CRATYLUS By Plato Translated by Benjamin Jowett The Project Gutenberg EBook of Cratylus, by Plato INTRODUCTION. The Cratylus has always been a source of perplexity to the student of Plato. While in fancy and humour, and perfection of style and metaphysical originality, this dialogue may be ranked with the best of the Platonic writings, there has been an uncertainty about the motive of the piece, which interpreters have hitherto not succeeded in dispelling. We need not suppose that Plato used words in order to conceal his thoughts, or that he would have been unintelligible to an educated contemporary. In the Phaedrus and Euthydemus we also find a difficulty in determining the precise aim of the author. Plato wrote satires in the form of dialogues, and his meaning, like that of other satirical writers, has often slept in the ear of posterity. Two causes may be assigned for this obscurity: 1st, the subtlety and allusiveness of this species of composition; 2nd, the difficulty of reproducing a state of life and literature which has passed away. A satire is unmeaning unless we can place ourselves back among the persons and thoughts of the age in which it was written. Had the treatise of Antisthenes upon words, or the speculations of Cratylus, or some other Heracleitean of the fourth century B.C., on the nature of language been preserved to us; or if we had lived at the time, and been 'rich enough to attend the fifty-drachma course of Prodicus,' we should have understood Plato better, and many points which are now attributed to the extravagance of Socrates' humour would have been found, like the allusions of Aristophanes in the Clouds, to have gone home to the sophists and grammarians of the day. -

IBYCUS PMGF 287: LOVE AND DISGRACE Ἔρος αὖτέ µε κυανέοισιν ὑπὸ βλεφάροις τακέρ’ ὄµµασι δερκόµενος κηλήµασι παντοδαποῖς ἐς ἄπει- ρα δίκτυα Κύπριδος ἐσβάλλει· 5 ἦ µὰν τροµέω νιν ἐπερχόµενον, ὥστε φερέζυγος ἵππος ἀεθλοφόρος ποτὶ γήρᾳ ἀέκων σὺν ὄχεσφι θοοῖς ἐς ἅµιλλαν ἔβα. Judging from the source which has preserved this fragment for us and from its overall structure, which I will analyze below, I believe that these lines of Ibycus constitute in all probability a complete poem1. This provides us the opportunity for a thorough interpretation and evaluation, an opportu- nity which has not, in my opinion, been adequately exploited by scholars so far. The intricacy and dexterity of Ibycus’ poetic art in this particular speci- men of his work has gone largely unnoticed. As will be seen by the ensuing analysis, there is not even a single word in these seven verses which has a superfluous or merely ornamental function; on the contrary, it is carefully chosen, put and invested with a particular significance that contributes ef- fectively to the production of the implicit meaning that the poet imparts to his creation. And this meaning mostly concerns the unavoidable danger of facing disgrace in one’s efforts of erotic conquest. The first remark to be made is that Ibycus’ poem is comprised by two distinct images, which are however implicitly linked2; an initial connection is established by the correlation between the phrase Ἔρος αὖτέ µε and the adjective φερέζυγος: the subjugation of the horse, which comes to represent the poetic persona that Ibycus here adopts, denotes precisely that the speaker is constantly under the influence of Eros, that he finds himself repeatedly falling in love. -

Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods. -

Solon is cited and/or quoted thirty-four times in Plato’s dialogues, and alluded to many more times. My study shows that these references and allusions have deeper meaning when contextualized within the reception of Solon in the classical period. For Plato, Solon is a rhetorically powerful figure in advancing the relatively new practice of philosophy in Athens. While Solon himself did not adequately establish justice in the city, his legacy provided a model upon which Platonic philosophy could improve. Chapter One surveys the passing references to Solon in the dialogues as an introduction to my chapters on the dialogues in which Solon is a very prominent figure, Timaeus- Critias, Republic, and Laws. Chapter Two examines Critias’ use of his ancestor Solon to establish his own philosophic credentials. Chapter Three suggests that Socrates re- appropriates the aims and themes of Solon’s political poetry for Socratic philosophy. Chapter Four suggests that Solon provides a legislative model which Plato reconstructs in the Laws for the philosopher to supplant the role of legislator in Greek thought. -

The Tyranny of Method: a Pragmatic Defense of Philosophical Pluralism
THE TYRANNY OF METHOD: A PRAGMATIC DEFENSE OF PHILOSOPHICAL PLURALISM Vincent M. Colapietro Abstract: The history of philosophy is in no small measure a series of attempts to institute a fail-safe method. In response to what they take to be the scandal of disagreement (disagreement itself being judged as scandalous), a number of historically influential philosophers (e.g., Descartes, Peirce, Husserl, and Carnap) have time and again tried to craft a method for guaranteeing agreement. In light of the failure of these attempts, this tendency might be seen as remotely analogous to what is called in psychoanalytic parlance a “repetition compulsion.” In any event, historical reflections on this repeated tendency promise to be illuminating. But there is a polemical purpose animating these historical reflections. The author tries, in light of these reflections, to render plausible the suggestion that this tendency amounts to a tyranny of method and, in turn, such tyranny results in an inevitable impoverishment of philosophical thought. THE TOPIC of my essay is best brought into focus by recalling a central figure in the history of Western philosophy. 1 This recollection is, however, far from methodologically innocent. My deliberate turn toward a pivotal moment in our intellectual history – in brief, my turn toward history – will provide the basis for my critique of what I am disposed to identify as the tyranny of method. This tyranny is not so much exercised by any particular method as by the repeated impulse to institute a philosophical method of allegedly revolutionary significance. Look University of Kentucky Spring 2007 Plato’s Symposium Although we will be looking at the Symposium as work of philosophy, its literary qualities should not be ignored. It can easily be read as a Comedy in three acts (see below), with a prologue (the conversation between Apollodorus and his friend) and an epilogue (Alcibiades’ drunken, tragic (?) account of his love). Consider also the narrative complexity of the work. By the time we get to Diotima’s speech, we have the following levels of narration: Plato says that Apollodorus says that Aristodemus says that Socrates says that Diotima says…Why is there so much distance placed within the narration? Is it supposed to show us how far away the Truth lies? The six speeches given by the attendants can be group into three pairs: Phaedrus and Pausanias; Eryximachus and Aristophanes; and Agathon and Socrates. 1st speech: Phaedrus • There is no greater good for a young boy than a gentle lover, and for a lover a boy to love. • Consider Phaedrus’ suggestion regarding the nature of the relation between lover and beloved: “if a man in love is found doing something shameful… then nothing would give him more pain than being seen by the boy he loves. … If only we could have cities and armies of lovers…” (178d-179a) So, gays in the military would actually be a good thing, right? • Gods honor virtue most highly when it belongs to Love.
