del libro e della Convenzione. Nel passaggio riportato in questa tesi si racconta come l’idea della Convenzione sia nata durante una cerimonia del the, da Lucretia Mott e Elizabeth, da sempre attiviste anche nell’abolizione della schiavitù. Elizabeth era ritenuta lo spirito movente di tutto, e infatti gran parte del merito del successo di questa Convenzione e delle conseguenze positive va a lei. Nel libro si racconta come la donna abbia attraversato un momento particolarmente difficile, mentre progettava la Convenzione e stendeva la Dichiarazione, poiché viveva perlopiù sola, essendo suo marito Harry spesso assente per lavoro, con una casa da mantenere e dei figli da accudire. La protagonista attraversa un periodo di esasperazione in cui si pensa abbia anche subìto un aborto spontaneo. Più tardi affermerà che quegli anni le sono stati utili per capire appieno la sofferenza che certe donne affrontano quotidianamente. Nel momento in cui si trova a dover sostenere il primo discorso 5 pubblico sui diritti delle donne, confessa che, per un attimo, avrebbe voluto abbandonare tutti i suoi princìpi e scappare. Nonostante questo, continua e la Convenzione si dimostra un successo, molto più di quanto previsto, ottenendo supporto anche da molti uomini. Un ruolo importante è svolto anche da Frederick Douglass, ex schiavo famoso per i suoi racconti sulla vita da schiavo e per il suo giornale, The North Star. Nel momento in cui Elizabeth si spingerà oltre nelle sue richieste, arrivando a pretendere anche il diritto di voto per le donne e la loro partecipazione attiva nella vita politica del Paese e nelle decisioni pubbliche, Douglass sarà l’unico a sostenerla. Egli affermerà che non avrebbe preteso il diritto di voto per sé stesso se non lo avessero avuto anche le donne. Considerando la fama che aveva raggiunto, questa sua presa di posizione avrebbe avuto un peso rilevante nello svolgimento degli avvenimenti successivi. Elizabeth, infatti,

    The Woman-Slave Analogy: Rhetorical Foundations in American Culture, 1830-1900 Ana Lucette Stevenson BComm (dist.), BA (HonsI) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics I Abstract During the 1830s, Sarah Grimké, the abolitionist and women’s rights reformer from South Carolina, stated: “It was when my soul was deeply moved at the wrongs of the slave that I first perceived distinctly the subject condition of women.” This rhetorical comparison between women and slaves – the woman-slave analogy – emerged in Europe during the seventeenth century, but gained peculiar significance in the United States during the nineteenth century. This rhetoric was inspired by the Revolutionary Era language of liberty versus tyranny, and discourses of slavery gained prominence in the reform culture that was dominated by the American antislavery movement and shared among the sisterhood of reforms. The woman-slave analogy functioned on the idea that the position of women was no better – nor any freer – than slaves. It was used to critique the exclusion of women from a national body politic based on the concept that “all men are created equal.” From the 1830s onwards, this analogy came to permeate the rhetorical practices of social reformers, especially those involved in the antislavery, women’s rights, dress reform, suffrage and labour movements. Sarah’s sister, Angelina, asked: “Can you not see that women could do, and would do a hundred times more for the slave if she were not fettered?” My thesis explores manifestations of the woman-slave analogy through the themes of marriage, fashion, politics, labour, and sex.

Gelms As our digital environments—in their inhabitants, communities, and cultures—have evolved, harassment, unfortunately, has become the status quo on the internet (Duggan, 2014 & 2017; Jane, 2014b). Harassment is an issue that disproportionately affects women, particularly women of color (Citron, 2014; Mantilla, 2015), LGBTQIA+ women (Herring et al., 2002; Warzel, 2016), and women who engage in social justice, civil rights, and feminist discourses (Cole, 2015; Davies, 2015; Jane, 2014a). Whitney Phillips (2015) notes that it’s politically significant to pay attention to issues of online harassment because this kind of invective calls “attention to dominant cultural mores” (p. 7). Keeping our finger on the pulse of such attitudes is imperative to understand who is excluded from digital publics and how these exclusions perpetuate racism and sexism to “preserve the internet as a space free of politics and thus free of challenge to white masculine heterosexual hegemony” (Higgin, 2013, n.p.). While rhetoric and writing as a field has a long history of examining myriad exclusionary practices that occur in public discourses, we still have much work to do in understanding how online harassment, particularly that which is gendered, manifests in digital publics and to what rhetorical effect.

