    NEWSLETTER ISSUE 14 April 2012 News: New war memorial in the making for Plungar: Tim Chamberlain of the East Midlands branch of the Western Front Association has kindly provided me with information on a fundraising effort to install a memorial to the casualties of a plane crash near Plungar in Melton district. If you would like to be put in touch, please let me know. A public meeting is to be held on 26th April at 7.30pm in Plungar Village Hall. The memorial is due to be unveiled on Saturday 22nd September, with service at 2pm at Plungar Church. You can read more about the crash in the article provided by Tim Chamberlain below. Veteran experiences: I’m glad to be working with the Leicester branch of the British Korean Veteran’s Association on some oral history recordings, which I hope to start in the next few months. I would like to use this to interest schools across Leicestershire in hosting some of the Korean veterans who can speak about their experiences to the students. 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the armistice on 27th July 1953; this is the only thing that technically prevents the fighting from continuing to this day, as a peace settlement was never reached. Members of the Leicester branch were interviewed on the subject of National Service at an event at Donington le Heath Manor House (right) last November, which as you will see in the events section is being run once again, on 17th June. We issue this response in the spirit of contributing to the processes surrounding this vast infrastructure project, but must include the caveat that the Council can only respond to the material to hand and further intensive work with HS2 Ltd is required to fully understand the impacts for Leicestershire and the most appropriate mitigation. ii) The Council recognises that the WDES is a draft document. However, it is disappointing that even in draft; there is a distinct lack of information provided in sections of the WDES, especially regarding the proposed scheme’s constructional and operational impacts and in respect of its design. But, the Council have determined to use this as an opportunity to shape the design and mitigation across the County. Where clear mitigation is not yet defined, the Council will seek to secure assurances from HS2 Ltd that further work will be carried out to inform the preparation of the Hybrid Bill, including HS2 Ltd preparing an Interim Transport Assessment (including sensitivity testing), and during the Parliamentary processes.

    THE PARISH AND CHURCH OF ROTHLEY, LEICESTERSHIRE: A RE-INTERPRETATION Vanessa McLoughlin The following article draws on data gathered, interpreted and recorded in the author’s Ph.D. thesis of 2006 concerning the manor, parish and soke of Rothley, Leicestershire. During her research the author used a combination of historical and archaeological evidence, and concluded that the church at Rothley was a pre- Conquest minster founded in the mid- to late-tenth century. Some of the evidence regarding the church and parish is summarised in this article. Subsequent archaeological evidence has led the author to revise the original proposal, and she now suggests a new date for the foundation of the church at Rothley between the late-seventh and mid-eighth centuries. This foundation can be placed in the context of a Christian mission and the work of bishops, who sought to found bases from which to evangelise and baptise a local population beginning to embrace Christianity.
