A record low number of college freshmen show much \ interest in politics. Just 14 percent of the freshmen inter- viewed in the UCLA survey released last week say they frequently discuss politics. There are no burning issues. Nothing to get riled about. No way to make a difference. We have been fed these sound bytes too long. Have our schools forgotten to teach us that politics is not a precon- dition for an action movie or a John Grisham novel, but a space in which the fate of the world is decided? Kind of like taking our medicine, regardless of the reasons behind the doctor's prescription. Hence the highest percentage of middle-of-the-road students ever. Nobody wants to make decisions. Nobody commits to a political stance. Yet the decisions to be made are infinite. The balanced budget, for example, may be boring, and is presented as such.