The impetus behind this was to investigate taken for granted assumptions about who harassers are, what they do online, and how they do it. To begin, I highlight the discourse of online harassment of women in scholarship and online-news media, discussing the assumptions made about who is harassing and why. I discuss the lack of consideration of multi-layered harassment and argue for more research that takes into consideration the intersectionality of harassing content, and the experiences of all women online. I provide an overview of online methodologies and of feminism on the internet. I then undertake an investigation into harassers behind online harassment of women, and find trends in user profiles, user behaviour, and in online communication patterns more broadly. I discuss how researching this topic affected me personally, reflecting on the impact of viewing high amounts abusive content. My findings challenged many of the assumptions initially identified, so, with that in mind, I provide a discussion of why such assumptions are problematic. I argue that such assumptions contribute to a discourse that homogenizes harassment and harassers, and overlooks broader internet-specific behaviours.

Conflict and Health (2021) 15:24 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13031-021-00351-y RESEARCH Open Access Intimate partner violence against women on the Colombia Ecuador border: a mixed- methods analysis of the liminal migrant experience Colleen Keating1, Sarah Treves-Kagan2 and Ana Maria Buller3* Abstract Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) has serious long-term health and psychological consequences and is highly prevalent in Latin America and among displaced populations. Liminality - the ambiguous in-between state of individuals completing a migratory journey - represents a state of legal, economic, and physical insecurity. Through the framework of liminality, this analysis seeks to understand the unique challenges faced by displaced Colombian women in Ecuador including their experience of IPV. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of 15 in-depth interviews and 319 longitudinal surveys, conducted on the border of Ecuador and Colombia, following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. We analysed interviews thematically and mapped the main themes onto complementary quantitative variables. We conducted logistic regression with identified risk and protective factors (measured at time 1) and recent IPV (measured at time 2), controlling for demographic characteristics and IPV at time 1. Results: Our mixed-methods analysis revealed four main mechanisms by which displacement influenced the social and economic realities of Colombian women years after crossing the border, compounding their risk of IPV and limiting their ability to escape it. Lack of legal residence and documentation, violence experienced along life course and migratory continuums which increased their risk for later revictimisation, social isolation including loss of support networks and restricted mobility and lastly, financial stress.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Chinese women reacted in a variety of ways to the social and political changes of the era. Some women were actively engaged in politics while others were not. Some women became revolutionaries and fought for reform in China, other women were more willing to work with and within the established cultural framework. Discussion of reforms and reformers in the late nineteenth-early twentieth centuries are primarily focused on men and male activism; however, some women felt very strongly about reform and were willing to die in order to help China modernize. This thesis explores the life experiences and activism of five women who lived at the end of China’s imperial period and saw the birth of the Republican period. By analyzing and comparing the experiences of Zheng Yuxiu, Yang Buwei, Xie Bingying, Wang Su Chun, and Ning Lao Taitai, this thesis helps to unlock the complex and often hidden lives of Chinese women in modern Chinese history. Abstract: This paper examines the ways in which girls and women are using digital media platforms to challenge the rape culture they experience in their everyday lives; including street harassment, sexual assault, and the policing of the body and clothing in school settings. Focusing on three international cases, including the anti-street harassment site Hollaback!, the hashtag #BeenRapedNeverReported, and interviews with teenage Twitter activists, the paper asks: What experiences of harassment, misogyny and rape culture are girls and women responding to? How are girls and women using digital media technologies to document experiences of sexual violence, harassment, and sexism? And, why are girls and women choosing to mobilize digital media technologies in such a way? Employing an approach that includes ethnographic methods such as semi-structured interviews, content analysis, discursive textual analysis, and affect theories, we detail a range of ways that women and girls are using social media platforms to speak about, and thus make visible, experiences of rape culture.
