Waxahatchee — Ivy Tripp Release Date: April 7, 2015 MRG 549 Katie
Waxahatchee — Ivy Tripp Release Date: April 7, 2015 MRG 549 Katie Crutchfield’s southern roots are undeniable. The name of her solo musical project Waxahatchee comes from a creek not far from her childhood home in Alabama and seems to represent both where she came from and where she’s going. Since leaving home, Crutchfield has drifted between New York and Philadelphia but chose to return to Alabama to write her first two albums: American Weekend, her debut filled with powerful lo-fi acoustic tracks full of lament, and Cerulean Salt, a more developed and solid narrative about growing up. Both are representations of a youthful struggle with unresolved issues and unrequited feelings. Waxhatchee’s latest record, Ivy Tripp, drifts confidently from these previous albums and brings forth a more informed and powerful recognition of where Crutchfield has currently found herself. The lament and grieving for her youth seem to have been replaced with control and sheer self-honesty. “My life has changed a lot in the last two years, and it’s been hard for me to process my feelings other than by writing songs,” says Crutchfield. “I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming, or just being cognizant in moments of deep confusion or sadness, and learning to really feel emotions and to grow from that.” Recorded and engineered by Kyle Gilbride of Wherever Audio at Crutchfield’s home on New York’s Long Island—with drums recorded in the gym of a local elementary school—Ivy Tripp presents a more developed and aged version of Waxahatchee. -

Waxahatchee on Taking Your Time
May 1, 2017 - Waxahatchee is the musical project of the Alabama-born, Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield. Her fourth Waxahatchee album, Out in the Storm, is out July 2017 on Merge. As told to Brandon Stosuy, 2010 words. Tags: Music, Process, Inspiration, Identity, Focus, Anxiety. Waxahatchee on taking your time You wrote recently and mentioned how you connected to the interview we ran with Perfume Genius. Anything specific? One thing I related to, and that I feel applies to my process, is the feeling of dread you get when you think you’re never going to be able to make something great again, or something that you love again. That’s kind of gone away for me. I used to have that all the time. The drive to make music has always stemmed from wanting to make something that I loved, and so I was always sort of making it for myself. But that good feeling, once you do that and you have a finished product, was always clouded by this fear that I’d never be able to do it again. As I’ve gotten older, and made a bunch of records, that’s sort of gone away. Experience, and maybe just a little bit of wisdom, has made it go away. That’s definitely progress. Musicians are asked to be creative within a cycle. You finish a record, tour, write another record, and tour again. It’s like you have to conjure inspiration to keep things moving. I’ve definitely felt like that, like I’ve had to conjure something. -

“Crazy B****”: Discriminatory Language, Radio Censorship, Regulation, and Enforcement Policies in Canada by Rebecca Irene Marie Foley A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO April 2016 Rebecca Irene Marie Foley, 2016 Abstract This thesis focuses on the censorship, or lack thereof, of discriminatory language on Canadian radio stations. In addition to purely discriminatory based language, this project also investigated the ways in which race, gender, sexuality, and ability were employed in popular music. Two data sets were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively to find that private and public radio stations in Canada are more likely to censor discriminatory or explicit content than their community station counterparts. Further, discriminatory language based on gender, is not only more likely to be contained in popular music, but it is also less likely to be censored in comparison to language based on racial or sexual orientation based discrimination. The first data set included 485 songs from the Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1985 and 2015. The second data set included 2818 songs from a six-month period (May-October 2015) of the top twenty charts from 27 different radio stations in Canada, including private, public, and community stations. Keywords: radio; broadcast policy; discrimination; popular music; Canada; ii Acknowledgements I wish to thank everyone who had a hand in helping me shape this thesis. From deep class discussions to small conversations outside of an academic environment, each interaction I had talking about my research helped me to refine, explain, and get my thoughts on paper in a relatively coherent way. -
