How To Attain Liberation From a False World? The Gnostic Myth of Sophia in Dark City (1998) Abstract In the second half of the 20th century, a fascinating revival of ancient Gnostic ideas in American popular culture could be observed. One of the major streams through which Gnostic ideas are transmitted is Hollywood cinema. Many works that emerged at the end of 1990s can be viewed through the ideas of ancient Gnostic systems: The Truman Show (1998), The Thirteenth Floor (1999), The Others (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001) or The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003). In this article, the author analyses Dark City (1998) and demonstrates that the story depicted in the film is heavily indebted to the Gnostic myth of Sophia. -

That's very surprising.” Overview: (1) Introduction (2) Five-stage evolution of fundamentalism in the United States (3) Features common to all fundamentalisms (4) What one does about fundamentalism INTRODUCTION: In 1980 the greatly respected American historian, George Marsden published Fundamentalism and American Culture, a history of the first decades of American fundamentalism. The book quickly rose to prominence, provoking new studies of American fundamentalism and contributing to a renewal of interest in American religious history. The book’s timing was fortunate, for it was published as a resurgent fundamentalism was becoming active in politics and society. The term “fundamentalism” was first applied in the 1920’s to Protestant movements in the United States that interpreted the Bible in an extreme and literal sense. In the United States, the term “fundamentalism” was first extended to other religious traditions around the time of the Iranian Revolution in 1978-79. In general all fundamentalist movements arise when traditional societies are forced to face a kind of social disintegration of their way of life, a loss of personal and group meaning and the introduction of new customs that lead to a loss of personal and group orientation. -

Theory in the Study of Religion
Chapter 3 Theory in the Study of Religion Donald Wiebe My aim in this paper is to assess the role of theory in ‘religious studies.’1 The task is a general one and will not concern itself with evaluating any specific theory or theories of religion but rather with the appropriateness of the very notion of ‘a theory of religion.’ It will not, however, be an easy undertaking, not only because of its generality but also because of its paradoxical character. To admit of the existence of theories of religion and yet raise the question of the ‘possibility’ of such theories is somewhat odd to say the least. The history of the study of religion, I suggest however, forces us both to the admission and to the question. 1 The Place of ‘Theory’ in Religious Studies The place of theory in ‘religious studies’ has had a rather chequered history. Theory, it seems, lies at the centre of the formation of this so-called ‘new sci- ence’ in the form of what Eric Sharpe in his history of the ‘discipline’ refers to as the ‘Darwinian-Spencerian theory of evolution.’ In concluding a survey of the antecedents of ‘comparative religion’ (i.e. the ‘new science of religion’ of Max Müller) he writes: … with Comte, Darwin and Spencer we have come to the threshold of the hundred years of comparative religion which we are to survey. We have seen something of the variety of approaches to the religions of mankind which could be held before the coming of evolutionism: the Christian 1 My attention in this paper will be focused primarily on the emergence of the study of religion as an academic discipline (i.e., a ‘university subject’) with the rise of the ‘phenomenologists.’ The ‘phenomenologists,’ I would argue, constitute a dominant tradition in the history of the scholarly study of religion. -

72 Gobitis and Barnett: The Flag Salute and the Changing Interpretation of the Constitution Rhenee Clark Swink In Minersville School District vs Gobitis (1940) the United States Supreme Court ruled 8 to1 overturning lower court decisions barring states from implementing compulsory flag salutes. Three years later, the Supreme Court overturned that ruling with a 6 to 3 decision in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943). The cases were nearly identical and argued similarly but had different outcomes. How did the landscape of America change so drastically in a three-year period? First, the Supreme Court did not see a danger in the rise of nationalism in the United States or the social impact the ruling would bring. Second, the violence that followed Gobitis decision caused Jehovah’s Witnesses, a pacifist group that was uninvolved in politics, to become more persistent in utilizing the legal system and more vocal concerning persecution of its members. Finally, the Supreme Court was not the same. A change in justices and a shift in the focus of the Court from economic matters to personal liberties created a different political landscape, when West Virginia State Board of Education vs. Barnett reached the Court in 1943. Jehovah’s Witnesses sought to spread their message and seek new members through distribution of the organizations magazines and books, playing recorded phonograph messages from organization leaders, and through public lectures. The group was frequently arrested for selling books without a license. Other areas developed specific ordinances to target Jehovah’s Witnesses. One community in Georgia passed an ordinance that prohibited anyone calling on houses to offer any printed material.47 Jehovah Witnesses trace their origins to a group founded in the late nineteenth century in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. -

These cases almost always call for the delicate balancing of the rights of the individual, allegedly pro tected by a specific clause in the Constitution, and the duties that state or federal authority can exact from citizens in order that society may maintain a minimum standard of peace and security. Jackson Center exists to preserve and advance the legacy of Justice Jackson through education, events, and exhibitry. Today’s special gathering, featuring the Barnett sisters and the attorney who served during 1943 as the senior law clerk to the Chief Justice of the United States, Harlan Fiske Stone, furthers that mission. During World War II, Gathie and Marie Barnett, along with their parents and other Jehovah’s Witnesses, challenged the constitutionality of compelling school children to pledge allegiance and salute the American flag. Statement on Diversity: As a Subfield of Religious Studies, the Study of Comparative Mysticism Has Been Dominated by Male White Western Scholars Since Its Inception

Course Description: In the spirit of dialogue and inquiry, this advanced seminar provides an in-depth exploration of the field of comparative mysticism. After discussing the various meanings of the term “mysticism,” an overview of the field of comparative mysticism and its methodological foundations will be offered. We will discuss the major horizons of the field, as well as the main families of interpretive models in the field: typological, perennialist, constructivist, feminist, neo-perennialist, evolutionary, contextualist, postmodern, pluralist, and participatory. Topical sessions will address five contemporary areas of inquiry in the study of mysticism: (1) the intermonastic dialogue, (2) mysticism and gender, (3) embodiment and erotic mysticism, (4) the ethics of mysticism, and (5) psychedelic research and mystical experience. Students select two mystical traditions, authors, notions or phenomena and compare them applying one of the models studied or their own comparative approach. Students are encouraged to approach the study of mystics and mystical texts from an empathic, participatory, and contemplative perspective. Summary of Educational Purpose: The main purpose of this course is to deepen students’ knowledge of classic and contemporary approaches to the study of mystical phenomena and comparative mysticism. An additional objective is to guide students in the selection of the most appropriate comparative approach for their research interests.
