Hoffer Trinity University Introduction One of the most easily observable results of intercultural contact and communication is the set of loanwords that is imported into the vocabulary of each language involved. The field of cultures and languages in contact (Weinreich 1953) has grown a great deal over the past fifty years. From the early studies, a 'Scale' or 'Index of Receptivity' has been posited for languages which more readily accept borrowings. Alongside that scale, a 'Scale of Adaptability' has been posited. The study of a language's adaptability and receptivity of borrowed words, especially those from International English, provides some interesting case studies. Major languages such as English, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese make good case studies for the discussion of the indices of adaptability and receptivity. Language Borrowing Processes Language borrowing has been an interest to various fields of linguistics for some time. (Whitney 1875, deSaussure 1915, Sapir 1921, Pedersen 1931, Haugen 1950, Lehmann 1962, Hockett 1979, Anttila 1989) In the study language borrowing, loanwords are only one of the types of borrowings that occur across language boundaries. The speakers of a language have various options when confronted with new items and ideas in another language. Hockett (1958) has organized the options as follows. (1) Loanword Speakers may adopt the item or idea and the source language word for each. The borrowed form is a Loanword. These forms now function in the usual grammatical processes, with nouns taking plural and/or possessive forms of the new language and with verbs and adjectives receiving native morphemes as well.

To do so involves the description of typical and unsuccessful or deviant language use, by the way of databases and norms that document the frequency of certain language elements (words, grammatical constructions, words in context etc.), it involves the development of more or less formalized theories, the empirical testing of such theories, and the development of methods and instruments to measure language abilities. This special section on psycholinguistics contains examples of all of these investigative activi- ties. One could say: Business as usual. However, the significance of this collection of articles lies in the fact that the research groups behind them are situated in four Ibero-American countries: Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia (thereby slightly pushing the envelop provided by the journal’s name Advances in Latin American Psychology).

She holds a B.A. in Economics and International Studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies from the University of Kansas. Her interests include contemporary Latin American Theatre, U.S.- Mexico Border Studies, Brazilian Studies, Spanish and Portuguese language and literature, and contemporary Latin American cinema and music. Her publications discuss contemporary Latin American theatre and U.S.-Mexico Border dramaturgy. She has attended numerous conferences and been keynote speaker both at the national and international level in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.     PIONEER FAMILIES OF THE PRESIDIO SAN AGUSTÍN DEL TUCSON Introduction In 1856 the Mexican army left the Tucson Presidio, taking with them the civil, church, and military archives. At an 1879 hearing, Francisco Solano León was asked what had happened to the records. He reported that they had been taken to Imuris, but didn’t know their whereabouts afterwards (Journals of Private Land Claims n.d.). Some of the records turned up in a closet in Imuris that year and were taken by Alphonse Pinart to California, where they are in the collections of the Bancroft Library in Berkeley. However, most of the Tucson records, including the Catholic baptismal, marriage, and burial records appear to have been lost. Filomeno Santa Cruz reported that some were used as cigarette rolling papers. This project began in 1999, shortly after the discovery of the Leon farmstead adjacent to Interstate 10. While studying that family’s history, connections with other contemporary families became apparent. Tucson was a relatively small community of between 400 and 500 people from the 1770s to the 1850s. By the end of the Presidio years, most of the inhabitants were related to each other. By systematically combing through the surviving records, the lives and stories of several thousand people could be reconstructed. Native American families were not included in this study. There are a smaller number of available records that list the Native American residents of the San Agustin Mission and the Apaches who lived adjacent to the Presidio (see Dobyns 1976: 163-170). The two earliest censuses, for 1752 and 1766, do not list surnames for the residents, and only a few likely matches could be made between the two records.

This article uses advanced genetic testing to draw genea- logies for a particular set of Puerto Rican families, the Sotomayor and Colón families, with connections to the Iberian Pereira lineage. In the critical analysis of the existing fragmented and isolated documentation with advanced genetic testing, mainly Y-DNA, and in its proper historical context, long-standing brick walls have been broken. The study also illustrates, through the prism of genetics, the complex anthroponymy system of Iberian surnames in the American context, which gave a legitimate and significant role to maternal ancestry. As one of the very few instances of a Y-DNA genetic match between two men of different surnames at the edge of genealogical time frames, this study offers insights into the larger use of genetics for genealogy and anthroponymy. In particular, how the context influences ethical grounds decisions such as the predisposition to pay taxes is analyzed, using the survey carried out in 2005 by Latinobarometro. The objective is to analyze how country performance determines tax morale.
