Valley-Football.org Earl fueled the Bears’ passing game, hauling in 163 yards — a personal best that stands as the 15th-best single-game total on record at Missouri State — to help spark MSU’s best-ever offensive showing against an FBS squad. The Oklahoma City native caught eight passes overall, including a career-long 89-yard touchdown reception from Peyton Huslig that handed the Bears a 35-34 lead late in the first half. With his third career 100-yard receiving day, Earl moved into the Bears’ top 15 for all-time receiving yardage as well. Tight end Erik Furmanek also notched a career high with 91 yards, as four MSU seniors combined to account for 303 of the Bears’ 353 receiving yards. EARL, FURMANEK FUEL AERIAL ATTACK Senior tight end Erik Furmanek and senior receiver Malik Earl registered big season openers for MSU, combining for 254 of the Bears' 353 receiving yards at Mizzou (Sept. 2). The duo returns to fuel the Bears’ passing attack after emerging as legitimate offensive threats in 2016. Furmanek broke through during the second half of the season with 23 of his 27 overall receptions coming during conference play. The Belleville, Ill., native was MSU’s second-leading receiver during league play, averaging just under three grabs and 23.6 yards per outing. For the season, Furmanek’s 24 receptions marked the most for a Bears tight end since the 2012 season, when Matt Thayer reeled in 38 passes for 294 yards.

Earl hauled in a team-high 41 receptions for 534 yards and three touchdowns for MSU in 2016 to earn honorable mention All-MVFC recognition. He recorded 29 receptions for 407 yards in MVFC play, ranking fifth among all Valley receivers in receptions per game (4.7) and seventh in receiving yards (58.1 ypg.). The Oklahoma City native saw his personal streak of eight consecutive games with at least one reception come to an end Sept. 9 at North Dakota, but he rebounded to grab six catches for 80 yards in MSU's win over Murray State and has logged at least one catch in 32 of his 37 career games as a Bear. Sept. 30, 2017, Gate City Bank Field at the , Fargo, N.D. Game Game Missouri State...... 11 5 (2) North Dakota State...... 38 4 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- For the second-straight week Missouri State engaged one of the nation’s top teams for 30 minutes before falling victim to a second-half surge, as No. 2 North Dakota State pulled away for a 38-11 victory over the Bears. After a stingy Missouri State defense limited the high-powered Bison ground game to 51 yards in the opening half, Bruce Anderson and Lance Dunn combined for 140 second-half yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns as part of a string of 24 unanswered points for NDSU. Anderson gained a game-high 106 rushing yards, while Dunn reached the end zone twice as the duo averaged 9.4 yards per carry in leading the Bison to their seventh-straight win in the series. The NDSU defense set the tone for the contest, picking off three passes and stopping the Bears on eight of their 13 combined third and fourth-down attempts. MSU totaled just 234 yards of total offense after the Bison limited the Bears to 83 second-half yards. Robbie Grimsley led the way, pacing all defenders with 10 tackles to go along with a stop for a loss and an interception. North Dakota State used a quick-strike attack to build a 14-point first-quarter lead, getting a pair of lengthy drives on its first two possessions of the afternoon to take a commanding early lead. Each of Easton Stick’s five completions on the first Bison drive resulted in double-digit gains, including a 32-yard scoring play to Jeff Illies that capped the 90-yard march and put NDSU on top, 7-0. After stopping the Bears’ on their initial offensive possession, NDSU needed just four plays to find the end zone again, as Anderson turned in big gains on back-to-back plays to set up the touchdown. The junior running back ripped off a 35-yard run to open the series, then hauled in a Stick pass for 26 more yards to move the ball to the MSU 20. Dunn took care of the rest, covering the final 18 yards for his NCAA FCS-leading ninth rushing touchdown of the season. The Bears, who dominated the clock with over 21 minutes of offensive possession time in the opening half, engineered a 15-play drive that ate up nearly nine minutes. The drive was prolonged by a pair of NDSU personal foul penalties, as Peyton Huslig carried six times for 20 yards before being stopped at the NDSU 2 on fourth and goal.
