3 YOUR TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT What is a Township and who governs? The Pilgrims brought the Township form of government to America in 1620. This form of government spread across New England to the Rocky Mountains. Townships are found in 22 states. In Ohio, Townships predate state government. With land grants by Ohio, some sections were set aside for support of schools and religious institutions. Currently 35% of Ohio residents live in townships.

In 1804, Townships were established as the basic form of local government. Township are constitutional in nature and cannot legislate or pass laws. Townships are governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd numbered years to a four year term beginning on the following January 1st. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected Fiscal Officer, who serves a four year term beginning on April 1st of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election.

J.C. Reuthinger Memorial Preserve - 30730 Oregon Road

“The Reuthinger Preserve was donated in 2005 by the late Lucille Reuthinger Knepper. The 69-acre preserve is home to the Wood County Park District’s native plant nursery, greenhouse, and Stewardship Department. The Native Plant Program encompasses every aspect of growing native plants from collecting seed to planting plants in our parks and preserves. In 2008 the Friends of the Wood County Park District donated a greenhouse to the preserve enabling the Park District to propagate native plants species on site for the first time. As of 2012, the native plant nursery has 84 different species of native plants in production. The greenhouse season runs January through May and we grow anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 plants each season.

The Stewardship Department oversees the land management of the natural areas of all the parks belonging to the Wood County Park District. The department runs various volunteer programs throughout the year that are open to the public.

In the future, a wetland mitigation project is planned for the section of property along Tracy Road. The Nursery that is located on the Oregon Road side of the property looks to expand to growing native trees and shrubs as well as continuing the expansion of its herbaceous plant production.” (Stewardship Coordinator - Wood County Park District)
