  • Faculty Seminar to Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan
Report: Faculty Seminar to Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan Margaret Denton Department of Art and Art History August 5, 2009 My written notes are punctuated with small drawings. For the most part they are of buildings, details of interiors, statues, and works of art. A few are of people we met, but the mobility of humans made them difficult subjects. The drawings are really sketches made quickly, often while standing. What purpose did doing them serve? First of all, the process of sketching helped me to be attentive to my surroundings. Secondly, it enabled me to be actively engaged with new stimuli. In this report these sketches serve as clusters around which my impressions and thoughts are gathered. Portrait of Peter the Great by Mihail Chemiakin, bronze, 1991, St. Petersburg. The large statue of a seated Peter is located within the walls of the Peter and Paul fortress, the physical birth- place of the city. There is something oddly grotesque about the statue. The small head fits uncomfortably on the oversized, angular body. Perhaps the artist’s view of his country’s history was shaped by his non-conformist attitudes, which led to his exile from the Soviet Union in 1971. How the Russians negotiate their past is what impressed me the most during this part of our trip. This manifests itself in physical ways, for example, the luxury cars that are parked in front of restaurants and bars, and in symbolic ways, as in the inclusion of the Romanov family in the Peter and Paul Cathedral. More intangible than these examples is the way in which Russians declare the Soviet era a thing of the past and yet retain certain aspects of its system, most notably corruption.

  • Mihail Chemiakin
Mihail Chemiakin Mihail Chemiakin was born in Moscow in 1943, grew up in occupied East Germany, where his father was a governor of several towns. He returned to Russia in 1957 where he was admitted to the Special High School of the Repin Academy of Art in Leningrad. He was expelled from art school for failing to conform to Socialist Realist norms, and from 1959- 1971 worked as a labourer in various capacities. He was subjected to compulsory treatment at a mental institution, which was a standard way of dealing with ideological dissidents at that time. For five years he worked on the maintenance crew of the Hermitage Museum. In 1967, the artist founded the St. Petersburg Group and developed the philosophy of Metaphysical Synthesism, dedicated to the creation of a new form of icon painting based on the study of religious art of all ages and peoples. He had six exhibitions in USSR; all of them were arrested and lasted only 2 days. In 1971 Chemiakin was forced out of the USSR by the Soviet authorities. He settled first in France, then moved to New York City in 1981. While in Paris he edited and published Apollon-77, an almanach of post-Stalinist art, poetry and photography in which many of the “non-conformists” were first published. Chemiakin also recorded and published the first disks of gypsy singers Vladimir Poliakoff and Aliocha Dmitrievich, both of whom lived in Paris. He worked for several years with Russian bard Vladimir Vysotsky, systematically recording his songs for what became a seven-record set of Vysotsky's music.

Shapiro Auctions RUSSIAN AND INTERNATIONAL ART AND ANTIQUES Saturday - May 18, 2013 RUSSIAN AND INTERNATIONAL ART AND ANTIQUES 1: RUSSIAN ICON OF SPAS OPLECHNII 18TH CENTURY USD 1,800 - 2,200 A RUSSIAN ICON OF SPAS OPLECHNII, 18th C., Egg tempera and gesso on wood panel with a kovcheg. Two insert splints on the back. 31.5 x 26.2 cm. (12 3/8 x 10 1/4 in.) PROVENANCE: Purchased by the Mother of the current owner in Russia during the 1920s; thence by descent in Family Collection. LOT NOTES: During the late 1920s, shortly after the Russian Revolution, two young New York society women, sisters Adelaide and Helen Hooker secretly traveled to Russia “out of curiosity and cussedness.” Unbeknownst to their father, the president of the American Defense Society, they spent over six months in snowy Russia, pursuing adventure in Moscow, Leningrad, Vladimir, Novgorod, and Suzdal among other cities. Searching for a glimpse of “Old Russia,” the women sought-out ancient churches and monasteries, just as they were being taken over by the government and converted to Anti-Religious museums. This icon was among those that Adelaide and Helen Hooker purchased from these establishments and brought to the United States, in effect saving them from becoming victims of iconoclasm. In the States, the icons were kept in esteemed family collections. One of the sisters would go on to marry the IRA officer Ernie O'Malley, the other the writer John P. Marquand. Their youngest sister, Blanchette, went on to marry John D. Rockefeller III, and would become a major benefactor of the Museum of Modern Art, where she served as president from 1972 to 1985.
