Minckley The humpback chub is listed as a federally endangered species primarily as the result of the impacts of hydroelectric dam operations and the introduction of nonnative fishes. Geographic distribution of the humpback chub in the Colorado River basin is well documented, occurring in the major tributaries of the upper basin including the Green, White, Yampa and Little Snake Rivers. Currently there are five upper basin popUlations to include: the Green, Yampa, and Colorado river (at Black Rocks, Westwater Canyon and Cataract Canyon). In the lower basin distribution is from Glen Canyon Dam into Lake Mead. In Grand Canyon, the largest population occurs in the Little Colorado River although fish occur consistently at five other areas along the river corridor. ii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. The habitats used by humpback chubs are similar throughout the basin, varying with the life stage. Generally, larvae and fry occupy shoreline backwater habitats in slowly moving water. Young-of-the-year chub occur in slow to moderately moving eddies and adjacent backwaters. Juveniles live in deeper water such as low-velocity eddies and backwaters <10 m deep. Adults are in deep eddies and backwaters, presumably including depths >10 m. Adult humpback chubs are considered sedentary, occurring in canyon-bound reaches of the Colorado River Basin. However, there are exceptions when some individuals move further. The diet of this species consists of a variety of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, and occasionally fish. Reproduction has been confirmed throughout the basin but spawning has not been observed. Humpback chub host several parasites but only two present potential threats, the anchorworm and Asian tapeworm. These parasites have been found in the lower basin and may have negative impacts in the future. A recovery plan is in place for this species addressing the upper basin popUlation.     FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions.

    Version 2020-04-20 Humpback Chub (Gila cypha) Species Status Statement. Distribution Humpback chub is a long-lived fish endemic to the warm, turbid waters of the Colorado River Basin. Historically, it populated discrete, canyon-bound reaches throughout the basin, from the Upper Green, Upper Colorado and Yampa Rivers downstream through the Lower Colorado River. The species now occurs in only five populations, three of which are in Utah (USFWS 2017). The Utah populations are in Westwater Canyon, Cataract Canyon (both on the Colorado River), and the adjoining Desolation and Gray Canyons (on the Green River). The other two remaining populations are in Colorado (Black Rocks) and Arizona (Grand Canyon), both on the Colorado River. Table 1. Utah counties currently occupied by this species. Humpback Chub CARBON KANE DAGGETT SAN JUAN EMERY UINTAH GARFIELD WAYNE GRAND Abundance and Trends Among the earlier population losses due to water development projects, the construction of Flaming Gorge and Hoover Dams eliminated two historic populations (Hideout and Black Canyon). A third population (Yampa Canyon) has been undetected since 2004 and managers consider it functionally extirpated. While the reduction in its overall distribution is undisputed, monitoring abundance and trends in the remaining humpback chub populations is challenging. Conclusions and management decisions based on abundance estimates should be made with caution (Howard and Caldwell 2018). The Grand Canyon population is the largest population, and has maintained a stable trend for the past decade. The remaining Upper Basin populations have experienced periods of significant decline, but continue to persist with some recent signs of potential stabilization (USFWS 2017).
