The Story of Willis Sharpe Kilmer
Information Compiled by D. A. Sharpe Willis Sharpe Kilmer is my half second cousin, once removed. Our ancestor in common is John Elsefer Sharp, Willis' great grandfather and my great, great grandfather. Willis is descended through John and his first wife, Eve Markle. I am descended through John and his second wife, Elizabeth Bodine. Willis Sharpe Kilmer was born October 18, 1868 in Brooklyn, New York. His family moved to Binghamton, New York in 1878 where he lived the rest of his life, which ended in 1941. Willis Sharpe Kilmer was born on the first anniversary of the United States' acquisition of Alaska from Russia. He was born in the year that the Great Train Robbery took place near Marshfield, Indiana, as seven members of the Reno gang made off with $96,000 in cash, gold and bonds. 1 "Binghamton is a city in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. It is near the Pennsylvania border, in a bowl-shaped valley at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers. Binghamton is the county seat of Broome County and is the principal city and cultural center of the Greater Binghamton metropolitan area (also known as the Triple Cities), home to a quarter million people. The population of the city itself, according to the 2010 census, is 47,376. "The city was named after William Bingham, a wealthy Philadelphian who bought the surrounding land in 1792. Before that, the first known people of European descent to come to the area were the troops of the Sullivan Expedition in 1779, during the American Revolutionary War. -

Linville Family in America – First Generations
300th Anniversary of the Linvill/e Family in America, August 1982, Linvilla Orchards, Media, PA Linville Family in America – First Generations Alice Eichholz, Ph.D., CG 1 The Linville Family in America – First Generations The Linville family in America can trace its recent past to the southern coast parishes in East Sussex, England in the beginning of the 17th century, in spite of the fact that some branches of the family's oral history have claimed that they were French Huguenot.1 That claim seems more likely related to later generations when several of the male Linvilles married women who clearly trace their ancestry to that beleaguered group of emigrants. Though, given Linvill origins on the Newhaven seacoast with a ferry in operation to the French coast for centuries, there still might be some 16th century origin on the other side of the English Channel. This, coupled with the Linvill progenitor's occupation as "seaman" on the south coast of Sussex across the channel from Normandy or Belgium, still leaves unanswered the question as to where the Linvilles were before the early1600s. Genetic genealogy indicates only that the haplogroup for those who descend from these Linvills [R1b1a2a1a1a (U106)],2 is a predominant one from the United Kingdom. This doesn’t yet provide any earlier notions about the family’s origin. In Sussex, England, the name Lindfield means "open land of (or with) lime-trees."3 It is found in two surname dictionaries, both deriving it from the village of Lindfield in Sussex.4 One phonetic pronunciation of Lindfield is "linv l,"5 although in present-day Sussex it is generally pronounced "Linfield" without the "d." It is spelled numerous ways, sometimes even within the same document. -

FOREWORD. This manuscript was prepared for publication in 1925 and was deposited with the Super-Arundal Company, Publishers, pending figures on its pub lication, and while there a fire destroyed the print ing establishment; but fortunately this manuscript was only slightly scorched and was returned to me whole. TENTH LEGION TITHABLES PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX or " TITHE AND HORSE TAX " There are in the clerk's office of Rockingham County, Virginia, some of the old personal property tax books. I have called this the "Horse Tax" for the reason that the horses seem to have been the chief personal prop erty listed for taxation. The number of horses credited to a person in that day would pretty accurately indicate his farming activities. We might aptly refer to those early farmers as "three horse farmers" or "six horse farmers," depending upon the number of horses that the farmer possessed This horse tax had a tendency, no doubt, to limit the number of horses a man owned to actual necessity. A large number of horses and slaves in that day distinguished the owner as an expensive automobile and a uni formed chauffeur does in this day, only more so, especially if he had a fine four wheeled carriage. -
