Before UMD parted ways with the WCHA following the 2012-13 season, Sandelin directed his troops to berths in seven of 11 Final Five playoff events. He has also helped produce a pair of Hobey Baker Memorial Award winners (Jack Connolly in 2011-12 and Junior Lessard in 2003-04), six NCAA All-Americans and 19 different All-NCHC/WCHA selections.
