 The House will reconvene for its 2nd Legislative Day on Tuesday, January 12 at 1:00 p.m.  No bills / resolutions are expected to be debated on the floor.

Today on the Floor

The House of Representatives convened for the 2021 Session at 10:00 this morning. Representative (69th) gave the scripture reading and prayer as Chaplain of the Day. Timothy Miller of Augusta sang “The Star- Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America”. The representative-elects were sworn in to office for the 2021-2022 term.

Speaker (7th) was re-elected as speaker of the House of Representatives. Speaker Ralston has served as speaker since 2010 and is Georgia’s 73rd speaker of the House. Speaker Ralston welcomed the new members of the body and discussed the challenges the has faced in the past, and how its members can keep Georgia moving through the pandemic and divisive climate of the past months to navigate a path to a brighter future for our state with leadership that is honest, fair, compassionate, and courageous.

Representative Jan Jones (47th) was re-elected speaker pro tempore, William Reilly was re-elected clerk of the House of Representatives, Pat Hinote was elected doorkeeper of the House of Representatives, and Betsy Theroux was re-elected House messenger for the 2021-2022 term.

Traditional legislative action included the adoption of Senate Resolution 2 to notify the governor that the General Assembly has convened, and House Resolution 6 to notify the Senate that the Georgia House of Representatives has convened. HR 7 was approved to adopt the Rules of the House of Representatives, which also establishes a Creative Arts and Entertainment standing committee. HR 8 was adopted to empower the Speaker’s Office to administer certain extraordinary administrative and operating functions relative to officials, employees, and committees during the pandemic. HR 9 was adopted for a joint legislative session of the General Assembly on Thursday, January 14th at 11:00 a.m. for the State of the State.

The first adjournment resolution, HR 10, was adopted and sets the calendar through Legislative Day 5.

Majority Leader Jon Burns reviewed the COVID-19 surveillance testing and protocols being implemented by the General Assembly. All members and staff are to be tested twice weekly through the duration of the session.
